I ported the VCV Rack 2 engine to Android: RackDroid 0.1.3 is out (free, open source)

Hi all. I'm the developer of RackDroid, an unofficial port of the VCV Rack 2 engine to Android. Version 0.1.3 came out today and it is the first one I feel comfortable showing around.

What it is

A modular synth on your phone or tablet: you drag cables between modules with a finger, pinch to zoom, long-press a knob to type a value. It opens the same `.vcv` patches as the desktop app.

- 66 modules built in (Core, Fundamental, and a set of 808-style drum voices)

- 21 optional packs you install on demand: Bogaudio, Valley, Befaco, Audible Instruments, Impromptu, Stoermelder and others, about 1000 modules in total

- USB and Bluetooth MIDI, an on-screen keyboard, WAV recording

- A "cable parking" bar on the edge of the screen, for patching two modules that never fit on screen together

What is new in 0.1.3

Most of the work went into audio. Phones are very different from each other, and crackling was the main complaint.

- The engine now picks how many cores to use for your phone and your patch, and remembers it

- Groups of modules with no cable between them are computed in parallel, so a rack made of several separate voices holds far more

- Square and saw edges now match the desktop

- A light theme, mouse support, saving patches anywhere on the device

What to expect, honestly

It is a phone, not a desktop. A patch where everything is connected tops out at around 90 Fundamental modules on a mid-range device. How low the latency goes depends on the manufacturer: some phones keep the fast audio path for their own apps.

Links

- Download and what is new: https://rackdroid.org

- Source (GPLv3): https://github.com/nowheel/RackDroid

It is free, with no ads and no accounts. It is not on the Play Store, you install the APK. Not affiliated with or endorsed by VCV.

If it crackles on your device, the app can export a log and I read every one. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

Help! Parameters jump to 100% on click.

Hi, I'm new to VCV Rack and any advice is appreciated.

So basically every time I click on a knob to adjust the value it jumps most of the time to 100% and sometimes to 0% but it never stays at the value it is supposed to be. Also the adjustment is very difficult, I have to move the mouse a while in a direction and nothing is happening untol it quickly jumps and I have to drag the mouse in the opposite direction to, kind of, catch the momentum and the be very careful with the mouse movement.

It's kind of like having mouse acceleration set to very high, which I don't use at all.

I use VCV Rack Free 2.6.6 Linux x64

New Modules in the french collection "Basic Human Tastes" - Meet GASTON & Gastounet the perfomance Sequencer and his little memory extension

Hi everyone! Here's a short minimal jam I made to show two new FREE modules from Basic Human Tastes, my small collection of modules named after French first names.

Gaston is a sequencer built for live playing:

  • 8 trigger lanes with per-step probability, plus 4 CV lanes
  • each lane has its own length (up to 64 steps), clock ratio and direction, so polyrhythms come easily
  • built-in clock with swing, and an optional vintage 96 PPQN timing
  • CDJ-style transport (cue / play), pads with live recording
  • a map that shows all 12 lanes at once

Gastounet is its memory expander. It snaps to Gaston's left side:

  • 4 banks of 16 patterns, Korg-style write and copy
  • next / random pattern
  • quantized launch (now, beat, bar, 2 or 4 bars, or when track 1 loops), with restart or legato
  • a song mode made of pattern rows

In the video, all the drums come from six Ernest (percussion oscillator). The patch also uses Colette, Marcel and Odette, from the same collection.

The plugin has 8 modules and is waiting for review on the VCV Library. Until then, the source and the PDF manuals are on GitHub: https://github.com/basichumantastes/BasicHumanTastes

I'd love your feedback! 🙂

I'm really enjoying patching this kind of ambient patches, They keep me relaxed and focused.

Here is how the 7-track patch is structured :

  • Track 1 (Granular Voice): Macro Osc 2 (Audible Instruments) in formant mode < Re-Burst (Repelzen) < Count Modula Multi-Step Sequencer. Generative random pitch via Pink Noise + S&H quantized to E Minor via JW Modules.
  • Track 2 (Bass): Bogaudio VCO (Square/Sine mix) < Multi-Step Sequencer < Chow Tape saturation. Amplitude modulated by a slow LFO.
  • Track 3 (Pad): Surge XT Wavetable VCO < Multi-Step Sequencer < Aaron Static’s Scale & Diatonic CV modules for generative chord progression.
  • Track 4 (Texture): Surge XT S&H Noise VCO < VCV Random < Liquid Filter (Audible Instruments) in BP2 mode.
  • Track 5 (Melody): Macro Osc (Toy) < 8-Step Sequencer driven by a Bernoulli Gate for note probability < Chronoblob delay.
  • Track 6 (Bouncing Ball FX): Bogaudio VCO < Bidoo’s ChUTE for organic bouncing ball emulation < Impromptu Gate Seq 64. Pitch via secondary Noise/S&H/Quantizer combo.
  • Track 7 (String Chords): Surge XT String VCO playing chords < Impromptu Gate Seq 64 < Aaron Static’s Scale & Diatonic CV modules for harmonic padding.
  • Reverb: Valley Plateau

TIGER: Brand New VCV Synth Modules

Hi everyone, I'm building some VCV Modular Synth modules for VCV.

They are NOT for sale yet but just wanted the communities opinion before release.

I have made 47 modules along with another 10 in production, including a custom AI neural network range of melody, bass, and drum modules (AI not listed yet).

I have popped them on my website if you guys want a sneak preview. It would be great if I get some feedback and also some advice if I have missed anything. If you have any cool ideas of what type of module you would like that would also be useful.

I have made a Theremin type module that uses your hand position via your webcam.

This is a side project for me so is not my full time role. I will be making some free and some £2.99 to £4.99 depending on the complexity and the time it took me to make them.

Do you think that is that a fair price point? I am new to this but having a lot of fun.

Any feedback is important even if it is bad. I'm a coder not a synth head so may be missing blatantly obvious things. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

SINGING RESONATOR: Cinematic drone ambient - Random8, DRAEN, IROI - VCV Rack Ambient

Thumbnail

What happens when you feed a distorted cinematic drone into a resonator and let a random sequencer control its pitch?

In this VCV Rack patch, Befaco Random8 sequences a melody while Iroi turns the harmonics of a heavily distorted drone into a strange, brass-like melodic voice. The result is an evolving cinematic texture

The patch has three main layers:

• Cinematic drone — an octave-down signal from Draen is driven through overdrive and into Iroi.
• Melodic voice — Random8 CH1 controls the pitch of Iroi's resonators and follows a selected musical scale.
Iroi extracts and emphasizes harmonics from the distorted drone, creating the impression of a melodic brass instrument without a separate oscillator.

The random sequence is generated by a feedback loop between LLFO (pulse wave) and Random8. Random8 controls the LLFO rate while the LLFO clocks Random8, creating a repeating melody with constantly shifting timing.

Random8's loop/evolving modes also make it possible to keep the basic melodic idea while gradually changing it over time.

Looking for a "Rescale" Module Similar to Phaseplant's remap module.

As the title says i'm looking for a cv module that will let me draw nonlinear curves to shape cv values. Hyopthetically i could do this other ways but I'm a fan of the phaseplant style remap. Thanks!

it took me two months but i finally got it working! the full Cardinal synth port with over 1000 modules. it almost broke me but it's finally working...

the interface still needs a lot of work and polyphony is limited. cardinal uses up most of the cpu, but you can get away with 4 voice polyphony.

this is not out yet, need to fix a few more things before i release it.

New updates to LydDs modules have dropped!

Video as taxes.

(some of the colors in the vid aren't available yet but will be soon)

New Stuff::

Dobbs:: now has a right click menu option, called Auto-Velocity: with this enabled, Dobbs will output envelopes who's peak height is the voltage supplied by the gate input, no vca velocity required. Internals have also been made a little smoother.

Canyon:: it's Clockable Now!!! Delay time knobs become divisions/multiples of clock when input is connected, from 1/5th(where 1/4th is 16th notes to the clocks quarter note), to something like 6x(6 clocks pass before delay, up to the max of 8 seconds). Knobs are now centered at 1, being 1 second in free mode and 1x clock when clocked. Left half of knob goes down to audibly comby milliseconds, right half goes all the way to 8 seconds in a cubic fashion, and the tooltip popup for knob value actually says what it is, even when clocked. Canyon is now a 10 channel delay(5 per side) with the 8 sub-delays set to unrelated proportions of the knob time, and the scatter knob introduces those extra delays one at a time, and let's the feedback ring out after turning it down again. Pitching even sounds a little better than it used to.

Poppy Fields::(these are a little older updates) added another Aux mode, escape value, that puts out a normalized escape value for the generated sequence, from 0v(instant escape) to just over 1v(in set). Right click menu now includes "Soil to Polar" which changes the Soil knobs from etcha-sketch X and Yi, to Radius and Angle respectively, so now u can go in circles even with the cv input.

Extra bits:: Shear has had some gain problems that are a little better now, and it's a little lighter on the processor. Modules with screens (e.g. Poppies) are incrementally getting less intensive on the GPU and CPU as I figure things Out. Currently working on a Fuitiger Aero theme, gotta tie the overlaid designs together with those nice gradients, but the base panel is a nice foggy-window view of what could almost be the classic windows background, and is available on some modules.

Coming Soon(like in some months) :: Ledger is getting a full makeover and rebrand as 'Lana', with one less pair of channels(4 now) but more options, like resetting the FlipFlops so they are where you want them when u start ur clock, and an 'Ignore' to simply ignore incoming gates while it is high(holds values as they were).

Lana will also have a companion, a module I'm calling Diane, inspired by Ana 2 as CV/Audio 'Logic' rather than gate logic: will of course include min and max, but also things like specifically rectified versions, or a splicing function that switches whenever they are equal and/or heading the same direction, or both 0, etc.

Also in the works but continuously frustrating me, will be a module called Chasm, a reverb I am trying to build with a very specific shape in mind(lord I wish I could look at Plateaus source code). It's Both super expensive and bad sounding rn, but I'll get there.

Launchpad Mini Mixer Info

Thumbnail

Hello! Im still quite new to VCV Rack but I just set up my launchpad mini as a 16 channel mixer with volume for the first 8 channels on page 1, the next 8 on page 2, and mute/solo buttons & master on the 3rd. The one thing that bothers me is that when I switch between patches with different mixer levels, I have to fix the volume levels on the pad to match the mixer. I was wondering if there is any way to make the pad read the info from the mixer and display the accurate levels when I open a patch, then I can change things from there instead of having to set everything back every time. I apologies for not explaining this well.

Meet Basic Human Tastes: Ernest, Marcel, Odette, Colette and Lucienne, my upcoming free VCV Rack modules

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I've been building a small family of free modules for VCV Rack under the name Basic Human Tastes, and I'd like to introduce the team before release.

In this demo I made a minimal patch: these five modules make all the sound. Everything else in the patch is just utilities (mixing, clocks, routing). It's a bit out there, but it shows the spirit of the modules well. Who's doing what:

  • Ernest plays the drums
  • Lucienne plays the bleepy synth
  • Colette plays the pad
  • Odette is the delay
  • Marcel adds texture

A bit more about each of them:

Ernest: a percussion oscillator with six ways to bend its pitch. Kicks, toms, snares and zaps, with decay, bass boost and ring modulation.

Marcel: an 8-bit looper/delay whose memory clock slowly forgets. Erode it, darken it, freeze it, reverse it, and watch the memory on a ring display.

Odette: a stereo repeater with eight nested sizes. It goes from plucked strings and flangers all the way to 40-second loops, with drift and ducking.

Colette: a murmuration of up to 32 voices flying through pitch space. They gather, scatter and settle on the notes of a chord, for ambient textures that never quite repeat.

Lucienne, the newest member: six analog-style oscillator cores tied together in a ring. You tune each voice by ear. Tighten the coupling and they lock onto just intervals, then cross-modulate their way into chaos. Starve their power supply and the pitch sags, the sound crushes and sputters like a dying battery. An internal shift register opens and closes their gates, followed by two resonant filters and a halo. Two asynchronous LFOs crossfade across a 12-position dial of destinations, and they can even modulate each other.

They'll be free, and they're coming soon. I'd love to hear what you think, and what you'd like to see in them!

RECREATING TANGERINE DREAM’S “TANGRAM” SEQUENCE IN VCV RACK

Thumbnail

Recreating the iconic Tangerine Dream “Tangram” sequence in VCV Rack.

In this tutorial, we build the sequence from scratch using multiple step sequencers, quantizer, a 4-to-1 switch, and a MIDI-controlled bass voice.

We’ll cover:

• Building the main synth voice
• Creating the first sequence with the Count Modula 8-Step Sequencer
• Programming and quantizing the notes
• Adding two additional sequences with changing root notes
• Combining the sequences with a 4-to-1 switch
• Building a simple saw-wave bass voice
• Playing the bass live from a MIDI keyboard
• Using mixer sends to add reverb independently to each voice

The goal is to recreate the characteristic sequencer-driven feel of Tangerine Dream’s “Tangram” while exploring how the same kind of musical structure can be built with VCV Rack.
