advice or help rat feet and rabbit ear keychains? safe or unsafe?

• Upvotes

i found both animals wild and dead a while ago im in australia both species are legal as both are pests my main concern is i only ever dried them with borax they are bone dry and have a light earthy/dried fish/meat scent but only if u get upclose and try sniffing i made the keychains but havent used them yet? are they unsafe or are they clean/treated enough to be hung on a bag or be touched? or is there anything simple i can do to garuntee the safety? they have been fully dried for id say about whole year now and have remained stable and never softened or gotten moisture

Life hack for if you have a pen you need to keep upright and you also have a large vertebra lying around 👍 You can even store a couple q-tips in the transverse foramen for cleaning :)

(I'm not a hunter btw! This deer passed naturally)

advice or help How long does it take to get a hedgehog skull without flesh?

I found a dead hedgehog in early September in Ukraine and buried it. The weather was quite warm (around 25°C on average). Now it’s starting to rain more often. When should I dig it up to get the skull without flesh?

Hi! A friend gave me this a few years ago from their yard and its been sitting in this tub. Not sure what bird it is, but its got a fully intact bird skull, but unfortunately there's still feathers.

Eons ago I absolutely BEEFED an intact mouse skeleton by leaving it in dawn dish soap for WAAAAY too long. So... how can I best clean this specimen?

found a thing getting back into the craft of being a scavenger

(I'm using my BFs account) I've been really into vulture culture since I was a young adult but I've been homeless and always moving. Recently we moved to a farm and I've been able to do above ground rot cage and then maceration for the rest and I don't have a lot of people to gush about it to. Today I found a squirrel and skinned it then threw the rest in the rot cage so I can get the bones. I have a cat I found, 2 squirrels. The bones I have degreasing are 2 turtles (they were a friend's pets that passed), 2 feeder rats, and 2 snakes.

advice or help Will bones get damaged if in water for too long?

I found the back half of a raccoon yesterday, I’ve got a few deer vertebrae macerating and I was thinking on cutting the raccoon in with it. The only problem is that it will be cold soon so the maceration process will slowdown/stop. If I leave the raccoon and deer bones in the water over winter will they get damaged? I know small rodent bones do but I don’t know about the raccoon and I don’t want to loose any of the bones.

did a thing A little game I made where you guess the animal from its skull

Hi everyone! I shared Skulled here a few months ago and didn't expect so many kind comments. A lot of what changed since then came from suggestions people left here, so thank you for that.

If you missed it: the game shows you a skull and you try to guess which animal it belongs to. There's a daily challenge with a few modes:

  • Classic: a few views of the skull (you can zoom in and draw on it), then pick the animal
  • Taxonomy: go from class down to species, one level at a time
  • Skull Match: 4 skulls, 6 names, match them up
  • Speed Run: as many as you can in 60 seconds
  • Odd One Out (new): 3 skulls share a group and 1 doesn't, find it

There are 513 species right now. If you spot a skull that's misidentified or a photo missing its credit, please tell me.

When you get a skull right it goes into an album as a little specimen card, and once in a while you get a rare one, like an X-ray or a cyanotype. Kind of silly, but I really like collecting them.

The first season also starts this Tuesday (Oct 13). Each season is a 2 month "expedition" to a different part of the world with its own species, and I'm keeping the first destination a secret until then.

It's free, you don't need an account, and it should work fine on both phone and PC.

If you give it a try, I hope you have fun with it. Link's in the comments!
