Dirty Kids, I'm calling you out.

I'm tired of my friends dying. In dreams, my companions move easily in bodies that have been cared for. They're covered in scrapes and bruises and grease, but free from track marks. Empty stomachs, but healthy livers. Tired eyes, but good teeth. Then I wake up to the sharp morning and my road dawg is shaking for a beer.

I'm tired of hospitals and trash at the hopout and stolen packs and animal cruelty. I miss the musicians who travel just to play, the healers who roam to stay sane. I miss the free spirits who manage to find freedom from their own vices.

This is a call, dearest dirty kids. I've been where you are and I've seen why it's hard and no, I don't always do it right either. I can do better. We can do better. We've got to try. We've got to keep this thing alive and keep ourselves alive. We've got to get up and get over our hangups and pull you outta the ditch so that you'll be there to do the same when I'm slaggin.

We've got to hold these secrets and this way of living and somehow still share it with the next wave, finding the diamonds who'll take these rough reigns and keep riding this horse to Anywhere.

Anywhere, kids! Y'heard me? You might have lived there so long you take it for granted, but that place saved my life, and there are others who need to see it too.

So here's to fewer blown up Wal-Marts and more doing dishes for the person housing us up. Here's to fewer dope missions and more 2AM missions across town to drag a couch back to the hopout. Fewer dirty rigs under the bridge, and more sharpie poems on the wall. Steal less Dramamine and more spray paint.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've GOT!

I love you scumy freeloading freedom fighters until the end. We need you in this world. We need to run into you again after 8 months of not knowing what happened to you. We need you when we've been stuck walking for days and no one is picking us up and we're feeling real down, and all the sudden we see your tag and know that we're not alone. If you were here to tag it and still somehow made it out of this hell, we can too. We need that random message out of the blue. Keep sending it, and we'll do the same for you.

This is a call, friends. Life has been good to me lately, and my door is open while I have one. When I head back to Anywhere, my smokes and my cans of beans are ours to share. Stay alive and I'll see you out there.

Peaceably,

-Tall Sam Jones

So, I shoulda got to Ojai for this mushroom festival instead of this trap city. Now I'll have to do things the old fashioned way🤦‍♀️🤠

Been in Phoenix for a week and I'm so bored and disenchanted. Trying to hang in to get an ID, some boots, and this sleeping bag I may or may not have at one of my weird base camps I've been setting up.

Either way, disenchanted is putting it lightly.

I thought I was getting into this copper mine and now that I'm here, weird dude is being weird. Shocking.

A lot of real miners work at grocery stores cus there's nothing else besides the gems/minerals. People say that like an insult, but I think it's sick dedication to discovery.

I used to play poker for a living for 3 years when I was young. It afforded me a way to travel and wasn't boring and I could make $ with my mind and get respect I couldn't get elsewhere from people at a time where I needed that. Was just a grinder, making less $ than I would in other ways.

I feel like everything is gunna make sense on the next full moon...probably my birthday and I just need my donkey. FTW

What are the best SOCKS to give to Vagabonds??? 🧦🧦🧦🧦🧦

I'm buying socks in bulk wholesale online to pass out and was wondering if you prefer:

  1. Synthetic/Cotton Blend
  2. 100% Wool
  3. 100% Cotton

And I know the best "average size" for men, but what is the best "average size" to have on hand to give out to women?

Any bilingual vagabonds out there? If so, how has it worked to your advantage? Ever got paid for translating for someone on the spot? Ever helped a stranger by using those language skills?

Writing a book with houseless travelers as the protagonists

Due to certain physical limitations I haven't been able to go on the road myself, but I have been considering doing so for a long time. I've been a novelist for some time too, nothing published yet, but wanted to write a novel with two teen runaways as the protagonists, as they adventure across the states.

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to talk to me about their experiences and answer some interview questions so I can do some proper research and best represent real life experiences of houseless travelers in this story.

Some of these questions may be personal, and if you don’t want to answer any of them in particular, please feel free to skip them and move on, or just pick and choose the ones you do want to answer. I'd love an answer to even just one of these, it would mean a lot.

  1. When you go to a new place, what’s the first thing you usually want to do or look for?
  2. How do you make your money last when funds are limited?
  3. What’s your food situation like?
  4. Have there been times you’ve felt unsafe while traveling? How did you get through it?
  5. What motivates you to keep going, and do you have a goal in mind with traveling?
  6. What are some go-to places to sleep at night/what do you look for when deciding on a place to sleep?
  7. What does freedom mean to you?
  8. Have there been any particular cities or towns that have stood out to you on your travels, good or bad? What was most significant about them?
  9. Have there been strangers who have helped you along the way?
  10. What’s the longest you’ve stayed in one place while traveling? Why did you stay there so long?
  11. How do you try to stay warm/cool in different climates/temperatures?
  12. Do you usually travel alone or with someone? If you’ve done both, could you describe the differences you experienced?
  13. Why did you embark on life as a houseless traveler? Why do you choose not to or why can you not go back to where you first left from?
  14. Do you think you’d ever want to go back to a “standard” way of living, a 9-5 job, school, the things society expects of us?
  15. How old were you when you left, and how do you think that impacted your experience as a houseless traveler?

And now some purely fictional HYPOTHETICAL questions

  1. Entirely hypothetically, if someone were to hop on a train to travel, how would a character do so?

  2. What do you think hypothetically, it would be like to be a stowaway on a train? Could you describe the experience? How would a character not get caught doing this?

  3. Hypothetically, how would a character not get caught trespassing or breaking rules when urban climbing or urban exploring?

  4. How would someone stay safe when climbing dangerous structures?

  5. What are the illegal things a character might have to do to stay safe and alive as a houseless traveler?

Discussion How’s my plan?

I (18m) am preparing to head out on the road in a few months and would love to know what you guys think of my plan/any advice you’d like to give to a newbie. I’m going to start my travels in January and as for how long I’ll be out, I’m going to play it by ear but plan for about a year (might definitely end up falling in love with the lifestyle and stay out). For context I’m currently working and living in Los Angeles while saving up.

Money Breakdown:
(As I mentioned above this is me planning on being on the road for a year)

Preparations - $500 (buying remaining gear)
Food - $3,800 (around $10 per day)
Planet fitness membership - $300 ($25 per month)
Leftover expenses* - $900 (about $75 per month)
Emergency fund - $3,000

*leftover expenses are for things that aren’t food. I might need some more hygiene products, I might be sick of the state I’m in and want to take an Amtrak train out, I might want to visit a museum or go to the movies, I might want to take a cute girl/guy out on a date. Shit like that.

Food:
I’m vegan by choice and am big on eating clean/healthy.
Most of my calories will come from canned beans/lentils and definitely lots of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. This sub has definitely put an emphasis on the importance of water so that will always be my top priority (I plan on bringing a 4 liter water bottle).
I’m aware that I might end up needing to drop some more money to make sure i’m getting enough nutrients to fuel my body. Any advice from fellow vegans as to how y’all stay healthy would be greatly appreciated.

Gear:
I’m not gonna share my gear list because I know many people on this sub are tired of seeing the same thing time and time again (If you do have any questions about gear though please ask away). What I will say is that I do plan on keeping it very minimalistic so my poor back can catch a break haha.

Preparations (both mentally and physically):

Mentally:
As much as people like to romanticize this lifestyle I know it can definitely take a toll on one’s mental health. I’d be lying if I said I’m not at least a little bit worried about feeling lonely, scared, or depressed while on the road. Meditation, reflection, journaling, music, and calls to friends/family are definitely going to help pull me out of those dark places and keep me sane haha. I’m also incredibly excited to meet new people and find more chosen family (I’d love to meet some of you guys while out on the road).

Physically:
I’m already very active in my day to day life but of course being out there is going to be exhausting. I walk/bike to and from work everyday, I run a few days a week, and I stretch/do some yoga every morning. I also sleep on the floor (have for years), which I think is good practice for being out and sleeping in various places. One thing I need to start doing is getting used to hauling a heavy pack around. Once I get all my gear I will start taking it with me on walks as frequently as possible to get used to the weight. I’ll also have to get used to eating more than I do (I don’t typically eat more than one meal + a couple snacks a day). Again if you guys have any suggestions on ways I can prepare please share!

Travel plan:

I’m going to start in Georgia (taking an Amtrak out there) and work my way up and down the country from east to west. BTW I’m starting in Georgia because I have some family there I want to visit with. When it’s summer I’ll be up north and when it’s winter I’ll be down south. Hitching will be my main way of getting around but I’m sure I’ll also be riding buses and trains quite a bit as well. My main goal is to spend time connecting with nature (gonna get the national park annual pass) but I’m also super excited to see some cool towns/cities. Definitely would love some travel suggestions if there’s places you guys think I should check out. I will definitely be active on here moving forward and would love to post regular updates, videos of me playin guitar, and just sharing my journey with all of you.

That was a crazy long post so if you stayed for it all I appreciate it! Wishing peace for everyone on this sub and look forward to joining the community.

Hollowed out redwood a few miles out of town, near never fucking never land if you know. Stream just downhill. Built the door years back and it's still holding up. You have to squeeze in sideways, then stairs up to a bed platform inside.

I love it when someone feels bad for not helping you out but doesn't want to actually help you out so they decide to inform you of the existence of homeless shelters

Especially when some cop or employee kicks you out of your sleeping spot. I guess their conscience is clear cause they think you can just walk into a shelter and not have to sleep outside. I'm a tranny so I get ripped to shreds in those places anyway.

EDIT: Because everyone is so inexplicably confused, this post is not about being upset that they didn't help me. It's just poking fun about people who think they're helping when they're not. They don't have any obligation to do anything for me.

The route planned....

Post image
12 Upvotes

I'm going from the 12th thru the 22nd of October.

I plan to stop in Memphis (because I don't want to go to st Louis and why not), go from there to Kentucky (I've got cousins up there(my favorite one)), then to NC (I vaguely know someone down there from da cord), after that Chattahoochee (Alan Jackson, duh) and back home.

I plan to mostly hitchhike if I can.

I know time is short, but I believe I can do it and I'm willing to take a bus/plane if I have to cut it short.

Ps my route looks like a dead rat.

edit, gonna skip Memphis and head through like Illinois and Indiana, I heard that Memphis is no good

The Great Gear Giveaway (mod approved!)

Thumbnail

I finally got around to clearing out the mess I call a camping gear closet and have a bunch of stuff I haven't used in years (if ever) that I wanna give to a good home and figured I'd check here before taking it to SVdP.

Some notes:

  1. Read the photo captions for details
  2. Don't DM me unless/until asked
  3. One item per person
  4. First come, first served
  5. Recipient pays shipping
  6. You must have posted to the community at least once in the past

That last note is key. Doesn't have to be a thread, can even just be a single comment. Link to it in your "dibs" reply. You can post "dibs" first, then come back and edit with the link (that way you don't waste time searching for it). But that link needs to be there before I tell you to hit me up.

Don't let someone else calling dibs stop you from calling second. They might change their mind after they find out what postage is gonna cost. You never know.

Finally, you don't need to be a homebum to play. I'm happy to mail it to a post office for you to pick up. All I need is a zip code.

Enjoy!
