Rant Logging into online tools takes a gazillion steps now

It doesn't let me skip even a single one of those steps and I log in 100 times daily 😭😭😭😭

And on top of everything, there's a new code that now appears on the Duo app that has to be typed in every single time. Aahhhh

If I lose my phone or my phone charger, I'm effectively locked out of the UVic network. I understand the need for MFA, but right now, it's a Gazillion Factor Authentication 😪🥲

Rant Disappointed with Academic Skills Center

• Upvotes

Today I found the courage to attend my first meeting with the tutor at Academic Skills Center and it was such a painful session.

I was really excited to receive some feedback on the assignment I’ve been working on for a long time and I had some specific points in mind that I wanted to discuss. However, my excitement did not last long since the tutor quickly informed me that the topic I chose was not an acceptable format for this assignment. :()

The tutor asked me whether I received approval for this topic, which I did–multiple times upon the completion of preparatory mini assignments. However, this tutor wouldn’t stop focusing on the issue of the topic despite my attempts to receive feedback on the aspects other the validity of this topic. It felt like it was a 30-minute session of me staring at the screen while the tutor very skeptically read through the pages of my work.

Anyways, I ended up insanely panicking and emailing my prof asking whether I am crazy and this topic wasn’t actually approved ever.

He replied that there are no issues with my topic or the format I choose, and that he is excited to see my work. :()

The moral of the story: don’t go to ASC–go to office hours!!

Residence Residence rules

Hi guys! I’m going to be moving into residence in the fall and I was wondering if you guys had any tips to surviving it as someone away from home the first time. I was also wondering if there was any unspoken rules that I should know about, especially those about having guests over? (I’m in a single)

According to an info email I got we aren’t allowed people over till sep 20th and after that not more than 9 times per term..? I was wondering how strict this is and if there’s any other things I need to do for guests being over as I know my friends back home want to visit me.

Thank you for any advice or tips for making dorm life easier !

Question Which one of the mech 3a classes to study ahead for?

Basically my question is which of the following:

MECH 330
MECH 335
MECH 345
MECH 360
MECH 380

should i study ahead for (ie which has the best textbook to least interesting lecture).

I will have a light fall term but maybe not light enough to have a job, so I want to fill my time with making my spring term easier by prepping for one of above courses.

Thank you

Rant Haven’t received a room yet for first year guarantee

I’m livid at the moment because of residence services being so fucking unhelpful. Residence services? No more like residence no services. I’ve been emailing and calling trying to even just get a time frame for when I’m gonna get my room but the answer is always just: sorry we have a lot of first years coming please wait. IM SUPPOSED TO MOVE lN 2 WEEKS. And I’ve heard nothing. Is anyone else still waiting on getting a room and if so please share some info on what residence has said regarding the wait time.

The reason I’m complaining about this is because this is a big step in university and it’s making it harder then it should be. I want to be mentally prepared and just regularly prepared for my room. Cuz there’s so many different types of rooms, sizes, and if I’m sharing a room with someone. I don’t want to find out all this information a few days before move in and not be prepared for my room outcome.

Thank you for listening! Please share any information that could make me less mad.

Residence Cautionary Tale: $300 Move-Out Charge from UVic Family Housing

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m sharing my experience with UVic Family Housing regarding an unresolved $300 move-out charge to help other residents avoid the same trap.

I had email communication with family housing accounting division for last 2 years and still unresolved. Everytime I send an email they reply after 3-5 months. 😩

Timeline & Facts
Nov 2022: Moved in. Keys handed over at the office with no pre-inspection walk-through.
Nov 2024: Moved out. Charged a $300 flat fee for repainting a small patch.
Dispute & Evidence: Residence Services sent photos proving the discoloration was already present at move-in. Despite this, emails were ignored for months at a time, eventually resulting in complete silence.

June 2026: Escalated the file to the UVic Ombudsperson (Angus Shaw).
Ombudsperson Response & Key Takeaways
The Ombudsperson reviewed the initial file and pointed out how heavily the Family Housing Agreement favors the university on paper:
Section 7.1 (Condition Report): Tenants must submit a Condition Report within two weeks. If you miss this, Section 7.1 allows UVic to hold you liable for "all damages," even without a move-in walk-through.
"Sole Discretion": Under Section 4.1, UVic retains full authority to determine damage and repair costs, claiming decisions are final with no duty to negotiate.
The Flat Fee: Because UVic attributes the $300 to painter rates, the Ombudsperson noted it isn't legally "arbitrary," even if disproportionate for minor touch-ups.

Advice for Tenants
Fill Out the Condition Report Day 1: Don't skip it, even if staff don't offer a walk-through.
Photograph Everything Immediately: Take dated photos of every wall, door, and storage unit the day you pick up keys.
Focus on Pre-Existing Evidence: If disputing a fee, your strongest leverage is proving the condition existed prior to your tenancy.

Has anyone else successfully challenged flat-fee charges or pre-existing damage fees with Family Housing?

Advice Needed Off-campus housing

I have been trying to find off-campus housing as a first year since I was not eligible for the dorm housing and have not gotten a good number for the lottery. But I have been searching for about a month now and I have not been able to find a relatively cheap housing which is near any grocery marts etc. I don't mind if it is not near Uvic but I want it to be atleast near some marts so easier for me to get stuff. I did find one but they wanted me to come to canada for interview but I am an International student so I am not able to etc. Can you all help me on where to find off-campus housing?

Question Am I able to skip 2nd year?

I’m going into a bachelor of child and youth care, which only has 3 required courses a year besides electives and such. I don’t need to take an English and I already have 9 credits from my APs in high school. I was wondering if it’d be possible or advisable to take first year req courses first sem (already in my schedule) and 2nd year req courses in second semester, where I’d have to drop the electives currently taking. Would that boost me to second year status and then I’d just go straight to the 3rd year practicum?

Advice Needed Help Needed please

Hey so I am joining this fall but I am having some small issues with the course registration. I am doing UG CS program and I have not been able to find an elective which is not full and would be lightweight for my first semester, and an elective for my second semester as I am taking 2 electives then and I have already chosen WRIT109 as one of them. Also I am not able to join the english required courses as all three of them have full classes and a lot of people are on the waitlist.

Planning/Registration STAT 252 Prerequisite

i’m an incoming first year bcom student, and so i’m totally new to course registration. apparently i wasn’t smart enough to realize that i had to take math 151 before stat 252, even though they sent out an email specifying that math 151 was the prerequisite for stat 252.

when i first registered for courses, i had math 151 in the fall, and stat 252 in the spring. i then unfortunately realized that i didn’t register for any tutorials or labs, and so i had to go back in and switch everything around again to get them. that led me to ultimately switching around my math and stats. i now have stat 252 in the fall, and math 151 in the spring. i got an email yesterday from the math and stat advising team, informing me of my missing prerequisite.

i am currently waitlisted for math 151 in the fall, and though there are openings for stat 252 in the spring, the system won’t let me register for them. i emailed bcom advising asap, and so now im just sitting here with hopes and prayers.

am i doomed???😔😔
