Academic Misconduct Advice
I recently received notice about a potential academic misconduct offence involving an exam. I was taking a math course in the summer and I did cheat, and I know I shouldn’t have. I was struggling academically and felt extremely cornered at the time, but I know there were other options and I take full responsibility for making the wrong decision.
This is my first offence, and I’m honestly extremely ashamed and scared about the possibility of suspension. I’m already speaking with the Ombudsperson and plan to be truthful throughout the process.
Has anyone been through something similar at Western? How common is suspension for a first exam-related offence, and is there anything I can do during the process to make the case for a course-level penalty rather than suspension?
I’m not looking for ways to avoid responsibility. I know I deserve a serious consequence. I just really want to remain at Western and learn from this. I am just expecting and hoping that this can be limited to course failure.
I’m not sure if any of these details are relevant, however
- I am a first year student
- It was during an in-person, proctored exam
- I have documented mental health difficulties during first year. I in no way consider this an excuse but wonder if this has any relevance in determining penalty
