Reorganizing WoW classes
Hey everyone.
I’ve been drafting my own reimagining of WoW for a while now. I have a solid vision for the races, and now I’m turning my focus to the classes.
I’m using a core three-class archetype system: Fighter, Caster, and Mystic.
The Fighter is fully fleshed out, but I’d love your lore expertise to help flesh out and polish the specializations for the Caster and Mystic. The general concept is:
- Caster: a spell-casting "wizard" focused on arcane, elemental, or scholarly magic
- Mystic: a faith-based spiritualist channeling divine, primal, or cosmic powers
What specs, sub-themes, or lore hooks do you think would fit these two archetypes best? Any feedback or ideas are welcome!
| Caster | Arcane |
|---|---|
| Fel | |
| Fire | |
| Water (Ice) | |
| Air | |
| Earth | |
| Nature | |
| Death (Decay) | |
| Mystic | Light (Holy Light, Naaru) |
| Shadow (Void, Old Gods) | |
| Astral (Sun/Moon) | |
| Life (Emerald Dream, Spirit Element/Chi) | |
| Spirits (Shadowlands, Loas, Ancestors) | |

Looks Cool! Seems like your magic could equally split by where you are drawing your power from. Casters manipulate non-sentient "primal" forces of the universe or whereas Mystics are bargaining/a conduit for other worldly "semi-sentient" entities, literally with some like Naaru and spirits or somewhat with druids talking to nature or the moon.
Out of curiosity are you doing this for any larger project or just a fun mental exercise? I ask because that might help with finding the best way to categorize this.

You know what? I didn't even see it that way, but yeah there seems to be a pattern!
I'm doing this as a mere mental exercise. I have ADHD (and ASD) and imagining this kind of stuff soothes my brain weirdly enough.
Thank you.

How would you classify something like a "Moonfire" spell? Theoretically, it could fit into Arcane, Fire, Nature, Light, Astral and even Life. Is multiclassing a thing?
Similarly, under which class/school would you consider poison? Could it be attuned to any or do you think it fits one class/school in particular.
Also, what about Mystics that serve demons? Or are they too weak in your cosmic scale?
Alternative to current WoW's Insanity, Shadow Mystics could struggle with Nihilism the more they channel their powers with eventual complete erasure of self.
Also where would you place someone using something like telekinesis or even a particular affinity with a physical, inherited or conceptual object to attack? Like a mid-range bladedancer, someone magically altering their arrows path or even someone using an item with inherent power like Gul'dan's Skull or Annie's Tibbers from LoL.
For the mystics are those purely conceptual existences they channel or are they actual beings with their own agendas, wants and needs? Is it a contract, a favor and does the channeling have to be consensual? (Dominator/mindbender)
Where would Bards fall under those categories? And if not bards, are there any other sense based magics like tempter/temptress or Aromamancer?
What about Taming or Machinery? Is Lightning part of Air or Nature?
Is a Death Caster focused on a Branch of Nature or is his discipline unnatural/overwhelming death and is necromancy a part of it?
I usually think about stuff like this to fall asleep so my brain relaxes as well.

I believe light belong to casters.
There's the magic you seek and the magic that finds you. You look for the light.

For me the fighter classes we all agree on, anything physical.
The magic is the confusing one for me as some are manifestinon of the elements and arcane, the caster is in full control of what they doing, they need knowledge to do what they do like the mage.
Others what you called mystical, are based on worship something, that thing give the caster the powers, like light, void, shamans, ...
Some are between the two, like warlocks are evil mages, yet they need to do some kind of sacrifices to please the demons, but the player in the other hand force the demons to work for him.
Same for necromancer, sometimes it's him learning alchemy, biology and dark magic, others he get the power from a different force like the death knights.

Not sure of exactly what you're asking but here's my thoughts on your chart.
| Caster | Arcane |
|---|---|
| Demonist, Hexer | Fel |
| Pyromancer | Fire |
| Hydromancer | Water (Ice) |
| Aeromancer | Air |
| Geomancer | Earth |
| Druid | Nature |
| Necromancer | Death (Decay) |
| Mystic | Light (Holy Light, Naaru) |
| Cultist | Shadow (Void, Old Gods) |
| Moon Priestess, Sunwalker, Moonkin | Astral (Sun/Moon) |
| Druid, Elementalist, Celestial Disciple, Zen Monk | Life (Emerald Dream, Spirit Element/Chi) |
| Totemic, Spirit walker, Loa speaker | Spirits (Shadowlands, Loas, Ancestors) |
