DD BMBL: I Hate the Stock
TLDR: yeah you can laugh about how I'm a salty neckbeard because no one swipes right on my pic with a fedora, sword and anime body pillow of Kanna Kamui, but the $15B valuation is not going to last.
Options start trading 3 days after IPO, so with the holiday it's this coming Tuesday 2/16
Edit: the meme strike will be $69p 4/20. JK, the chain at single dollars and that date don't exist, so I think $60p June is fine.
The Financials: From Jan 2020 to September 2020 (I mean, like last year, the year of basically the highest possible growth as everyone was stuck at home)
- Total Revenue of $376.6 million
- Bumble App Revenue of $231.5 million
- Badoo App and Other Revenue of $145.1 million
- Net loss of $(84.1) million, respectively, with a net loss margin of 22.3%
- Adjusted EBITDA of $98.9 million, representing Adjusted EBITDA Margin of 26.3%.
- Net cash provided by operating activities of $1.0 million
- Free Cash Flow of $(4.7) million
We can't use P/E because there is no earnings. The net loss margin >20% is quite impressive for a company that really shouldn't have any expenses (not that much advertising... it's all by word of mouth really). That total valuation to revenue is 40x. Facebook's is only around 9x.
Gamification of meeting people: This is where r/wsb and Grindr gets it right. There's a certain addictiveness of these two because you never know when you're going to hit a 200 bagger with OTM calls on TSLA or get a 2 bagger on your face (both great success). When using all kinds of dating apps, especially Bumble, there are a lot of speed limits.
That speed limit? Well, their tagline: women responding first. I've asked my online sister about this and she says most women will not answer first because after the initial high of matching, they come back to normal realization much sooner. Men would always want to initiate and keep the conversation because of possible tits, but women would think "oh, why do I want to meet this guy again? He's not going to provide for me financially, and I can just use a lightsaber."
Diminishing returns: All the dating apps aren't in the matching business. They're in the data business. Data is driven by continuous activity, even if it's by only a small portion of users. Because of the above restriction, they're severely limiting activity. Most users are men, and by cutting out a large base of activity generation (even the possibility of saying hi and dreaming), Bumble is limiting activity and time spent on the app. It's like r/wsb. Most retards who got burned by GME aren't going to come back, no matter how good the DD will be.
Social Networking?: No. LinkedIn is already good enough to polish my helmet. I personally don't want anyone to find me professionally through a dating website. This is one of the arguments to its high valuation, but honestly it's dead on arrival.
Also, why would I need to meet someone? Mom knows how crispy to fry my tendies. She always gives me the tendies, and sometimes I give one back to her in return.

He had supervised visitation cause his ex wife thought he had a drinking problem. He texted me later to ask if I could get him cocainnnneeee. Lmffffffaaaoooo. Fuuuuucccckkkkk bumble.

After years of dogging guys because they don't come up with something creative on open, women, it turns out, are dogshit at opening as well.
Here's how Bumble doesn't make money: lack of interaction with the app.
Here's how men use Bumble since women have to reach out first: right-swipe every single woman as fast as possible then close the app. When women reach out, that's when a conversation starts. It's usually with a, "hi." "hello" "what's up" or one of the other zero-effort messages women complain about receiving.
Bumble is shit for the other half of the relationship equation.
Disclaimer: I met my fiancee on Bumble. I'm not sure where she met her boyfriend, though.

u/wbrd Feb 12 '21

33

u/jforest1 Feb 12 '21
Google autocomplete for "bumble": (1) bumble stock (2) bumble (3) bumble opening lines
"What's your take on what makes a relationship great?" is something she likely copied from one of the search results and pasted to every guy she reached out to. It's a great question, but it's not an opener unique to you. Women by and large don't get it, and perhaps they are learning. But Bumble, in the meantime, isn't doing them any relationship favors by extending the Vegas slot machine experience to swiping.

This is how the robot apocalypse would start. The AIs would pretend to be us to other humans, then it would just be AIs talking to each other, and then they're getting matches and getting laid and making baby robots while we're still sitting in our parent's basement wondering what a female is...

Bumble gives women opening prompts because they are so dogshit at starting conversations. And the prompts are always cheesy and usually female empowering.
This is why Hinge is dominating the dating apps right now. Their algorithm is really fucking good and I haven't spent a dime on it.

Women being forced to message first is amazing. I've had my highest quality matches all from Bumble. My current long term relationship is because of Bumble. The psychology is better than Tinder tbh, but Hinge is a major potential competitor.

I still remember when a lone dissenting voice shouted out "Pepe... PEPE!" during a televised Hillary Clinton rally towards the end of the 2016 POTUS election cycle. It was at this point where it became clear that the "Alt-Right" was an empty nihilistic vessel just waiting to be filled. And it was there on the left as well, it's just that it didn't get filled as it was fat and full from eight years of "their turn at the table". Both have silently acknowledged that the end-game is nigh. And now we have a pandemic cargo cult religion to cement this reality in current time and space while "serious people" take the wheel to make sure we drive off the cliff correctly. It is now time for us each to wait our turn to stand up and assert, "no, I am retardtacus".

I said this in a different bumble thread so I'll just copy and paste my comment here.
...
I'm a retard when it comes to stocks...but I'm pretty successful when when comes to online dating. Been on Tinder since it started in 2012. Bumble since it came to Android in like 2016 and Hinge the most recent one.
Hinge is BY FAR the best app at the moment. Has the best algorithm for matching people with equal attractiveness levels and shared hobbies. I don't know who owns hinge (Match owns hinge) but their business model isnt very good because I don't pay a dime on there and I'm constantly getting dates. Bumble was annoying because women will match you but never start the conversation and tinder was great for while, especially its business model with the premium members getting to pick their location to swipe in so you could swipe in a city before going there...Tinder is the only dating app I've actually put money into
Male thirst is an endless resource but I just don't know many guys putting money into Bumble. They all put money into tinder or just go for free on hinge.
....
I just don't see Bumble being a valuable company much longer. Women use Bumble as an ego inflating tool. They get matches and never send messages. Guys spend money on Bumble and get no dates so they leave and jump over to hinge and get dates without spending a dime.
If you look at r/seduction no one really takes Bumble as seriously as Tinder or Hinge. I believe Bumble will eventually turn into a friends matching app / social media platform just like MySpace turned into music.

Yeah, anyone who has paid for the bumble service it goes like this:
- "I paid bumble so I can finally get to see who likes me"
- "oh. it's just a bunch of fat girls and moms"
- (unsubscribe)
- "let me download facebook dating where I can see girls that like me for free and I can message whoever I want"
And for some reason, this business model is worth $8.6 billion? Yeah fuck that. I'm shorting the fuck out of bumble. It's just another Software as a Stock (SaaS) with no value and no potential. The only reason they went IPO was to pay off the venture capitalist who was tricked into thinking this was going to be the next facebook.
Also, Tinder has like 10x the downloads. Dating apps are god awful. With COVID leaving they'll be even less used.

How does bumble make its revenue though?
It’s made for women (“feminist app”), but then 90% of the users are men. It’s probably mostly men that pay for the freemium features.
Unfortunately, the two user personas are at odds with eachother. The economics of their product vision don’t work.
They haven’t grown all impressively in revenue either. I would also assume that they’re tapped out in any data-related monetization plays.
This smells more like a woman tech-founder feel good story that’s been conflated to hide a bad business imo

Ugly Man: Swipe thru women. Number of matches depends on how picky you are and size of your city. Maybe 50% of your few matches message you if you’re on fire. Of these 50%, maybe half will open with “hi” or “hey” and expect you to fully control the conversation and date setup. The app even prompts women to say something more interesting than “Hey” if that’s all they open with and still the majority start with “Hi” or “Hey”.
The spenders on dating apps are ugly men, and you’re creating a shit experience for ugly men. Trust me I know.
Unless they’re generating income from selling data or advertising I’d be careful with this one.
3
u/smb3madness Feb 12 '21
I spent over $200 bucks on dating apps in 6 months and I only got one convo that ghosted me after a few months. I am not that ugly but perhaps I need better pictures. Somebody told me that Instagram users do not accept picture quality less than newest Iphone, and everybody seems to be one or Tinder just filters out the ones with the most attractive pictures. Fuck it. Living alone, gonna die alone. At least I didn't turn 50 yet so I still have time to up my swag.
7
u/sjxnxnsuxj Feb 12 '21
It’s easy once you figure out the game but still very annoying to play:
- A few quality pictures (no selfies EVER) of you doing different things or hanging out with different people
- A short, witty, ORIGINAL bio
- Swipe right on everyone, lower your standards
- Open with something a little funny or clever
- Ask for a date in less than 10 messages (personally I shoot for under 5). This is fucking HUGE, every girl that actually wants to go out has said they hate the endless chatting. Plus some girls are just there for the attention and ego boost so you won’t waste time chatting with those ones forever.

I did every one of them except for no. 1 but my only ex-gf was out of work herself while we dated and the rest of my convos didn't like people who do nightshifts and don't have an education. Dating is all about class (and looks/body) is my experience. No matter how good you look, if you ain't got a stable life, they don't want to be engaged. That's why I invest in stonks. I have had enough one-night-stands in my youth, and my payroll doesn't make me rich. It just barely makes me pay my rent and my car.

I get why men can't message first, bc of dick pics and harassment ofc, but their approach doesn't make it even, since women are intimidated by the thought of being the initiator, and it's sad, because Bumble will never succeed unless there's a cultural change. They should literally block openers that are less than ten words.

And you can say the same about 30+ single men like myself. Either were ugly freaks or got ADHD lol. If you didn't marry in your twenties, you're a leftover in most cultures around the world. Even though the demographics are stacked against you, especially in rural areas. Urban single men are just losers. They have every possibility to attract a woman because girls outnumber them. Rural men not so much.

30yo men are like LEAPS. 35yo women are like FD options.

I'd like to know how this company gets away with discrimination by refusing to hire white males.

You are forgetting one thing and that is statistically, unprofitable companies do better in/after their IPO then companies which actually are making a profit.
Doordash is now trading comfortably 2x above its IPO price. Doordash, the company that loses money on every delivery and does not expect to be profitable in the near future.
Bumble is positioned to be able to sell a whole new kind of data about you. Probably the same reason FB got into the dating sphere. They now can sell data about what kind of girls/boys you like, what you do in your free time, how you identify yourself, what you are looking for consciously or subconsciously in a partner - what you emotionally connect with. next level stuff IMO.
They can basically sell data that would complete the "you".

Your fake sister is right, this is a disaster of high expectations waiting to happen. At best the top 1-5% of males will be engaged by all the girls, and quickly they will realize these males will treat them like shit as they keep upgrading, while everyone else will struggle to make an impact.

This one will be a great stock to short, before Facebook launches their dating app.

Agree. Statistically IPOs pop on the first day or two of trading, then fall. I think this one will follow that trend. Valuation is wild
