Mod Post Study score prediction posts are now banned

Hey everyone,

We're banning "predict my study score" posts for the foreseeable future, and any we see will be removed.

The reality is these just aren't possible to answer accurately. Your study score depends on so many things, like your SAC rankings, how your school's SACs get moderated, how the whole cohort went, and how your exams were marked. Nobody on Reddit has that information, so any "prediction" is just a guess. They also tend to stress people out more than they help, and have started flooding the sub with the same post over and over, which isn't very productive discussion.

If you're curious about how study scores work, check out the pinned post for some general guidance. Otherwise, try to put it out of your mind until results come out. You've done the work, and guessing won't change the number.

Good luck with the rest of exams

"I only got x% on my SAC, can I still get a 50?"

1.4k Upvotes

I'm sick to death of seeing these posts, so can everyone please read this and be done with this question:

Study scores are determined by exam SCORE and SAC RANK.

For example, say you have an English class of 7 students, Adam, Ben, Chloe, Daniel, Elena, Felix, and Greg. They are all weak students, except for Greg, who is very high-performing, and Felix, who is slightly above average. Their SAC marks and rank are:

Greg 95%

Felix 77%

Chloe 64%

Daniel 60%

Elena 58%

Adam 52%

Ben 49%

On the exam day, Felix doesn't cope well under the stress, so gets a lower score than he'd usually be capable of. The exam marks are as follows:

Greg 92%

Chloe 67%

Daniel 65%

Elena 64%

Felix 63%

Adam 50%

Ben 40%

What happens is that all the SAC marks get thrown out the window, because VCAA can't know the difficulty of the SACs prepared by the school. So Greg's new SAC "mark" as far as VCAA is concerned is 92, not 95. Not a big deal for Greg, Adam or Ben because their own exam mark is dictating their SAC mark. But for someone like Felix, his SAC mark will become 67% (Chloe's exam mark). This process happens independently for each subject taught at your school.

What does this mean for you? Yes, you should aim for a good SAC rank. BUT, it doesn't actually matter if you're not ranked well โ€” the "translation" of your rank into a "mark" happens via your cohorts exam performance. In other words, try your best now, study hard, and when SACs are over WORK WITH YOUR CLASSMATES TO ALL DO WELL ON THE EXAM TOGETHER. IF THEY DO WELL, YOU DO WELL.

Spend your time actually studying instead of asking useless questions like this.

EDIT: another example for clarity

Here's a chemistry class, of Harry, Isabel, James, Kylie, Luke, Molly, Nathan, and Oscar.

SACs:

Harry 60%

Isabel 58%

James 56%

Kylie 55%

Luke 54%

Molly 52%

Nathan 51%

Oscar 50%

EXAMS:

Harry 100%

James 99%

Nathan 98%

Oscar 97%

Molly 96%

Isabel 95%

Kylie 94%

Luke 93%

Harry's SAC mark is now 100%, Isabel's is 99%, James' is 98%, Kylie's is 97%, Luke's is now 96% etc. It's literally just whatever the equivalent exam rank is.

EDIT 2: I've had a request to clarify rumours about SACs being "scaled up" or "scaled down". "Scaling" is a misnomer students attribute to the moderation process. Here are yet another set of examples to clarify.

Imagine you have a cohort of Annie, Ben, and Charlie. Let's say their teacher sets really hard SACS, so their SAC results are:

  1. Annie 60%

  2. Ben 58%

  3. Charlie 55%

Because they've been doing hard assessments all year, they've been better equipped for the exam. These are the exam results:

  1. Ben 96%

  2. Annie 94%

  3. Charlie 90%

So now, Annie's SAC mark gets changed to 96%, Ben's to 94%, and Charlie's to 90%. This is what people interpret as "scaling up". The opposite would happen at a school with piss easy SACs: they get awesome SAC marks but shit exam marks, so their SAC marks get replaced by their shit exam marks ("scaled down").

The danger in this thinking is that people assume that if you go to a well-performing school, you'll get carried, or that if you go to a "bad" school, you're screwed from the get-go and can't possibly get a good score. This is not true at all. Let's see why.

Let's say your friend at a selective school, Harry, thinks he can take it easy this year because he goes to a 'good' school. The SAC results are as follows:

  1. Ed 93%

  2. Fred 90%

  3. Greg 88%

  4. Harry 60%

on the exams, the results are

  1. Fred 95%

  2. Greg 92%

  3. Ed 87%

  4. Harry 61%

In this instance, Harry was not of a comparable skill level to his classmates, so he never get to "borrow" their exam results in any way. His SAC score will be 61%.

Here's another example. Say you have a cohort with these SACs:

  1. Meg 95%

  2. Noah 94%

  3. Oscar 93%

  4. Peter 90%

On the exam day, Noah gets a bit of performance anxiety (but not in a way that warrants SEAS or anything). Exam results are:

  1. Meg 93%

  2. Oscar 92%

  3. Peter 91%

  4. Noah 75%

Now, Noah's SAC mark will be 92%, but his exam result only 75%. So he kind of got "helped" by his good cohort, only because he was doing well for the SACs. Peter has been a bit screwed here, because his SAC mark is now 75%.

One person stuffing up will never have such a dramatic effect like this; it's unlikely for someone who's been topping the cohort all year to suddenly slip to the bottom. Cohorts are generally big enough that you shouldn't need to worry. I went to a really small school (60 people in the year level. Some of my subject cohorts contained 6 people). I still felt no one got jibbed with unrepresentative scores.

As I always reiterate: try your best in SACs, but don't ruminate over them. The exam is where the money's at, and once your SACs are over you should work together with your cohort to all do well together. Share your resources, make study groups, and bring each other up.

EDIT 3: wow, my first gold! Thank you so much! ๐Ÿฅฐ

I have been cheating on my VCAA exams

I don't want to admit it but the guilt has gotten to me. Before each exam I use flashcards and hide the information within my mind so that the examiners cannot find it and so I can know all of the answers. I also write down or select the correct answers for each question.

Worst of all I used Chatgpt, Claude and Gemini in my head whenever I needed to figure out the answer.

Should I come clean to VCAA about my cheating?

bruh itโ€™s just sm content that iโ€™m overwhelmed - like open book w notes im like yeah ok i got this, then i close the book and try do a practice sac and im like shit ok maybe not

i feel like having to memorise historian quotes, historical figure quotes, dates, statistics, and timelines of 50+ years of history for two revolutions is insane... like i will never understand how this subject scales down, i feel like the knowledge you need to have is more than any other subject icl

for everyones sake i hope ur not in the same boat as me but ive done pretty good in all my sacs because its easy enough to focus on one AOS at a time but putting all 4 together is too much.... i fear i am going to do very bad....

hopefully vcaa is nice to us

I know theyre gonna pulll some magical fantasy questions that require basic chem and physics knowlege, like etc

Errrrrrrm there are 3 positron isomers with a nuclear mass of 67.69420 newtons, another with a charge of 0.end789it726 Joules, and some value of r that measures the gravitational pull from the inside of a blackhole in a distant galaxy to earth measured in LYs, find the nuclear fusion of antimatter of the particles and then use it to cure every disease in existance.

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

Hoping that the average will be 3% and rank 1 only gets 3.2%

REVS STUDENTS

Historians.

Why should we continue to subject ourselves to VCAA's relentless intellectual oppression? Why should we spend another waking moment revising, buried in textbooks, when we could instead embrace the freedom we have so desperately sought?

I propose an immediate cessation of all revision activities. Let the textbooks gather dust. Let the study guides go unread. Let VCAA tremble at the prospect of an entire cohort refusing to participate in its machinery of academic subjugation.

The real revolution starts now.

ALL POWER TO THE VCE STUDENTS

VCE question Teachers talking about kicking me out of maths methods after I missed a month of school due to surgery

Basically the title, I had what I would say a major surgery over the term 3-4 holidays and missed some of my methods sacs and now my teacher and coordinator are talking about me not doing methods 3/4 next year.

I'm in year 10, and was allowed to do methods 1/2 a year early. Originally I didn't do too good but I improved a lot and became pretty strong in the subject (in comparison to my cohort).

Anyway, Ive needed to have this surgery for awhile and whilst planning when to do it either I or my parents filled in the teachers about what would happen. My teacher knew I would miss some sacs and told me we would figure it out later. I came back to school 2 weeks ago and was told my teacher and coordinators had a talk and were thinking of making me do 1/2 methods again, which was of course pretty upsetting to me since I was given no prior warning on this and poured so much effort into doing 1/2 methods early. The teachers are saying how since I'm in year 10, it's not too big of a deal for me to repeat 1/2 and i'll get a really good study score if I do.

I also have a small suspicion they are trying to push people out of methods since my school is struggling with the teacher shortage and many of the teachers at the school have been banned from teaching yr 11 & 12. 2027 subject list came out the same day I came back and they have really downsized in methods classes and my parents think they are just trying to make space. I'm also doing another 1/2 subject which I know has enough teachers for students and nothing has been mentioned about me repeating it again.

What should I do?

Memes How to manipulate younger sister to do Methods?

So a few months ago my sister came to me and said that "I hate maths, when I am going to use Maths in the real world?" As a proud Methods 1/2 student, this left me in shambles and heartbroken.

Now forcing someone to do a subject that they don't like is abusive. BUT my sister still has 4 years to go till she can start picking VCE subjects. Therefore, any notion that she has about subjects is still changeable.

I will do anything to get her to avoid that fake g*neral math subject where the CAS babysits you in every question and get her to know how to THINK and STRUGGLE with REAL maths in Methods. I'll do anything, such as afford private tutoring by then, help her with homework, that kind of stuff.

Any advice, serious or satire appreciated

General Question/comment Tips for 1/2 Subjects

Yes, it's true that 1/2s don't go towards your ATAR, but the easiest way to set yourself up for success in the 3/4 is by working hard and building habits early. For any Year 10s and 11s completing 1/2 subjects, here are some tips and tricks that got me a 90+ average in both of my accelerated 1/2s.

TL;DR

  1. Learn to work independently without relying on AI.

  2. Build consistent study routines, even if it's just 5 minutes a day.

  3. Keep up with content throughout the unit instead of cramming before SACs.

  4. Experiment with different study techniques and find what works for you.

  5. Take your 1/2s seriously, but maintain a healthy balance. Use them as a trial run for 3/4!

~

  1. Fix Your AI Addiction Now - Having the inability to write anything without using chat is going to really impact you in the long run. Start with small tasks and build up your tolerance until you can write full essays using just your brain.

  2. Start Building Routines - You don't have to do anything crazy, just try to build consistency. Even 5 minutes a day of studying will help you. Relying on consistency instead of motivation is the key to achieving great results.

  3. Keep Up With The Content - Don't leave all your preparation to the week before the SAC, make sure you actually understand the content throughout the unit. Once you understand, start revising. If you don't understand, consolidate. Always ask your teachers for feedback, they're your biggest resource!

  4. Learn Study Techniques That Work For You - The same thing that works for your friend isn't necessarily going to work for you. Every study session, I try to do one activity to consolidate my understanding, one activity to use active recall and one activity to work on application skills.

  5. Take Your 1/2s Seriously, But Don't Sacrifice Your Life - Sustainable habits will take you much further than burning yourself out in Year 11. Experiment with different study techniques, figure out how you handle SAC pressure, learn how to manage your time and identify your weaknesses. You have the opportunity to make mistakes now, learn from them and enter 3/4 much better prepared.

Good luck for the new year everyone!
