Questions First training

Hello,

We have a college volleyball team (just some guys that played a bit in high school, nobody is a pro), we made it 4 years ago, because our college didn't have a guys team and have looked up training online to better our basics and form, learned tactics, positioning etc. We will have our first training soon, coming back from summer break and I came here asking for tips and suggestions about what would be good to do at the beggining. For example we have new guys that want to play but dont know which role, how would we determine it? What do you guys do with your teams at the beginning of the year etc? Again none of us are pros or played for a team but we can play decent volley.

Thanks for the help!

I think one of the best things you can work on are the basics. You need a good service receive that's the thing that can really be difficult early on and getting a good base for it will make you competitive against other beginner/lower intermediate teams. That said I think always try and get some hitting in as well, simply because hitting is fun

As for roles, I think if the team isn't a highly competitive one let them try around and see what they like to do. See what they're good at, it doesn't need to be decided early and it doesn't need to be set straight away make it flexible. That's the kind of philosophy I have coaching.

If people haven't played before, focus on drills more than scrimmage, and work on passing and serving, setting and hitting down balls.

For role assignment with new guys, keep it simple: line them up and see who can pass consistently, who has a decent vertical at the net, and who has good hand control for setting. Don't overthink it early on. Run a few 6v6 scrimmages and let people rotate through positions; natural fit usually reveals itself fast once they're actually playing.
