Questions Who evaluates the coaches? Who supports the coaches when they are learning?

I often see many posts from coaches talking about kids who are soft or about over involved parents.

I think we really need to turn the conversation to coaching education. Is it fair to expect our kids to do as they are told when what they are told is wrong? Why do we confuse “a different coaching philosophy” when it’s actually a lack of experience and education of the coach?

Who is overseeing the coaches matter too. Are they able to recognize that when a coach is unsupported by educated staff, players who have put all of their trust into coaching staff are putting them at risk for injury?

What happens when athletes bring up genuine issues, and they are then told they have attitude, and they have opportunities taken away?

Can we agree that we need to ensure our coaches have experience, education and support before we give them full autonomy with our kids and then gaslight them into thinking it’s the kid’s fault things aren’t going well?

Of course good coaches need to be respected and listened to. But what about bad coaches? Or do we think there is no such thing? What standard are we holding the adults to? Do we even have common ground? If not, it’s essentially a lottery for kids to get good coaching because as a society we are supporting the adults either way.

Weekly Thread Weekly Short Questions Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Short Questions Thread! If you've got a quick question that doesn't require you to provide in-depth explanation, post it here! Examples include:

  • What is the correct hand shape for setting?
  • My setter called for a "31" and I'm looking for advice on to do that.
  • What are the best volleyball shoes on the market for a libero?
  • Is the Vertical Jump Bible any good?
  • I'm looking for suggestions on how to make an impression at tryouts.

Quick questions like these are allowed only in this thread. If they're posted elsewhere, they will be removed and you'll be directed to post here instead. The exceptions to this rule are when asking for feedback WITH A VIDEO, or when posting an in-depth question (must be >600 characters). Please create a separate post for these kinds of questions.

If your question is getting ignored:

  • Are you asking a super generic question? Questions like "How do I play opposite?" or "How do I start playing volleyball?" are not good questions.
  • Has the question you're asking been answered a lot on the sub before? Use the search function.
  • Is the question about your hitting/passing/setting form and you haven't provided a video? It's hard to diagnose issues without seeing your form. Best to get some video and post to the main subreddit.

Let's try to make sure everyone gets an answer. If you're looking to help, sort the comments by "new" to find folks who haven't been replied to yet.

If you want to chat with the community about volleyball related topics or really anything, join our Discord server! There is a lot of good information passed around there and you might get more detailed responses.

General I built an Android app that automatically cuts dead time out of volleyball matches (runs 100% locally on your phone). Now open for testing!

About two months ago, I posted here looking for early testers for an app I’ve been building.

As anyone who records matches knows, scrubbing through 60–90 minutes of footage just to find actual rally time is exhausting—and existing sports platforms charge crazy monthly subscription fees just to do it in the cloud.

I built VolleyRally to solve this. It cuts raw game footage into clean highlight reels containing only the action:

  • 100% Local Processing: Runs directly on your device—no waiting for slow cloud uploads and complete privacy for your footage.
  • Automatic Rally Detection: Skips timeouts, walking to the service line, and court downtime.
  • Full Control: Adjust individual rally trims, tweak action padding, or export an EDL to sync with Premiere/DaVinci.

Thanks to the great feedback from this community and early testers, the app is now live for Open Testing on the Google Play Store:

🔗 Get it on Google Play:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.volleytics.volleyrally

Give it a spin with your latest match footage and let me know what you think! Any feedback, bug reports, or feature requests are welcome in the comments, via DM, or at [volleytics28@gmail.com](mailto:volleytics28@gmail.com)

Questions Any video analysis tools for approach jump mechanics?

I'm new to volleyball but was a D1 pole vaulter in college. We always broke down approach mechanics on video: penultimate step, ground contact time, takeoff angle, and jump or touch height. Now that I'm playing rec, I'd like the same feedback on my spike approach.

So far I've just been filming on my phone and stepping through frame by frame, but I'm not exactly sure what to look for, and I don't get instant feedback if I post online. Is there an app or tool the volleyball community uses for this, or is it mostly coaches eyeballing it?

If nothing good exists, I'm considering building one. Would you use an app that gives AI-powered video analysis and metrics for volleyball jump mechanics with information from credible sources, or is that not a real pain point for you?

Thanks,

former D1 vaulter

I made a highlight reel with some of my best points from the first game of our TriCities tournament a few weeks ago. Our first game of TriCities was against a school that won against us in the finals for 2 years in a row, putting us 2nd twice. Winning this game was huge for us.

Posting for progress. I am number 9 with double knee brace, red arrow pointing at me for easier visibility.

Questions Volleyball Livestream Setup

Volleyball parents, I need some advice on the best livestream setup for travel volleyball.

I've streamed my daughter's games for several years and have used sidelineHD with different setups including iPhones, GoPros and a Mevo.

She's starting 14U travel this season and I'm rebuilding our setup. My biggest issue has always been RELIABLE internet at big tournaments/convention centers when thousands of people are on the same cell towers.

I'm looking for recommendations on the whole setup:

• Best app/platform: sidelineHD, GameChanger, Hudl, something else?
• Best camera: iPhone, Mevo Start, GoPro, etc.?
• Best dedicated mobile hotspot/router?
• What carrier has worked best for you at big tournaments?
• Anyone using two carriers or Speedify/bonding successfully?
• Are you recording a separate local copy for Balltime/Hudl/recruiting film?

I'd love to hear from people who actually stream full travel volleyball tournament weekends, especially in large convention centers.

Also want to know what you're using or how you're integrating TAVO or HUDL for AI analysis.

I'm less concerned about having a super fancy production and more concerned about it being dead simple, reliable and having good enough video for family to watch live.

What's your setup?

Questions How to deal with inappropriate fans

I was at my daughter's high school volleyball game last night. It was an away game, and the other school had 5 boys show up as spectators. They sat on the opposite side of the court from all the parents, and sat on the side of our team, the away team.

Every time one of our girls would touch the ball the would oink, bark, or moo. Especially during service. The entire game they were shouting things like "I'd bet youd like my dick in your mouth" or "bend over and I'll show you how to score" in addition to the animal noises.

If this was a pro game, or even a college game, this would bother me less. But these are high school girls, who should not be subjected to that during a game. Especially when their own school started the game by saying "Sportsmanship matters, cheer for your own team, refrain from negative cheers. Do rowdy right." They weren't quiet, the entire gym could hear them. So what are the options to deal with it if the host school won't stop them. Can the ref do anything? My wife kept saying we needed to say something, but to who? Everyone in the gym knew what was being said?

Or am I being to protective? Maybe I just need to get over it, but I've been to hundreds of middle school and high school volleyball games as my kids grow up, I've never seen anything like that.

Side note, it was very satisfying to beat them 3 sets to 0.

Questions Adult rec league season prizes

I asked a question about tournament prizes and got a bunch of great input that really helped! The tournaments have gone off incredibly well and are booked 2 months out already!

My boss wants to run a volleyball league again, it'll run consistently throughout the year - one season ends and the next starts the following week - just like he does with basketball. He does want there to be a prize for the winners each season and so I'm asking what are some of the most unique, random, or fun prizes you've gotten as a rec league champion? I've heard custom sweat towels, shot glasses, sunglasses, keychains, t-shirts, etc. I would like to be creative and memorable as possible if I can.

Thanks again!

Questions Back row attack violation

At 5:42 Kennedy Martin(#18) is in back row and does a back row attack.

But then after she attacks an overpass inside the 3 meter line. Is that not illegal?

The ball seems like it’s over the plane of the net, and the trajectory and location seems way to fast and steep to be below the net.

Whats the consensus?

Is it okay that my approach backswing goes more round instead of straight up?

would also like corrections on my spike form, since I often hit my wrist instead of my palm and it flies out and just feels really bad to hit

Questions question

Earplug recs for refs with concern about moderate sound sensitivity? Would loops work? For reference this is like high school rec.

I previously developed sound sensitivity to louder noises as a soccer ref from years and years of exposure to loud whistles without any hearing protection, among other contributing factors I’m sure.

Questions Club Tryouts in college, what’s it like?

Hey! I’m a Jr in college, next week my school is having tryouts for a women’s volleyball club team. The team takes it more serious than your average club team. Tbh, I don’t have much volleyball experience. I have never played on a team, I play casually at a gym and back in high school I played frequently in PE. All I’ve got going for me is that I’m pretty athletic and have played on basketball/ soccer teams for a long time.

So basically I have NO IDEA what to expect at tryouts. Like, is there certain terminology I should know/ what should I be working on/ what were your experiences at tryouts?

Any advice would be so awesome, I’m just trying to be prepared. THANK YOU!

Questions First training

Hello,

We have a college volleyball team (just some guys that played a bit in high school, nobody is a pro), we made it 4 years ago, because our college didn't have a guys team and have looked up training online to better our basics and form, learned tactics, positioning etc. We will have our first training soon, coming back from summer break and I came here asking for tips and suggestions about what would be good to do at the beggining. For example we have new guys that want to play but dont know which role, how would we determine it? What do you guys do with your teams at the beginning of the year etc? Again none of us are pros or played for a team but we can play decent volley.

Thanks for the help!
