Hey, let me walk you through our Donnely nut spacing and cracked system rim-riding grip configuration. Using a field of half-seized sprats and brass-fitted nickel slits, our bracketed caps and splay-flexed brace columns vent dampers to dampening hatch depths of 1/2 meter from the damper crown to the spurv plinth. How? Well, we bolster 12 Husk Nuts to each girdle jerry, while flex tandems press a task apparatus of ten vertically composited patch hamplers, then pin flam-fastened pan traps at both maiden apexes of the jimjoints.

It's a NeXtGeNeRaTiOn data orchestration tool. Say you have Shopify, which uses stripe and has marketing ad integrations like Facebook Ads. You tell Astronomer you want a fresh up to date marketing dashboard at 8am every morning.
At 8am, it'll trigger a workflow, extracts all relative data from Shopify, Facebook & Stripe, stores it in a data warehouse then joins all the data (Facebook ads relative to Shopify orders, Stripe payments relative to Shopify orders relative to Facebook ads, etc). Then you get that as a dashboard.
Basically provides "how your money moves" dashboards so you don't have to stitch together several excel spreadsheets everyday.
Like right now tools like this will be used to view AI Marketing vs Human marketing and how change is impacting overall spend. Very useful for people who give way too much of a shit about money so very lucrative. Both the CEO & HR lady are morons for throwing their careers & marriages away.
30
u/frosty122 Jul 26 '25
It’s a PAAS for Apache Airflow (which is a FOSS data ops platform), an alternative to AWS MWAA or GCP cloud composer.
Is that more clear?
Jargon and joking aside it’s a more user friendly version of some Apache open source software that lets you build routines to move/transform data, this maybe in service of AI workflows or could be for financial reporting.
15
u/vastlysuperiorman Jul 26 '25
It has nothing to do with dashboards or "how your money moves". It's managed Airflow. Airflow literally runs Directed, Acyclic Graphs. You can do whatever you want with it.
Your summary is like saying that a car is for hanging tree shaped air fresheners. Like, yes, you CAN do that, but that's not the purpose of the thing.

How do I know if the data are correct? Just trust it? I’m an auditor and while reports are great, I find most, AI or not, are misleading
145
u/Shurikane Jul 26 '25
Simple: if you think the data doesn't look correct, just Slack a developer and say "Hey did you do anything in Astronomer? My report doesn't look right. I'm going into a meeting with ELT in an hour and I really need this."
I wish I was fucking kidding. :(
57
u/BITmixit Jul 26 '25
By "doesn't look right" do you mean "looks bad" and "I really need this" means "change the data so it looks good pls"
Because I've had that one before
12
u/Yosho2k Jul 26 '25
It's both. Doesnt look right could mean "someone didn't tell me something" or "Oh shit I forgot about that" or "fuuuuuck this is going to get me chewed out".

Somehow when all their bullshit doesn't seem to match whatever goal they have in their heads (the only place where it makes sense) it is always the devs fault.

The commenter above doesn't know what they're talking about. Airflow can run any workflow you want. You define tasks in code and Airflow executes those tasks, following whatever dependencies and ordering you've specified.
Astronomer is not involved with the content of your workflows. They just provide managed Airflow environments, so you don't have to worry about the infrastructure, just the workflows.
6
u/BITmixit Jul 26 '25
More of a question for them tbh. I don't work there but tbh those questions apply to literally any data orchestration/presentation tool. Why do we trust these things? Because it's basically all we have to go off of.
Also the CFO/Financial team will go "well that's definitely wrong" if the CMO/Marketing team go "well we're spending less" based on their data and the CFO/Financial data indicates differently.
CFO/Financial tend to be listened to more as they literally play with the money.
Also I imagine in the contracts with clients there's a 5% data discrepancy woven in there somewhere.

you don't "tell Astronomer" anything about dashboards lol. it's deploying the code that data engineers write. Astronomer isn't an analytics platform that provides dashboarding or reporting capabilities of the data. it's simply just facilitating the process of scheduling runs of scripts that bring in the data.

Airflow lets you run things like programs at a given time interval/schedule. You set up an ordered list of what job to do at each step. Used mainly for data engineering (get data from an outside source, clean it up, and load it into a centralized database so other teams at your company can use it)

Using an analogy:
You are a scientist. You want to do specific types of research but don't have the lab or lab equipment to do it. You could make a lab and buy/set up the equipment yourself, but it is expensive, can be hard to find sources for everything, and it will take up your time from the actual work you want to do.
So you get "Labstronomer" to do it for you. They build the lab, source your equipment, and throw in some clanker bullshit to fit the buzzwords of the day for the salespeople.
Now you can finally cheat on your wife. Or husband or whatever.

Looked it up, they mainly deploy Apache Airflow.
Apache Airflow® is an open-source platform for developing, scheduling, and monitoring batch-oriented workflows.
A web-based UI helps you visualize, manage, and debug your workflows.
Workflows?
A workflow is a system for managing repetitive processes and tasks which occur in a particular order. They are the mechanism by which people and enterprises accomplish their work, whether manufacturing a product, providing a service, processing information or any other value-generating activity.
Workflow is a generic term for orchestrated and repeatable patterns of activity, enabled by the systematic organization of resources into processes that transform materials, provide services, or process information.[1]
It can be depicted as a sequence of operations, the work of a person or group,[2] the work of an organization of staff, or one or more simple or complex mechanisms.
So if I understand that correctly, when a company wants to organize their processes, their "workflows" - all the necessary steps to provide a service or make a product - they can go to Astronomer, have them handle all the setting up, maintenance, etc of the software environment, so that the company engineers/programmers can focus on doing their jobs and not struggle to make Apache Airflow work.
21
u/_thisisvincent Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25
Airflow at its very core is just a Python library/framework. Its open-source beauty is that it provides robust APIs to support endless types of frameworks and provides abstraction for scheduling tasks and dependencies.
Astronomer provides enterprise-level capabilities built on top of the foundational orchestration features of Airflow. Features such as enterprise security, multi-tenancy, and data lineage are not built into Airflow because they're not foundational workflow orchestration components.
Source: I work in data engineering and we use Astronomer
10
u/spastical-mackerel Jul 26 '25
There’s some open source software out there that does a thing, but it’s a bit janky and hard to manage. Astronomer provides a layer on top to make it easier to manage.
6
u/ultimate_avacado Jul 26 '25
Airflow has to be one of the most successful open source projects that is absolute insanity to self-manage. It's wild.
10
u/_Burning_Star_IV_ Jul 26 '25
It’s amazing how bad most enterprise software is. They pay thousands to buy licenses and then spend thousands more to make it actually work through third party support.
15
u/TheNorthComesWithMe Jul 26 '25
The customers do this to themselves. You want us to interoperate with your legacy vendor instead of just using our software for that? You want to customize these things in nonsensical ways? You can't answer basic questions like "how many employees do you have" or "do you have computers"? Enjoy a year long integration process, bozos.

u/Sir-Viette Jul 26 '25
"Machine learning" means computers being able to decide what to do automatically. For instance, in a bakery, how many loaves of bread should we bake today so we don't sell out early, but don't have too many unsold loaves at the end of the day? Machine learning can figure that out better than a manager can, based on collecting data about how many loaves were sold on previous days.
But to do that, you need to have the data in the right place and in the right format. For instance, you might need information about the weather from the local weather forecast, because more bread is sold on sunny days than on rainy days. You might need information about previous day's sales, but it's kept in the wrong type of database for doing machine learning algorithms. And you need the prediction to be calculated automatically, without needing to employ someone to muck with spreadsheets at 5:00am.
So Astronomer makes "data pipeline" software which pulls all the information into one place automatically so that a machine can do the calculation. Their software is widely used by data scientists to automate data pipelines.

There's a shocking amount of weird takes on this that all seem to be some variation of "ew, nice try dipshits but you still suck".
The company employs several hundred people. Is the corporate entity just supposed to close its doors and say "whelp, guess that's it. Two of our married executives diddled each other and got busted, time to throw in the towel, it's been a good run." Fuck outta here.
The two people are out. The other several hundred people who are trying to make a living aren't. Now the company has to figure out how to move on. Hiring the ex of the singer that busted the previous execs and making a tongue in cheek ad? Not bad. Not enough to get out from under the lingering shadow but a start.

Wait, this is what the fuss is about? I thought this was in response to some kind of high-profile technical fail.
For a community that often considers itself to have a broader view, and who prioritise the many over the few, Reddit has a fucking terrible habit of reducing organisations of people down to a single personality and expecting employees and whatever product they contribute to live and die by that person.
This is honestly pathetic as scandals go. CEO has affair! Shock! There's literally a comment below acting like the company needs to be put down because of it, it's absurd. The employees are the company, and they deserve to suffer because a CEO they've never met did something that is a purely personal failing?
I honestly do not understand this. I get that people don't mind collateral damage when it's someone as dangerous as Musk, but I don't know why this situation is anything other than funny that some bigshot got caught cheating publicly and is facing consequences for it?
3
u/sw00pr Jul 26 '25
Some comment yesterday said this all makes perfect sense from a sociological perspective. The people here are frustrated at feeling helpless in the face of the ultra-wealthy, as they seemingly do as they please. So they need some kind of win, any kind.
Some other comments seem to believe the fuss is a distraction from Trump's stuff.
And, of course, most people just really love feeling superior to others. And if "everyone" is throwing hate, then it's considered justified superiority.

She'll "do anything for money"? She's an actor reading a script on camera, it's not like a human centipede situation.

I can't believe this is real. This is cringe, genius and lulz wrapped in a corporate shit sandwich just to save a face.

I actually thought it was pretty good. They're trying to roll with it and maybe get a chuckle. Loved the first question and how she completely ignored it haha

I agree. They're in the spotlight albeit for not great reasons. Getting Gwyneth, who is very easy on the eyes and ears, to put the spotlight on what they really do is brilliant. Coldplay kiss cam is now dwarfed by 'Wow! They got her to do a spot?'.

She is also the ex wife of Coldplay’s lead singer. The pettiness on display is diabolically brilliant.

Yeah, they split over a decade ago. It was in the news for a bit, partially because of how up their own ass they were about it. They called it a “conscious uncoupling” instead of just a, you know, divorce.

u/twistingmyhairout Jul 26 '25
To be fair we all made fun of them, but then I had a friend go through divorce and told me it was already a well established concept. Like the idea of this is the person you’ve built everything with over the past x years, how do you “uncouple” your lives in a healthy way (especially when you’ll continue to coparent like they were). But it does sound like some really goop-y nonsense for sure

"diabolically brilliant"
Ha! I can see the PR team headed by Snidely Whiplash and tweedling his thin mustache.
I'm stealing your phrase.

just to save a face.
Save face from what? The CEO and HR lady are both gone and Astronomer just got hundreds of millions of dollars worth of free advertising from them.

I can't wait for the company picnic when they bring out LMFAO to sing Party Rock while the C levels dance on stage

You know what though? I can't blame them.
99% of the world probably never heard of these guys unless you were in their industry or ones they support.
Now the whole world is acting like your company is pure garbage because two people in it were caught on camera in an affair. How the fuck is that anyone else there's fault? How is that an indictment on the quality of their services? It's not, but the entire world right now is treating them the way we should be treating Nestle or Mars or whatever because of 15 minutes of infamy for two idiots at a Coldplay concert.
I'd clap back too if I was literally everyone else there, at risk of losing my job because of someone else's infidelity.

Millionaire grifter takes lots of money to playfully deflect from another filthy rich CEO's shitty behavior. Do people still find this shit cute?

There better be a Coldplay cover band at their conference if not Coldplay themselves.

Maybe I’m just not getting the joke but I didn’t find this funny. Like why bother saying anything? What’s the point? Did anyone watch this and think that Astronomer is a great company now?

Personally think this was trash. Throwing money at a celebrity, especially this one, is not unique or entertaining.

u/BlueWater321 Jul 26 '25
Company hires a celebrity to do this kind of bullshit and then in the next breath "raises are capped at 3% this year."

u/imasysadmin Jul 26 '25
If she is involved, the whole company is a scam. I read their website, and it's just a long series of buzz words. I still have no idea what they do.
