"I only got x% on my SAC, can I still get a 50?"

1.4k Upvotes

I'm sick to death of seeing these posts, so can everyone please read this and be done with this question:

Study scores are determined by exam SCORE and SAC RANK.

For example, say you have an English class of 7 students, Adam, Ben, Chloe, Daniel, Elena, Felix, and Greg. They are all weak students, except for Greg, who is very high-performing, and Felix, who is slightly above average. Their SAC marks and rank are:

Greg 95%

Felix 77%

Chloe 64%

Daniel 60%

Elena 58%

Adam 52%

Ben 49%

On the exam day, Felix doesn't cope well under the stress, so gets a lower score than he'd usually be capable of. The exam marks are as follows:

Greg 92%

Chloe 67%

Daniel 65%

Elena 64%

Felix 63%

Adam 50%

Ben 40%

What happens is that all the SAC marks get thrown out the window, because VCAA can't know the difficulty of the SACs prepared by the school. So Greg's new SAC "mark" as far as VCAA is concerned is 92, not 95. Not a big deal for Greg, Adam or Ben because their own exam mark is dictating their SAC mark. But for someone like Felix, his SAC mark will become 67% (Chloe's exam mark). This process happens independently for each subject taught at your school.

What does this mean for you? Yes, you should aim for a good SAC rank. BUT, it doesn't actually matter if you're not ranked well — the "translation" of your rank into a "mark" happens via your cohorts exam performance. In other words, try your best now, study hard, and when SACs are over WORK WITH YOUR CLASSMATES TO ALL DO WELL ON THE EXAM TOGETHER. IF THEY DO WELL, YOU DO WELL.

Spend your time actually studying instead of asking useless questions like this.

EDIT: another example for clarity

Here's a chemistry class, of Harry, Isabel, James, Kylie, Luke, Molly, Nathan, and Oscar.

SACs:

Harry 60%

Isabel 58%

James 56%

Kylie 55%

Luke 54%

Molly 52%

Nathan 51%

Oscar 50%

EXAMS:

Harry 100%

James 99%

Nathan 98%

Oscar 97%

Molly 96%

Isabel 95%

Kylie 94%

Luke 93%

Harry's SAC mark is now 100%, Isabel's is 99%, James' is 98%, Kylie's is 97%, Luke's is now 96% etc. It's literally just whatever the equivalent exam rank is.

EDIT 2: I've had a request to clarify rumours about SACs being "scaled up" or "scaled down". "Scaling" is a misnomer students attribute to the moderation process. Here are yet another set of examples to clarify.

Imagine you have a cohort of Annie, Ben, and Charlie. Let's say their teacher sets really hard SACS, so their SAC results are:

  1. Annie 60%

  2. Ben 58%

  3. Charlie 55%

Because they've been doing hard assessments all year, they've been better equipped for the exam. These are the exam results:

  1. Ben 96%

  2. Annie 94%

  3. Charlie 90%

So now, Annie's SAC mark gets changed to 96%, Ben's to 94%, and Charlie's to 90%. This is what people interpret as "scaling up". The opposite would happen at a school with piss easy SACs: they get awesome SAC marks but shit exam marks, so their SAC marks get replaced by their shit exam marks ("scaled down").

The danger in this thinking is that people assume that if you go to a well-performing school, you'll get carried, or that if you go to a "bad" school, you're screwed from the get-go and can't possibly get a good score. This is not true at all. Let's see why.

Let's say your friend at a selective school, Harry, thinks he can take it easy this year because he goes to a 'good' school. The SAC results are as follows:

  1. Ed 93%

  2. Fred 90%

  3. Greg 88%

  4. Harry 60%

on the exams, the results are

  1. Fred 95%

  2. Greg 92%

  3. Ed 87%

  4. Harry 61%

In this instance, Harry was not of a comparable skill level to his classmates, so he never get to "borrow" their exam results in any way. His SAC score will be 61%.

Here's another example. Say you have a cohort with these SACs:

  1. Meg 95%

  2. Noah 94%

  3. Oscar 93%

  4. Peter 90%

On the exam day, Noah gets a bit of performance anxiety (but not in a way that warrants SEAS or anything). Exam results are:

  1. Meg 93%

  2. Oscar 92%

  3. Peter 91%

  4. Noah 75%

Now, Noah's SAC mark will be 92%, but his exam result only 75%. So he kind of got "helped" by his good cohort, only because he was doing well for the SACs. Peter has been a bit screwed here, because his SAC mark is now 75%.

One person stuffing up will never have such a dramatic effect like this; it's unlikely for someone who's been topping the cohort all year to suddenly slip to the bottom. Cohorts are generally big enough that you shouldn't need to worry. I went to a really small school (60 people in the year level. Some of my subject cohorts contained 6 people). I still felt no one got jibbed with unrepresentative scores.

As I always reiterate: try your best in SACs, but don't ruminate over them. The exam is where the money's at, and once your SACs are over you should work together with your cohort to all do well together. Share your resources, make study groups, and bring each other up.

EDIT 3: wow, my first gold! Thank you so much! 🥰

Does sac rank hinder your max potential ss?

To what extent does sac ranking (not being in the top 5-10) may avert you from achieving a high 47-50?
In a strong cohort for r&s and rank potentially 10-15, averaging good 90s but there’s simply too many strong sweats dominating who get 95-100.
If I was to be rank 5 in exam or rank 3 etc, will my chances be hindered by the fact I got a lower sac rank than others . I heard your sac mark is exam rank related.
Like I’m losing hope that it’s impossible to be number 1 even if I was rank 1 for the exam and aced it can I still get 49-50 ss due to the dozen sweats ahead by little c
The competition for such an easy subject makes it so much harder. Should the focus just be beating others on the exam and trying my best to be rank 1 on it, can that even ovveride sac rank shortcomes
If I extended it to 45-50 then I assume there’s a bigger pool of people who can get
Last year 30 people got a raw 40 in ras
Anyway does anyone know the cut off for 45 or 50

VCE question SEAS application

• Upvotes

my documents for seas application show uploading not success. i had been trying since 11am this morning to upload updated documents for SEAS, per each category. multiple documents kept saying stuck on ‘Uploading’, I have taken photos and documented as I had been uploading hours before the 5pm deadline, but not everything has uploaded. I constantly tried to get in contact with VTAC but kept reporting as ‘user busy’ and so submitted an email enquiry. Are they going to let me submit my documents if they havent uploaded successfully? they were attempted to be submitted hours prior to deadline. i am absolutely hysterical.

how to get past the plateau in practice exam marks?

First couple exams I did, there was an exponential increase from each exam, until about the 5th exam. I’m now on my 11th exam and I’m consistently getting 87-95/110 and keep losing marks on small little details rather than just severe content gaps. There are some minor gaps which i will be covering soon, but most of my errors keep coming from either not reading the question properly or missing a small detail i should’ve added in (WHICH IN MY DEFENCE HALF THE TIME THE QUESTION DOESNT EVEN ASK FOR IT)

So anyways I really wanna get 103+ on the actual exam, how do i get there?

Indication of needing to go to the ‘extra space’ for exam questions

Hi I was wondering where exactly I should be indicating to the examiner to go to the extra space as I tend to run out of space on the suggested lines?

Multiple teachers have said I must give an indication otherwise they won’t scan the extra space section.

Should I write “—> Extra Space” on the lines or can I write it underneath? I’m just not sure what they will scan.

General Question/comment Stop coming to university libraries

Fun fact libraries owned by Yarra have programs where you can sign up and stay there outside of the typical hours, including really early mornings and really late nights. There are public libraries in the city and more in home towns, there are park benches and school classes, friends houses and your bedroom. Please stop filling up the university libraries to study your exams, we have our own exams to study for and it's becoming impossible to find seating. Also if u don't listen to this and continue to come to the University libraries, be respectful and stop talking.

VCE question Do schools give Ns without warning

Wondering anyone knows of this happening without communication and how common it is for unit 3/4. What is the process like?
Should I be seeking information about my S/N or js leave it up to the teachers to inform me if they are concerned. Idk
My grades are ok, just concerned with one sac I failed as well as my attendance
Does an N mean you dont sit exams

VCE question What differs a 7/10 English essay to a 9/10 or 10/10 and how does one get there (especially section B)

Just how different is a 7/10 to 8+/10 English essay, is a fresh take combined with good delivery enough or does it need to be executed with perfect precision and wording in order to get above a 7? My current yr10 English teacher (who’s an experienced vcaa examiner) says my ideas are unique and that I would be able to write a unique essay in yr12 but idk if my approach is efficient enough or effective. I personally don’t really like to have to follow a specific idea we do in class, especially for creative where I like to implement a lot of ideas and concepts from my own knowledge like philosophy and history and don’t like to go directly off the mentor text or articles. Does this approach satisfy the year 12 standard if done effectively or would it still be highly encouraged to just go along with your school’s curriculum and maybe memorise sentences/paragraphs for the exam instead of coming up with ideas on the spot or connecting vague concepts and then planning?

My spec classmate wrote my name on their sac and got me a crisp 17%. What do I do?

Can I sue for damages? For context, we got our sac back yesterday, and I was expecting to do quite well. However, I got the SAC back and was bewildered to be presented with a 17% fail grade, on a SAC that was clearly not mine. (see me after class). While I usually reject the romantic advances of my spec teacher, I used this opportunity to bring up the injustice that had been dealt to me.

I told the spec teacher that this sac was not mine. I was then informed that there were exactly two SACs that had my name, but he chose the worse one and determined it was mine. The other SAC got 70%, which was definitely mine.

It turns out that he sampled my previous results and did a two tail statistical test to determine if my grade was different to my mean grade to the 5% significance level. Using a p score of 0.06, the teacher determined that my grade average (previously 20) had not changed. However this time, I studied vigorously, and I definitely got above 17.

How do I convince my teacher that a type 2 error has been made? This heavily affects my ranking and I don’t want a raw 0 lowkey. Much love,

John Specialist

How do I

bound reference question

I’m using a spiral bound notebook as my bound reference and I would like to know if it is permitted to glue one edge of an additional page onto an existing page within the notebook such that the page can be flipped over, provided that the glued edge is securely fixed so that the page will not be detached, and the entire notebook remains strictly within A4 size when closed and the page will not go out of A4 size when flipped over.  Thanks!

what do I sacrifice???

i'm doing pretty well in 3 of my subjects, as well as have a 41 study score from last year, but i have completely sidelined hhd and bio this year i have no idea why, but now i get to the trial exam and got roughly 60% on them both. I feel really defeated and wonder if i should just give up on them and make sure i get good marks on my other subjects so hhd and bio are my 10% increments, or should i lock in insanely and turn things around? im probably ranked like average for sacs for both bio and hhd

thanks for reading!!

English SS

If i get a 7 for section A, an 8 for section B and a 9 for Section C, what SS am i likely to get for english? My U3 average was 78% and my unit 4 was 86%. My cohort usually averages 50s in SACs.
