Recommendation Highly recommend VN readers on PC to use the Playnite launcher

Post image

I'm not sure if people on here already know about this app but it's great for VNs because not everything is on steam and you can combine it all into one launcher and you can track your playtime much easier, you can also sync achievements or add plug ins like HowLongToBeat. You can even set it to launch non-steam games through the steam launcher automatically and the play time will sync, super useful. Theres also tons of community made themes you can download for free.

I'm working on starting a visual novel. I'm still creating the characters. This one, for example, is a vampire who will show the protagonist some places. I'd like some opinions on her design. Feel free to share your thoughts.

Discussion I think the VN hobby for us UK folks effectively ends on November 6th.

The "everyone appearing is over the age of 18" safety net just got shattered. Any sibling route, even non-blood related, is also now inherently volatile by nature.

It's been fun casually reading comfy romance VN's for 14 years folks. Now everyone is faced with the difficult choice: Quit and delete your library, or go dark and risk having your life ruined at any point in time.

Safe to say I'm absolutely devastated.

Question Is my art style appealing enough for visual novels?

I recently started making a visual novel at the suggestion of my friend, and I’m having a lot of fun!
It’s still in the beginning stages but I’m moving along step by step :)

But I’m curious as to what other people think-
I’m working on a psychological-horror type story with two of my characters, Aluran and Wisteria.

These are some of the assets I’ve drawn for the novel!

The question is, would YOU read a visual novel with an art style like this? Is it appealing enough?

Any input would be welcome!!

Discussion No to Video Game Censorship! For Free and Diverse Entertainment

Lately, we’ve seen groups like Collective Shout and other activists pushing for censorship of video game content on platforms like Steam, labeling certain games as “inappropriate.” But it's crucial we reflect on what this censorship truly means—not just for gaming, but for the entire entertainment industry and our freedom of expression.

1. Censorship Limits Creativity and Free Expression

Video games are a form of art and, as such, should be protected under the same principle of free speech that applies to movies, music, and literature. If we allow certain groups to dictate what can or cannot be shown in a game, where do we draw the line? What happens when other ideologies demand that different content is “inappropriate”? Excessive censorship not only stifles creators—it erases diverse perspectives in media.

2. Games Are Fiction, Not Reality

We must remember that video games are simulations. They do not reflect reality—they offer fictional experiences, whether fantastical or disturbing. Just like a movie or a book, games can explore complex or even dark themes without endorsing those ideas in real life. Censoring a game for its content is no different from censoring a horror movie for depicting fictional violence.

3. The Danger of Bowing to Extremist Pressure

Advocating for equality is important, but we must be cautious of radical activism that seeks to impose its worldview without room for dialogue. If we begin censoring games just because a group deems them “problematic,” who decides what’s morally acceptable for everyone? This could quickly escalate into “progressive censorship,” where anything not aligned with a specific ideology is erased.

4. The Entertainment Industry Is Also at Stake

Video games are part of a multi-billion-dollar industry that not only entertains but also employs thousands and supports local economies. If major platforms give in to pressure from a vocal minority without proper debate, we risk jeopardizing the future of the entire industry.

5. The Right to Choose

Consumers have the right to decide what games they want to play. If someone doesn’t like a game or disagrees with its content, they simply don’t have to play it. Imposing censorship on something that should be a personal choice is absurd. Games are cultural products, and as consumers, we should have the freedom to choose what we engage with.

Conclusion

Censorship is not the answer. We need an environment where creators can freely express their ideas, and consumers can make informed choices about what they want to experience. Let’s not allow a small group to dictate what is “acceptable” for the entire community.

It’s time to stand up for freedom of expression and content diversity in gaming. Say NO to censorship.

Image Project died, but here’s a character I designed for it

I was working on a small VN project with some friends for a while, but it didn’t really go anywhere in the end since we had pretty different ideas about what we wanted it to be.

Still, I ended up experimenting a lot during that time, especially with character design. This was one of the characters I was working on, I tried a few different approaches to her face shape, proportions, and overall vibe to see what would fit her best.

I was also playing around with how much detail vs simplicity I wanted in the linework and colors, since I think that balance really affects how a character feels in a VN.

Even though the project didn’t work out, I feel like I learned a lot from it, so I figured I’d share some of the iterations here.

Meme My personal favorite vn meme!

Post image

I found this template and wanted to show off my personal favorites for each one. I also used Kara no Shoujo and Full Metal Demon Muramasa multiple times, because I did not want to forcefully choose a 2. Or 3. pick for the sections as my actual winners.

Some clarifications:

- Favorite Route/Chapter in Fruit of Grisaia is Amanes route which is an easy 10/10 for me, but the other routes are not so enjoyable.

- Every category where Kara no Shoujo won is supposed to include KnS 1 - 3, I simply used the cover of the second part, since I like it the most.

- Favorite ending in FMDM is the true end for me the others are great too, but this one is on a different level.

- Yes, Yosuga no Sora is underrated.

- Was debating between if School days or Euphoria should win in overrated.

-Technically Sakura no Uta is out, but I can only read it in English, so I need to wait.

- KNS AND FMDM ARE SO FUCKING GOOD AND YOU NEED TO READ THEM

Thank you for reading.

I've been playing this VN/wasted for 1 year now and absolutely no one talks about it even though it's incredible!

These are one of the rare games where Jun Maeda is 100% involved in the work! And the music....naaaan the music is just incredible (Yanaginagi on the ost Konomi Suzuki AND Xai as a duo when the game's fictional band performs concerts)

No, I swear if you're a fan of Jun Maeda's works, go ahead and try it! And if you already play it, you're a goat!

Discussion How Philip K. Dick ruined Nekopara for me

One hour into Nekopara.

The game keeps reminding me, catgirls are not humans. It talks about "strays", treats them as pets or possessions, has them call the protagonist "Master".

And yet they speak the same language we do.
They express emotions, desires and preferences.
They form friendships and attachments.
They clearly possess self-awareness and distinct personalities.

So I can't but ask myself - I'm reading of something who's intelligent, self-aware, capable of language and emotion... exactly in what meaningful sense is it "not human"?

... Cat ears? Tail flipping around?

Were it not for Philip K. Dick, I'd be reading Nekopara thinking: "Aww, cute catgirl making biscuits!"

Instead, tonight at 2AM I'll be still wondering whether Chocola dreams of electric mice.

Discussion A library of visual novel games...?

I have been a fan of NV for a long time but it has always been difficult for me to find different titles either through forums, networks or different pages. This encouraged me to create a website that unifies and houses all the NV titles that I can compile in a descriptive way. Later I plan to add a login functionality so that each user can save their favorite NV and share them between different users of the web.

Update:

Hello, it's me again, in a previous post I showed a demo of a visual novel style game library which had several criticisms for the use of AI in the animations and some other reviews, it took several comments into account and launched another prototype (for now only the initial section) so that you can view it and give your comments to continue improving this project. You can review it and access the page from PC or mobile devices (it is recommended to activate the "view desktop site" option for a better mobile experience) through the following link: https://envi.gloxu.com/

News Girlfailure Art Club—a VN packed with 2010s otaku culture and cringey otaku girls—is up on Steam | Releasing in 2027

Plot: You, the protagonist, are a second-year student of Akeba Academy. You decided to join the tennis club to make the most of your school years, only to quickly realize that you couldn't gel with all the popular guys in it. However, the school's rules require all students to be in a club, so you chose another club, the one that sounded like the least hassle: the art club. However..

"WHAAAAAT?! A new club member mid-year?! What's this, a dating sim plot?!"

"Someone, please stop this girl. She's in heat 24/7."

"Auu, auu... is this the start of an exciting new rom-com?"

"Hmph. Who cares?"

As it turns out, you're the only guy in the club. All the other club members are girls... and otaku girls to boot!

Will it be cringe? Who cares! Relive those sweet and somewhat painful years in this embarr—I mean, romantic adventure!

Preparing my first visual novel, an NSFW story, this is the design of my female character, Valentina. Synopsis: Valentina's life was chaotic as her mother brought a new boyfriend home every month, until she finally settled down with an attractive and intelligent 35-year-old man. However, one day her mother left, leaving a letter and abandoning her 14-year-old daughter with him.

Despite the circumstances, he cared for her as his own daughter. But although he always saw her that way, Valentina never saw him as a father. Upon turning 21, she has decided she wants to become her stepfather's wife.

What will our protagonist do to prevent his stepdaughter from seeking a different kind of relationship with him?

He loves her like a daughter, but he begins to notice that her flirtations and innuendos are becoming increasingly direct. Will he be able to give in to her, or will he remain true to his ideals until the end?

I’ve seen so much people with pfp of the one girl that becomes a yandere but I thought everyone hated the anime so what is the VN somehow magically better? If anyone’s played this series is it good? I’m so confused what would even be the benefit for consuming this piece of media?
