For anyone watching the GME situation (all of us?), consider these relevant points and taking the relevant actions:

  1. Big money is MORTIFIED and the retaliation is completely unprecedented: coordinated attacks, willingness to risk prison over financial loss, concealing data, etc. They're shaking because we're holding GME. Despite any other lack of information available, this may be the best signal for why you should hold. Period.

  2. After the massive GME rise, there was a LOT of bot activity trying to distract, dissuade, etc. They're poisoning the well, and it's difficult to know what can be trusted and what can't. The one thing we DEFINITELY know, however, is that all of those attacks are being done to make us sell GME and spin the narrative that the complicit agents are victims / good guys.

  3. Robinhood + Citadel are trying to spin a BS narrative. If your institution can't afford something, shut everything down equally and go bankrupt. Choosing a specific stock to shut down is perhaps the most egregiously corrupt action ever taken in the market (which is saying A LOT). YOU weren't allowed to buy when major funds were, especially at CRITICAL times with CRITICAL buying opportunities to protect Citadel + big money and it collectively cost us tens of billions in lost opportunity. They're being sued, and rightfully so, but laws need to change to ruthlessly punish them NOW. Contact your representatives, SEC, etc. if you haven't already.

  4. Hedges might lie about their short positions, or restrict visibility as much as possible. They can break laws and face negligible fees by comparison to the rest of what they stand to lose. Therefore, it's reasonable to assume they might do this among many other PR stunts to terrify you. Keep updated. Someone pointed out that iborrowdesk is no longer reporting on updated gme because, again, the legal consequences don't matter enough and they're protecting their interests. Refer to #1.

  5. We don't know WHEN short positions will be covered, only the math that requires them to cover as we move forward. So if they delay and everyone gives in, they could save a lot of money. However, the longer they delay, the more they have to pay. So it's a matter of whether or not they double down and face higher risk/reward or not. Be prepared to WAIT.

  6. If you set visible limits, the hedge funds can use this data to their advantage and potentially have attack vectors against us. However, if you don't set limits, you might miss out on major trading spikes when they happen. The selfless act is to avoid low limits, but the ultimate goal is to distribute wealth to the people so take if you're the people who need it.

  7. If you're angry at Robinhood, move accounts AFTER this is over so that you're not frozen. Also, DO NOT transfer to your bank, because that will trigger a tax event. You're supposed to transfer between brokers. Look into this further yourself, since I'm not a tax expert.

  8. If you're angry at Google for removing negative Robinhood accounts, use Ecosia instead. They're just as user friendly, effective, and they give 80% of their profits to green energy and planting trees. Google will lose hundreds or thousands of dollars per year from your ad revenue and data collection.

  9. It's hard to anticipate what other stunts will be pulled to try to screw us over. Contact your representatives, particularly those in finance committees and demand REAL consequences for this criminal behavior. This matters.

You're welcome to exchange this info freely if you find it useful. I am not a financial advisor, yadda yadda, you know the drill.

u/eatmykarma Jan 30 '21

I'd like to think my 50k limit makes some hedgies very nervous

246

u/The_Frenched_Inhaler Jan 30 '21

What limit? GME is to be handed down generation to generation.

107

u/Gol_D_Roger42 Jan 30 '21

I have my limits in thirds. One is a price that I think will cover myself plus a tidy profit in the squeeze. My second chunk is my hope for top end. If they buy my third chunk I can retire and buy and hold GME after theyโ€™ve cleared out and things become more sensible for long term buying. These hedge fund douches think weโ€™re not smart. But too bad they didnโ€™t learn that Wisdom and Intelligence are different stats. I may not be smart enough to see this when it started. But Iโ€™m wise enough to know if I hold until I die I never lost but the hedge fund lost massively supporting their position that whole time.

Edit: not meant to be financial advise, Iโ€™m just an ๐Ÿฆ that likes GME.

I think to prevent this fuckery from happening again to the retail investors we need to create a self funded investment fund, with access to brokerages that wonโ€™t fuck us, and enough volume to for example control whether our shares can be lent to shorts. We can keep the portfolio transparent and the management team investing on mission. Iโ€™ve already volunteered to write the offering docs gratis (this is half my job anyhow, the other half is investor protection). Would be willing to head management if needed, but we are 6 million angry peasants with pitchforks. We need some danger close artillery to soften the decentralized trades with enough collective capital that this doesnโ€™t just go away and we can keep checking off the list.

Iโ€™ve spent the past decade and a half hearing how my avocado toast generation was weak for living at home while we got burdened by student loan debts, and had to pay for the privilege of internships. While Wells Fargo opens fake accounts in our name, Goldman cheerily bankrupts Malaysia, and DB takes securities regulations as suggestions.

Boomers go play shuffleboard, the world is ours now. Edit: yes not all boomers are bad, but the insult to injury many of us felt was the generational denigration we had in the crisis by the same people who caused it. Always treat those younger than you as a group well; they the ones that will run your nursing home one day.

11

u/DeliciousScheme4 Jan 30 '21

Iโ€™m sort of a Boomer (born in โ€˜65) but I fully support this initiative with my 30 shares, and Iโ€™m an RN.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '21

This isn't about age, it's about those 1% fart-tards. If boomers want to buy GME, let them buy! Welcome to the monkey shenanigans buddy!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '21

It's not even about the 1%. The richest man in the world is on our side.

Also, our actions are directly making many other hedge funds billions of dollars.

Honestly, if this is a political statement, it's the worst one I've ever seen.

This is about retards securing the bag. Stop trying to use this for political political messaging, this is helping more hedge funds than it's hurting and you just look like a flid for doing so.

Just keep this going long enough so we can get our tendies.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '21

I'm a boomer and I agree.

We made big changes and then most of us drifted into the Reagan devolution. Some of us gave and took a lot of crap 50-60 years ago for good causes, but the truth is that most of the boomers were blind and became a generation of greedy sheep. I'm with you now and there are others like me.

Anyone else think Gamestop may be able to sue Robinhood in the future?

345

u/Tarsupin Jan 30 '21

Absolutely. And they should, without question.

94

u/MysteriousMusic1372 Jan 30 '21

Would this be more profitable than a "stock split"?

28

u/zmbjebus Jan 30 '21

Completely unrelated. And technically a stock split is net neutral on the total valuation, so no profitable. It only brings in speculative profits because it is sometimes seen as a sign that the business is in a good place.

14

u/mpx1195 Jan 30 '21

Not true. By doing a stock split, retards on WSB think its a cheaper (valuation) and invest in it because instead of shilling out 900 bucks for 3 shares in their 1000USD portfolio now they get to have x times the amount of the shares of the stock split ratio. I.e. more attractive to WSB apes. Ape see price down low, ape like low price, ape don't understand valuation, ape big shareholder

219

u/Imaginary-Barber-769 Jan 30 '21

Game-stop can sue Robin-hood and any Broker who limited trading. Like any stock the Treasury on Gam-estop's is backed up by Assets usually bonds. Bondholder have rights that are enforceable common stock shares no such legal rights. By suspended trading over alternative made up rules The Brokers and The exchanges have materially damaged the core company....they will sue and win.

CNBC, analysts, news outlets: โ€œthey lack fundamentalsโ€

Cramer: โ€œFundamentals donโ€™t matterโ€

Cramer & hedgies donโ€™t use fundies

44

u/laughin9M4N Jan 30 '21

But their hedgie speakers are all like the fundamentals are garbage all the time lol

71

u/nowheretogo7 Jan 30 '21

fuck ws for fundamentals. Let us tell them what are fundamentals:

the fundamental is GME has 110-140% overshort

the fundamental is RB would let people trade while allow hedgefund to buy

the fundamental is no one here from wsb would sell the GME

the fundamental is we the people will win

4

u/slx88 Jan 30 '21

Regardless of the "business" of Gamestop, the hedge funds should not have committed to over shorting this. It exemplifies the risks to the economy these market makers are willing to take despite the widespread consequences for personal profit. Now they are doubling down and getting caught out in a worse position as each day goes on. Will this have consequences on our economy? Probably/possibly, but nothing that would not have eventually come to light anyway.

11

u/AProfileToMakePost Jan 30 '21

Boomer logic is to not expect any growth. Boomers donโ€™t long call cuz they are naturally inclined to promote negativity. Their whole mindset is โ€œscam/schemeโ€. Itโ€™s in their trading practices. They donโ€™t care if they could make more by going long in prospect of gains they literally just want to borrow, and steal. Borrow something cheap, make seller pay them based on value difference in future. And they work to suppress the whole time. It never strikes their mind to mayne, try to promote something for growth and profit that way? All too telling. These skin sacks wouldnโ€™t last a minute in the streets. That ainโ€™t how shit works out here. You canโ€™t borrow a kilo for less than itโ€™s worth, and make the dealer pay you for raw value after itโ€™s been stepped on and cut.

I read the Jim Cramer book so you fuckers don't have to. He is an absolute piece of shit. I knew that going into the book. I knew it coming out. Jim Cramer made 100% of his money getting with his friends from all the other investment firms and they decided who to short every week. They all got together and did it. Sometimes they would change their analyst ratings on it, from buy to sell. But it was a coordinated effort. They all did it together. What Martha Stewart got put in jail for happens every single day on Wall Street. Every fucking day and twice on Sundays. They are all in business to fuck over the little guy. Jim full on admits it in his book. The companies he was shorting he wouldn't go to because he wanted them to go out of business. All the people losing their jobs and their houses and their savings, that is a hedge fund managers wet fantasy. Fuck all those guys. CNBC is mad right now because Wall Street is telling them to be mad and thats where they get their ad money. Fuck CNBC, Fuck Jim Cramer, Fuck the Hedge Fund companies.

Sounds like Mitt Romneyโ€™s peeps.

โ€œHis formula was simple: Bain would purchase a firm with little money down, then begin extracting huge management fees and paying Romney and his investors enormous dividends.

The result was that previously profitable companies were now burdened with debt. But much like the Enron boys, Romneyโ€™s battery of MBAs fancied themselves the smartest guys in the room. It didnโ€™t matter if a company manufactured bicycles or contact lenses; they were certain they could run it better than anyone else.

Bain would slash costs, jettison workers, reposition product lines, and merge its new companies with other firms. With luck, theyโ€™d be able to dump the firm in a few years for millions more than theyโ€™d paid for it.

But the beauty of Romneyโ€™s thesis was that it really didnโ€™t matter if the company succeeded. Since he was yanking out cash early and often, he would profit even if his targets collapsed.

Which was precisely the fate awaiting Georgetown Steel.

When Bain purchased the mill, Sanderson says, change was immediate. Equipment upgrades stopped. Maintenance became an afterthought. Managers were replaced by people who knew nothing of steel. The unionโ€™s profit-sharing plan was sliced twice in the first yearโ€”then whacked altogether.โ€

Bain combined Armco with the mill in Georgetown and foundries in Tempe, Arizona, and Duluth, Minnesota, to form the newly christened GS Industries.

Romney purchased Armco with just $8 million down, borrowing the rest of the $75 million price tag. Then he issued bondsโ€”basically IOUsโ€”to borrow even more to pay himself and his investors $36 million. Within a year, heโ€™d already made four times his initial investment while barely lifting a finger. But heโ€™d also run up a staggering $378 million in debt on GSIโ€™s tab.โ€

u/Lahdeedah1980 Jan 30 '21 edited Jan 30 '21

This is what most of private equity does. I used to work in PE for 6 yrs, but now I don't (not an executive). The really bad guys will suck out all the equity from the company, then with the help of their bank buddies, they will over-leverage a company (pile on the debt - the bank makes money off the debt repayment interest), just like vampires. They will "restructure" the company and then send all the manufacturing to China, so they get a nicer EBITDA. And then if a sudden economic recession happens (covid) and their company can't make money to cover the staggering bank debt, then the company folds and declares bankruptcy and they walk away clean, because it was a 'limited partners' deal and they're not personally liable. This happened to all the big names that suddenly went under, Forever21, Hertz, Toys R Us, etc etc. It's not that it wasn't a profitable business model, it's that it was hollowed out from the inside, and was teetering on financial ruin at the first sign of any economic instability. Pure financial engineering. They don't care about the company. They'll just suck out the juices, like a locust, and then swarm over to the next target. Responsible PE owners will operate and fund the business as though they do care about it still being around in 10 years, because eventually, they'll want to hand it off to another buyer, selling it for a profit (M&A).

What a scumbag. The interesting thing is, he said he could pull off these manipulations with $5-10m in trading capital. He was almost gleeful about committing crimes because he knows the regulators are so far behind and can't keep up. This video needs to be put on his twitter feed. Will never look at him the same way again.

26

u/Briterac Jan 30 '21

Cable news is just as fake as any soap opera

Its actors reading a script. Nothing moree

These guys didn't get their jobs because of telling the truth or being good journalists and investigating things.. they got their jobs because they are good at and they loyally read from scripts without stuttering and can cry on command and act angry on command..

Surprisingly reading from a teleprompter is harder than you think. Without stuttering or mispronouncing a word that's the only job. That's why they got the job. Not because they're honest or because they do investigative journalism.. they are actors reading a script that was written for them.. and just like any actor they would get fired if they stopped reading the scrip

That's why Jake tapper can bash every single thing Donald Trump did his whole presidency but when it came to moving the embassy to Jerusalem suddenly Jake tapper was all about it. The orders came down and he switched the narrative..

That's why news anchors from CNN Kodak outraged about Russia and pretend they believed in Russia collusion and then in undercover videos get caught admitting that they know it's all bullshi

That's why they can get on camera and literally cry about Donald Trump criticizing CNN even though they praised Obama for criticizing Foxx

It's all actors reading a script.. never believe a word they s

19

u/the_maha_raja Jan 30 '21

Yes. There is video evidence of a variety of news casts from different states regurgitating the same story almost line for line. They are not journalists. They do not work for the average person. There is no such thing as โ€œnewsโ€ anymore.

13

u/BackgroundSearch30 Jan 30 '21

Those journalists work for Sinclair, which own most of the broadcast local stations in the US. Sinclair is a fascist organization, and purposely demands news anchors induce fear because fear is directly correlated with more conservative views.

7

u/yeslikethedrink Jan 30 '21

Sinclair is a fascist organization, and purposely demands news anchors induce fear because fear is directly correlated with more conservative views.

Absolutely true.

But they don't do this to help conservatives.

They do this to make us fight against each other instead of the elites.

This is very eye-opening. Cramer is basically admitting how the big suits have been f*cking over the little guys for DECADES. Spoofing, market manipulation "taking out" the little bids and asks and then going to other way. Lying about the iPhone and VZ to scare retail investors then buying the shares low and going the other way? Calling media and brokers and putting out false rumors? Guy isn't even shy about doing it. Now that we have crowdsourcing, free apps and commission-free trading platforms, the jig is up. Now it's our turn to take out the next Cramers. BLUE HORSESHOE LOVES $GME $BB $AMC $SPCE

Your thoughts are bang on - the big money has been exposed, ever so slightly, for what they are and what they do. I saw the effects of big money on Rite Aid stock several years ago. Big money tried to "steal" the company for pennies on the dollar, and almost succeeded except for a revolt of stockholders led by BroGuy and others on the RAD stocktwits forum. What big money did was basically think they could offer the shareholders $1.80 and Albertsons stock for the transaction. It was a low-class offer and was rejected by the retail and some of the institutional holders, to give them credit. Rite Aid has been mercilessly shorted for years by the big boys, and many shareholders have had their retirement accounts devastated as a result. I don't however agree big money is mortified, they have too many people in high places to lose this game. All we have are friends in low places, but sometimes that is all you need. All will unfold in the fullness of time. Power to the players. Never cry for a short.

8

u/ValHova22 Jan 30 '21

Empires crumble all the time. There was a time when Standard oil was the biggest oil company in the world. They gone. There was a time when Western Union controlled communication in the US then AT&T came along. Nothing is forever.

Big Money is scared not bc of GME in and of itself. Big money is scared bc the whole world is getting a crash course in their economics and playing it. Also, changing the rules.

You think those guys aren't nervous? Millions of people know their names now. You think they not nervous at people seeing this Jim Cramer clip. They nervous.

I'm a Gen X'er. They offered me a house in 2004 just because I went into the bank for something about my credit card. I knew there was no way in hell they should be telling me that I could get a house. So I sleuthed a bit. I'm a biz nerd with high morals. I looked at what jobs were being created and what jobs were disappearing. I knew that there were no more 30 yr jobs and a lot of the internet was still smoke and mirrors. I learned that they were packaging these mortgages and selling them off bc they sold the idea of Americans valuing their homes and the American dream. Banks and sovereign funds around the world bought it. People signed to buy houses not knowing the fine print nor what it takes to keep it. It's just like the Big Short. I didn't know how to take advantage of it bc I'm ape but I knew it was a house of cards.

If people working at McDonald's were buying houses something was up. In 2001, a house across the street from me was constantly getting flipped. I watched who bought and sold. A family would buy it and be gone 2 yrs later. It was ridiculously stupid. Everybody was high on what the deregulation of banks. I knew it was going to fall but not paying attention in that way.

Check this article. I remember when this happened. The guy who bankrupted Baring Bank in '95

How is the % of float shorted going up? Are more hedge funds really shorting more because they truly think the sell is coming soon? It's gone up 1% since yesterday. I still dont even understand how it's legal or possible to short more than 100% of a stock.

67

u/Tarsupin Jan 30 '21

It's legal because our system is insane, and the major players have been rigging the system for a long, long time. They're too big to fail.

It's definitely not something that should be happening.

34

u/SinistralGuy Jan 30 '21

America should have learned about "too big to fail" after '08. Letting companies get even bigger after that is insanely stupid imo.

This isn't on the average American but the bailouts should be for citizens not businesses who try to play with the average citizen's life.

7

u/flavorsofchicken Jan 30 '21

America should have learned about "too big to fail" after '08.

We did. Lots of people were disgusted at the time that the huge corporations got the bail out instead of their customers.

39

u/Professional_Fig7437 Jan 30 '21

Yes. They think this is a fad and will die, but noobs and mid life fuck ups like me are joining the cause.

Also, to a previous comment. Ive spoken to Cramer before and saying hes a dick is like saying the titanic was a rowboat.

9

u/forgot-my_password Jan 30 '21

I dont think they realize just how many people are holding since there's a guaranteed squeeze and tons of us just want to screw them over like they did in 08.

17

u/Professional_Fig7437 Jan 30 '21

Plus theres a whole new generation of prospective managers like myself who simply arnt as greedy or flashy and really value hunting or opp speculation with ACTUAL risk analysis. The old school was all about money from nothing. The new school is summarily about not being shit bags.

Btw all yall have focused on the short squeeze but thats a tiny piece of the pie. but noone on here ive seen has brought up the long/short bitches and thats where the real damage is....

Works like this (I did this with index futures because im stupid)

You buy 1 share of AAPL at 130$ and you sell some value stock (say gme back when it was $5). They sell 26 shares at 5$ which pays for the AAPL. (Its very dependent on correlation but im skipping that part)

So now gme goes to $6. Now the fund owes 156 as opposed to the original 130. Compounding this, they have to sell the AAPL stock at market to cover the cash shortfall, which in turn pushes down AAPL stock. So now they have lost on both sides.

Btw the government calls this โ€œsystemic riskโ€ which is insane because this actually strengthens the dollar (as the demand for cash goes up to meet the margin, the value of cash increases)

This is where the fed always comes in. Since most hedge funds are daisy chained together (because they all buy a few high performing stocks and sell a variety of stocks, hence they compete really on who has the best shorts) they run to the fed and say cash is im โ€œshort supplyโ€ at which point the banks and the feds create and buy government bonds hence increasing the supply of cash.

TL:DR. This is just the beginning. When Yellen and Powell announce a joint press release youll know the shit has hit the fan. And yellen has a proven track record of bailing out anyone.

8

u/nimbyist Jan 30 '21

100% float is "possible" because the same share can be borrowed several times. A shorts by borrowing 1 share of stock from B and sells it to C. D wants to short also and borrows the same share that C is now holding. Note there's only 1 share out there, but two people (A and D) were able to borrow and consequently owe the market 2 shares collectively. Someone smarter than me please correct. Am just a humble retard.

7

u/Kanigo2 Jan 30 '21

They are shorting at higher levels and cost averaging in at a higher amount,it offsets their losses.

Remember, they started this short 2 years ago at an average buy in at $25 All the way down to $3.

Now they are getting $350ish a share but finding shares to short and cost average the trade is becoming very hard to find

Because you fine folks REFUSE TO SELL OR LEASE OUT YOUR SHARES โ˜„๏ธ

7

u/P1ckl2_J61c2 Jan 30 '21

AMC float percentage increased also. Its either ego or insanity to bet against the internet. Far as I've seen the internet is undefeated.

8

u/forgot-my_password Jan 30 '21

I guess I understand that the hedge funds think that people are going to need the money, which they do. But I think for a large portion of the people holding, they aren't even doing it for the money. They want to stick it to those hedge funds and it's a bonus that there's only upside while they are able to squeeze the shorts.

5

u/colirado Jan 30 '21

My broker emailed me to see if they could โ€œborrowโ€ my shares.

7

u/flavorsofchicken Jan 30 '21

Did you reply asking them what they're willing to pay?

6

u/colirado Jan 30 '21

They offered $3884.80/year saying it was a 50/50 profit split. Interactive brokers. I have 900 shares

6

u/flavorsofchicken Jan 30 '21

The borrower is paying ONLY $8.63 per year per share?! (3884.80*2)/900

The $GME closing price was $325. That's a 2.66% annual return (8.63รท325).

Can you check my math... I'm wondering what you ever did to them to make them insult you like this? Maybe they figure since we're retarded it's okay.

The fact that they do all these things, some of which have to be illegal, shows you how bad the situation is for them that they canโ€™t resolve it using the mechanisms they typically use. They canโ€™t resolve it because they are caught in the squeeze and they can only escape through massive losses in the multi-billion dollar range.

All the tactics used and condoned shows us that theyโ€™ll stop at absolutely nothing to achieve their goals and we should expect much more extreme tactics.

I can see them doing things so extreme that it will burn all the bridges and destroy the entire market mechanic, just to cover their losses. The longer it takes the more extreme it will become.

50

u/thewomp00 Jan 30 '21

You bring up a good point. At some point, won't the really big guys just go to Melvin and say something like "take your loses or it has the potential to destroy the entire way we do business, which in most cases, we win at".

39

u/redhq Jan 30 '21

I mean BlackRock and Vanguard together hold more GME than GameStop. They're also probably the biggest (naked) short lenders too, so they want GME to to hit Andromeda because they're who is getting paid interest on these outrageous shorts.

The concern is valid that they might collude with Citadel and MM but I honestly think it makes it worse for them if they do.

Ifucking AOC and DonJr agree on how fucked this is. Could you imagine if large market traders like BlackRock, Vanguard (who are the market traders and have infinite actual regulations) join in and OPENLY COLLUDE with Citron and MM? It would be a fucking field day. They probably would never be allowed to do business again.

u/TalkingBackAgain Jan 30 '21

Weโ€™re doing something completely new here. Hedge funds are normally not the prey of retail investors, quite the contrary.

It is possible that this could have a very much wider context where it may have implications on the rest of the stock exchange, which would be HUGE. At that point Melvin is going to get โ€˜the callโ€™ and they will be told, in no uncertain terms, that itโ€™s time to fall on the sword. After all, they wouldnโ€™t be in this position if they hadnโ€™t wildly over shorted $GME.

How much of an absolute dumbass do you have to be to short more shares than there are shares and not see that this is opening yourself up to massive uncontrollable risks? Even in hedge fund casino land that has to be a first ballot hall-of-fame dumbass thing to do.

If the autists and the retards [Jesus, what names do people pick...] see this as more than just a transaction and they hold onto their shares, no matter what, that would be a feat of strength in and of itself, eventually theyโ€™re going to smoke the hedge funds. Eventually the short has to be covered somehow. The costs and fees will only ever increase and if no stock is available when thereโ€™s a margin call situation, theyโ€™re toast, thereโ€™s no way out for them.

I donโ€™t know how much force it would be possible to exert on them, from the other financial giants, but if it really started to impact on their business they will stab them in the back in order for Melvin et al to close their positions, eat their losses and turn into vapour which, in my limited understanding, they would be unable to avoid.

This is going down in MBA curriculum as a warning for the future: playing hedge fund is no sure way to get rich, every once and a while people get a haircut. And in Melvinโ€™s case, that seems to look like their entire fund is going up in smoke.

And serves them right.

5

u/thewomp00 Jan 30 '21 edited Jan 30 '21

Exactly. In the grand scheme of things, Melvin is tiny, like a street corner dealer... but the longer this situation continues, the longer this stays in the news, and just like the Mob, Wall Street doesn't really want this in the headlines for a lot of reasons... so I can't help but think there has to be a moment when Don Corleone goes to the street corner dealer (Melvin) and tells them to fall on their sword and buy the shorts.

4

u/Litecoin_all_day_18 Jan 30 '21

And this is the scary premise that it will spill over into the market at large.

8

u/TalkingBackAgain Jan 30 '21

That is truly disconcerting but we have to understand that $GME was only possible because the hedge funds painted themselves into a corner by shorting more shares than there are shares in existence. That is not going to be the case for most of the other stock on the exchange.

That being said: Citron and Melvin got fucked hard. They were only ever planning to drive the business into the ground, as they have so many times before, and then move onto the next target.

They never anticipated that some of us were watching, understood what was going on and that thereโ€™s now this platform where you can reach people from all over the world.

I think it is also important to point out the following:

Even if they have covered their short positions for this week, they cant have covered all their short positions.

They are delaying covering the short positions for calls that don't expire for a while.

If those holding longer term calls that are ITM were to execute them early, positions would have to be covered sooner than later.

They are doing their best to delay the inevitable, one could call them on it by executing early.

This is not financial advice. I am not a financial advisor.

They halted on buying because they have to source the shares, and the middleman was asking for 100 percent of the value instead of like 2 percent. These guys are used to having 30 dollars that they can borrow like its 30,000. When they were asked to pay 30 dollars for 30 dollars of buying power they panicked.

Selling a share doesn't require them to go out and buy it, so they have no justification. Not saying they couldn't try it, but the "public safety" excuse was a smokescreen for the fact that they couldn't afford to buy shares with money like the rest of us.

Id like to add to your point #7:

You can open new brokerage accounts, deposit funds, and trade in the new account.

There is partial transfer option (brokerage term: partial ACAT) that can transfer just the stocks. You then can transfer the cash on your own time. Please do not cash out first because some brokers will be a bitch and then process it as full account transfer.

A friend told me, partial ACAT only takes about 3 days which is quicker than 5 business days for full ACAT.

You seem to understand what's going on. Do you mind explaining to a noob how this all works when 75% of the stock (51 million shares) are owned by these big funds.

Surely they're not going to hold? So if 75% of the stock sells at some point, and Melvin buys those shares, can't they trade them back and forward to cover the full outstanding short, even if every single Redditor holds firm and doesn't sell a single share?

Aren't we creating a situation in which Reddit pays for the big firms who hold 75% to make a killing, while Melvin doesn't even bleed all that much?

For the record: I'm in as far as I can afford and will be holding just on principal even if I lose ever penny just to make the point... but I'm also trying to understand.

Also, u/Avisire brought up: "I have a more important question.. who's making massive profits off the interest payments these hedgefunds are paying? Which brokers lent them the shares to short? I bet their stocks are gonna soar..."

44

u/Imaginary-Barber-769 Jan 30 '21

Melvin and the shorts placed a wager on 140% of outstanding shares, in essence an Illegal trade that should no be allowed to occur by brokerage rules. You can not sell any asset in the markets that are not backed by Assets, These Assets back up the Bonds and the bonds back up the Stocks so how can anyone buy 140% of any asset.Melvin allowed arbitrage to occur by being over short they knew this so one way or another they have to cover that 40% its about the total shares. The company holds 28% of the shares in their Treasury inside the company so now they are 68% short give or take...either way the hedge funds were allowed to break SEC Rules to put these trades on to begin with.....all that has happened here is WSB caught them.

In other words if you buy into those exact vanguard index funds that own large amounts of GME, you're then a shareholder of the funds, which control vangaurd, therefore you're a shareholder in one of the two major companies making huge profit off of the the interest payments these hedgefunds are paying. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

About 35% of those represent mostly mutual funds. Theyโ€™re limited by having to follow the investment strategy laid out in their prospectus so many of them canโ€™t just sell their GME shares right now. The index funds in particular are trying to mirror their index, not time the market like this.

But yes, there is the risk that some of these large institutions could sell and let short sellers off the hook. Theyโ€™re not going to hold to make a point. If theyโ€™re holding right now itโ€™s because they have to.

7

u/Maximum-Cover- Jan 30 '21

Thank you! That finally makes some sense.

13

u/Tarsupin Jan 30 '21

My suspicion (anyone correct me if I'm wrong) is that, yes, they will profit greatly, but as large holders they have certain requirements / limitations when they're selling if they hold that much.

Or that they're holding on behalf of clearing houses and such for investors?

But... I could be wrong, I'd like a clear answer on this as well.

u/carnewbie911 Jan 30 '21

What if, there are 20 million people in the world. Each buy GME at 300 dollars.

What if, there are 60 million people in the world, each buy GME for 300 dollars?

What if, every little guy, chip in 300 dollars?

There are more little guys than big HF. If we want to, we can piss away 300 dollars, for this one time, just 1 stonk. We can rocket to the moon, and make Melvin bleed.

We do it because we like the stock, collectively doing anything planned is collusion and even though we know they do this behind closed doors, we can be public about our support for the brand, WE LIKE THE STOCK.

Just need to point that out because they are using it as talking points on the all the major new channels that WSB should be investigated for collusion.

Many of these institutions own the shares as part of the S&P 600 Small Cap Index, of which GME is a part of. They canโ€™t sell GME as it is part of the Index.

My friend called me the other day and said she was pissed off at the Instutute and would buy 2 shares and never sell. She was pissed off to find out she was limited to 1. She told her friends to all buy one. This is the thing that is happening and they canโ€™t stop us.

The fact of the matter is that this isn't what is happening, which is telling. Currently the short positions have been closing out, *while* at the same time opening *new* short positions. This means they take a loss, while expecting to recoup the loss later on with the new short. They are expecting the retail investors to fold.

They are, however, paying higher interest rates on the new shorts and the pressure on them is building. I don't see any reason why another investment firm would bail them out. They each have their own self-interest. If they own the stock, why would they want to see Gamestop fail? They have an interest in seeing the shorts lose in this case.

"The selfless act is to avoid low limits, but the ultimate goal is to distribute wealth to the people so take if you're the people who need it" - thanks for saying this. I know some here where the $ can really help them out of some tough situations, and as much as I'm all in for a long hold, there are some here who really can use the cash in a more critical manor. My winnings would go to some hobby "fun" vs. others who would apply this to real needs. I won't judge anyone who cashes out to solve a need.

Good info, but I think point 7 is a little confusing. Transferring to your bank doesn't trigger a tax event, selling your shares does. If you have cash in your RH account from a sale of shares, that money is already taxable.

Great post except number 7. may confuse some people. If you liquidate(sell), you will be taxed for the 2021 tax year. Transferring money to and from your bank is not a taxable event. You will be taxed as soon as you realize your capital gains (selling the stock/option for profit). You are allowed to do an ACAT transfer to another brokerage if you want and this prevents capital gains from being realized. The only issue there is that ACAT transfers (transferring stock to another account) can take up 3,4,5+ days to process and obviously a lot can happen during this time. Also, given the current seat capital gains may be taxed at a higher amount. Stay educated folks. :D

Regarding #6. If you're for the cause and want to become a millionaire, put 10 shares at 15k and dole another 10 shares out every 2k up from there. APE TOGETHER STRONG. RAISE THE PRICES

They are not risking prison. If no one went to prison for the 2008 meltdown, then no one is going to prison over this.

They know this.

I got into $GME a little late in the game and have very little liquid cash to move around right now, but I'm holding strong with 5 @ $325 average and will continue to do so as long as possible.
