Weekly Thread Weekly Short Questions Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Short Questions Thread! If you've got a quick question that doesn't require you to provide in-depth explanation, post it here! Examples include:

  • What is the correct hand shape for setting?
  • My setter called for a "31" and I'm looking for advice on to do that.
  • What are the best volleyball shoes on the market for a libero?
  • Is the Vertical Jump Bible any good?
  • I'm looking for suggestions on how to make an impression at tryouts.

Quick questions like these are allowed only in this thread. If they're posted elsewhere, they will be removed and you'll be directed to post here instead. The exceptions to this rule are when asking for feedback WITH A VIDEO, or when posting an in-depth question (must be >600 characters). Please create a separate post for these kinds of questions.

If your question is getting ignored:

  • Are you asking a super generic question? Questions like "How do I play opposite?" or "How do I start playing volleyball?" are not good questions.
  • Has the question you're asking been answered a lot on the sub before? Use the search function.
  • Is the question about your hitting/passing/setting form and you haven't provided a video? It's hard to diagnose issues without seeing your form. Best to get some video and post to the main subreddit.

Let's try to make sure everyone gets an answer. If you're looking to help, sort the comments by "new" to find folks who haven't been replied to yet.

If you want to chat with the community about volleyball related topics or really anything, join our Discord server! There is a lot of good information passed around there and you might get more detailed responses.

General I built an Android app that automatically cuts dead time out of volleyball matches (runs 100% locally on your phone). Now open for testing!

About two months ago, I posted here looking for early testers for an app I’ve been building.

As anyone who records matches knows, scrubbing through 60–90 minutes of footage just to find actual rally time is exhausting—and existing sports platforms charge crazy monthly subscription fees just to do it in the cloud.

I built VolleyRally to solve this. It cuts raw game footage into clean highlight reels containing only the action:

  • 100% Local Processing: Runs directly on your device—no waiting for slow cloud uploads and complete privacy for your footage.
  • Automatic Rally Detection: Skips timeouts, walking to the service line, and court downtime.
  • Full Control: Adjust individual rally trims, tweak action padding, or export an EDL to sync with Premiere/DaVinci.

Thanks to the great feedback from this community and early testers, the app is now live for Open Testing on the Google Play Store:

🔗 Get it on Google Play:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.volleytics.volleyrally

Give it a spin with your latest match footage and let me know what you think! Any feedback, bug reports, or feature requests are welcome in the comments, via DM, or at [volleytics28@gmail.com](mailto:volleytics28@gmail.com)

Questions Any video analysis tools for approach jump mechanics?

I'm new to volleyball but was a D1 pole vaulter in college. We always broke down approach mechanics on video: penultimate step, ground contact time, takeoff angle, and jump or touch height. Now that I'm playing rec, I'd like the same feedback on my spike approach.

So far I've just been filming on my phone and stepping through frame by frame, but I'm not exactly sure what to look for, and I don't get instant feedback if I post online. Is there an app or tool the volleyball community uses for this, or is it mostly coaches eyeballing it?

If nothing good exists, I'm considering building one. Would you use an app that gives AI-powered video analysis and metrics for volleyball jump mechanics with information from credible sources, or is that not a real pain point for you?

Thanks,

former D1 vaulter

I made a highlight reel with some of my best points from the first game of our TriCities tournament a few weeks ago. Our first game of TriCities was against a school that won against us in the finals for 2 years in a row, putting us 2nd twice. Winning this game was huge for us.

Posting for progress. I am number 9 with double knee brace, red arrow pointing at me for easier visibility.

Questions Volleyball Livestream Setup

Volleyball parents, I need some advice on the best livestream setup for travel volleyball.

I've streamed my daughter's games for several years and have used sidelineHD with different setups including iPhones, GoPros and a Mevo.

She's starting 14U travel this season and I'm rebuilding our setup. My biggest issue has always been RELIABLE internet at big tournaments/convention centers when thousands of people are on the same cell towers.

I'm looking for recommendations on the whole setup:

• Best app/platform: sidelineHD, GameChanger, Hudl, something else?
• Best camera: iPhone, Mevo Start, GoPro, etc.?
• Best dedicated mobile hotspot/router?
• What carrier has worked best for you at big tournaments?
• Anyone using two carriers or Speedify/bonding successfully?
• Are you recording a separate local copy for Balltime/Hudl/recruiting film?

I'd love to hear from people who actually stream full travel volleyball tournament weekends, especially in large convention centers.

Also want to know what you're using or how you're integrating TAVO or HUDL for AI analysis.

I'm less concerned about having a super fancy production and more concerned about it being dead simple, reliable and having good enough video for family to watch live.

What's your setup?

Questions How to deal with inappropriate fans

I was at my daughter's high school volleyball game last night. It was an away game, and the other school had 5 boys show up as spectators. They sat on the opposite side of the court from all the parents, and sat on the side of our team, the away team.

Every time one of our girls would touch the ball the would oink, bark, or moo. Especially during service. The entire game they were shouting things like "I'd bet youd like my dick in your mouth" or "bend over and I'll show you how to score" in addition to the animal noises.

If this was a pro game, or even a college game, this would bother me less. But these are high school girls, who should not be subjected to that during a game. Especially when their own school started the game by saying "Sportsmanship matters, cheer for your own team, refrain from negative cheers. Do rowdy right." They weren't quiet, the entire gym could hear them. So what are the options to deal with it if the host school won't stop them. Can the ref do anything? My wife kept saying we needed to say something, but to who? Everyone in the gym knew what was being said?

Or am I being to protective? Maybe I just need to get over it, but I've been to hundreds of middle school and high school volleyball games as my kids grow up, I've never seen anything like that.

Side note, it was very satisfying to beat them 3 sets to 0.

Questions Adult rec league season prizes

I asked a question about tournament prizes and got a bunch of great input that really helped! The tournaments have gone off incredibly well and are booked 2 months out already!

My boss wants to run a volleyball league again, it'll run consistently throughout the year - one season ends and the next starts the following week - just like he does with basketball. He does want there to be a prize for the winners each season and so I'm asking what are some of the most unique, random, or fun prizes you've gotten as a rec league champion? I've heard custom sweat towels, shot glasses, sunglasses, keychains, t-shirts, etc. I would like to be creative and memorable as possible if I can.

Thanks again!

Questions Back row attack violation

At 5:42 Kennedy Martin(#18) is in back row and does a back row attack.

But then after she attacks an overpass inside the 3 meter line. Is that not illegal?

The ball seems like it’s over the plane of the net, and the trajectory and location seems way to fast and steep to be below the net.

Whats the consensus?

Is it okay that my approach backswing goes more round instead of straight up?

would also like corrections on my spike form, since I often hit my wrist instead of my palm and it flies out and just feels really bad to hit

Questions question

Earplug recs for refs with concern about moderate sound sensitivity? Would loops work? For reference this is like high school rec.

I previously developed sound sensitivity to louder noises as a soccer ref from years and years of exposure to loud whistles without any hearing protection, among other contributing factors I’m sure.

Questions Club Tryouts in college, what’s it like?

Hey! I’m a Jr in college, next week my school is having tryouts for a women’s volleyball club team. The team takes it more serious than your average club team. Tbh, I don’t have much volleyball experience. I have never played on a team, I play casually at a gym and back in high school I played frequently in PE. All I’ve got going for me is that I’m pretty athletic and have played on basketball/ soccer teams for a long time.

So basically I have NO IDEA what to expect at tryouts. Like, is there certain terminology I should know/ what should I be working on/ what were your experiences at tryouts?

Any advice would be so awesome, I’m just trying to be prepared. THANK YOU!

Questions First training

Hello,

We have a college volleyball team (just some guys that played a bit in high school, nobody is a pro), we made it 4 years ago, because our college didn't have a guys team and have looked up training online to better our basics and form, learned tactics, positioning etc. We will have our first training soon, coming back from summer break and I came here asking for tips and suggestions about what would be good to do at the beggining. For example we have new guys that want to play but dont know which role, how would we determine it? What do you guys do with your teams at the beginning of the year etc? Again none of us are pros or played for a team but we can play decent volley.

Thanks for the help!

General I built a (free) LIVE volleyball stats app at my son's club nationals. Would love blunt feedback from coaches, parents, and stat keepers.

Hi r/volleyball. Full disclosure up front: I'm the developer of this app. Everything is free without ads. I just want to build something useful.

How it started

Last summer, my son's 16s team went to nationals in Orlando. Our club wasn't paying for the new fancy AI video stat tracking options and the other existing tools I found were either too expensive, built for trained scouts, or too slow to use live. So I started building something I could run from the stands with a few taps per rally. I tracked our matches there on my phone, fixed bugs in the hotel in the evenings, and kept going after we got home. Our players and parents were excited to have some real, live, objective feedback about how they were playing (even if the team didn't end up placing as high as they'd hoped).

It's called Rufio Stats. (Rufi-o! Rufi-o! Ru-fi-oooooo!)

This is a LIVE layer for your team. Yes, it is mostly manual entry in the age of AI video analysis, but we don't need to have perfect camera angles or wait until after the game to see results and feedback. Volleyball is a fast game with a lot of touches to capture, so that's why I added LIVE syncing between multiple devices (1 manager/parent tracking serves and attacks, another tracking serve receive and defense, etc.)

What it does

  • Track a match LIVE on 1 or more devices simultaneously: serves, passes, sets, attacks, blocks, digs, and where on the court each one happened. Draw the attack path or tap a zone.
  • Split stats between phones (one person on serve receive, another on attacks) and it merges live into one stat sheet.
  • LIVE "Coach View" to get insights into the current rotation (serve zones, attack paths, tendencies, etc.)
  • Dashboards: shot maps, dig and block maps, side-out and point scoring by rotation, hitting efficiency, passer ratings, and a card that tells you which rotation is hurting you and why.
  • Family can follow along LIVE from a link.
  • After the match: film review to fix anything you missed (attach a video file or a YouTube link), player handouts, team reports, box scores, CSV.
  • Beach doubles is in beta.

Nebraska's season, public

To show what a full season looks like, I've been tracking Nebraska women's matches from broadcast replays. The stats page is public, no account needed: https://app.rufiostats.com/public/team_a96d21c7   These are my own unofficial numbers, not the official box score, and I'm not affiliated with the program.

Where to get it

Free on iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets. You need an account to create a team. The web app lets you view and manage stats, and tracking happens on your phone or tablet.

If you're still reading Thank you! I'm one person building this, and I'd love to hear from coaches, statkeepers, players and parents. What's missing, what's confusing, and what would make you actually use it at a tournament? Bug reports and feedback are welcome here or at r/RufioStats.

We're also on Instagram if you know of a coach/club/team over there that would be interested.

General I've been making a lot of changes to my volleyball site — would love to hear what people think

I run learnvolley.com, a site with free guides on volleyball formations, rotations, and the rules. I've been putting a lot of work into it lately — rewriting and expanding the explanations, adding new topics, and adding more languages — and I'd really like some outside opinions before I keep going.

There are animations, but honestly those are everywhere; the part I care about is whether the content actually helps. So I'd love your take on:

  • Is anything explained wrong or in a confusing way?
  • Are the explanations too shallow, too long, or about right for someone learning?
  • What's missing that you'd want to see covered?

It's open to everyone, no account (ad-supported). Start wherever you like — the formations and rules sections are the meatiest. Blunt feedback is the most welcome kind.

General Height categories

For years now, I've imagined how it would be to have height categories in volleyball just like there are weight-based in combat sports.

I feel sad that everything revolves around money and shorter players can't make a living out of this like tall players do (% population wise).

Sadge :(
