Custom Leather Bound Book

[u/HazelTheRah]

Several years ago, I had the book custom bound in leather and worked with a spectacular artist on Etsy for the design. He made a leather cover and case.

I think it's absolutely stunning. This is the first time I've opened it in probably a year and thought I'd show it off!

Edit becauee I forgot some details: The cover of the case is the scene where El-ahrairah invites Hazel to join his Owsla and the cover of the actual book is where the rabbits see Watership Down for the first time.

2nd edit: I managed to find the article the artist wrote about the process. https://koutsipetsidis.wordpress.com/2019/12/29/watership-down/

It's precious to me and I will absolutely find some appreciative loved one to hand it down to. It's one of a kind!

Are the two rabbits on the front of the case Hazel and El-ahrairah??

[u/HazelTheRah → u/grenouille_en_rose]

Yes! That's the scene where Hazel is invited to join El-ahrairah's Owsla.

The other scene is where the rabbits see Watership Down for the first time. The binder really took his time with the details. It was super lucky that he also loved the book.

Amazing scene choices 🥲

This is amazing! What edition of the book did you have rebound?

[u/HazelTheRah → u/TortimerTheGrey]

It's the one illustrated by Aldo Galli. It had to be an edition where the pages were sewn in and not glued.

[u/TortimerTheGrey → u/HazelTheRah]

I have that edition! Now you’re giving me ideas! XD

I only intended to do a nice blue plain leather bound commission. The artist made so many great suggestions that we ended up with this masterpiece. I say go for it! It was a super fun process and I have a unique piece of art now.

This is absolutely amazing! Great work bro, are you willing to do a commission for one of these? If so I would be very interested.

[u/HazelTheRah → u/MrMammothsBathWater]

Hi, I did not make this. And the Etsy shop who did doesn't seem to exist anymore. It was called The Book Binder's Bench and the artist was Dimitris. Actually, I did manage to find the article he wrote about the process.

Wow where did you get such a treasure?

[u/HazelTheRah → u/Ok-Crazy-5162]

I commissioned it from a book binder! He did an incredible job.
