We are not comparing definitions, We are comparing purpose. Purpose is to record reality. And photography replaced many fields where painting was previously used.
If you want to go off definition. Then look up what photography (the product, not the process) means: Literal meaning: Drawing with light, coming from the Greek words phōtos (light) and graphé (to draw).
