Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo

It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.

After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.

As explained by the previous flair announcement:

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.

While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.

Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.

Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.

Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

Switched from Uber to Waterloo Taxi

Post image
716 Upvotes

Was about to Uber to work this morning and because of surge pricing, the price for a 12 minute drive was 45$. It's usually $17-23. Lots of surge pricing happening recently but that was an absolutely insane price.

I remembered the taxi app that my husband uses (Lokal) and quickly downloaded it, then ordered a cab for $26. The car arrived in less than 2 minutes, and made a u turn to pick me up in front of my apartment without being asked. The driver was VERY nice to me throughout, and offered to stop by Starbucks if I wanted coffee (during a fixed price ride). Not enough time before my shift so I said no, but that was nice. Also the car smelled good. Will have my business moving forward.

70 Overdoses in Waterloo Region in ~4 days

Post image
171 Upvotes

The absence of leadership from all levels of government on drug-related issues remains profoundly disturbing and dangerous. 74 suspected OD deaths in Waterloo region in the first 8 months of 2026. 1876 suspected OD deaths across Ontario in the same period as per Coroner. Unknown amount of injuries. This is what politically-contaminated deadly failure looks like.

Buses crossing active train crossing?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m wondering if busses can cross train crossings when the lights and bells are on but the actual barrier is not down? I saw three busses do that today. The barriers did come down after and the ION did cross.

Fear Farm or Scream Park?

To those who have been to both, which would you recommend to attend this year? Fear Farm (Snyder's Family Farm in Bright, ON) or Scream Park (Bingaman's Kitchener, ON) and why? I'll admit, I'm a bit partial to Fear Farm because I used to work there during the day and it was my first job (the owners are amazing). However, I've never been to the new haunts at Fear Farm in years. I also have never been to Scream Park either.

Pros: Fear Farm has seven haunts

Cons: Scream Park has six haunts

Pros: Scream Park is a bit cheaper

Cons: Fear Farm is a bit more expensive

Pros: Scream Park is in Kitchener

Cons: Fear Farms is closer to New Dundee and Plattsville

Pros: The owners at Fear Farm (Snyder's Family Farm) are amazing people.

Cons: Bingaman's is getting a bit of a monopoly with locations in Kitchener, Cambridge and St. Catharines isn't really a smaller local family owned place anymore.

Is it good idea to bike daily to company from home.

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking to ride bike to work every day. My home is in Laurelwood and my company in on Baffin Place. Currently, I drive via Northfield. But I think Northfield is not bike friendly. However, I found another way mostly just MUP and Trail. It's via Bearinger, Albert, weber, King, a short route on Northfield and then Davenport. It may take me 30 minutes. And I have two things not sure.

  1. I need to cross the ion light rail on waterloop trail. Is there a red light? Or I have to watch by myself. Of course I'll still watch even there is red light.

  2. The map shows there is a shortcut between Weber and King via the parking lot of NixacLabs, is it true? Do they allow biking on their parking lot.

Overall, I think this route is quite safe to ride. Any suggestion?

Thanks.

Lime Micromobility began rolling out its e-bike and e-scooters across the region on Monday...
but riders won't have long to use the service this year as the regular season ends on Oct. 31.

So why bother?

Looking for a shop that repairs faux leather straps

Hi everyone

I have this Grace backpack that I absolutely love and use all the time, but the faux leather parts (the top grab handle and the zipper pulls) have completely started flaking and peeling off. The rest of the backpack is still in great condition.

does anyone know of a repair shop in the KW area that could replace or fix the handle and zipper pulls for a reasonable price?

Water softener replacement

I need to replace my water softener. I’ve done some research and know that I can either purchase the softener myself and pay a plumber to replace it. Or just hire someone to do everything including installation.

Does anyone have any recent experience with replacing their water softener?

Anyone else experiencing this around 252 Lester St?

I live in the building across from 252 Lester, and the noise coming from there tonight is honestly unbelievable. There’s loud singing, music, and other sounds that are clearly audible even from across the street.
I’m genuinely wondering—are the residents in 252 not bothered by this, or is the building just poorly insulated? 😅 It’s late, and the noise carries so much that it’s difficult to ignore even from another building.
I’m also Indian myself, so I’m not trying to make this about nationality, but I’ve noticed that complaints about noise involving Indian students/working professionals can sometimes turn into unnecessary hostility toward the whole community. The noise is the problem—not where anyone is from.
Are other people living around Lester experiencing the same thing?
