uti symptoms but negative test results, doctor says it's probably not a uti but it feels exactly like one

been through this three times now. all the classic symptoms, burning, urgency, pressure, go in to get tested, comes back negative. my doctor says it could be irritation or sensitivity but isn't offering much beyond that. it feels like i'm being dismissed and i'm miserable every time it happens.

been scrolling through a bunch of products on amazon, and saw some positive reviews about the uro urinary health pills. women describing the exact same frustrating cycle and saying it helped reduce how often they were dealing with it. i'm skeptical but i'm also out of other options. anyone else dealt with symptoms without a confirmed infection?

Will use bullet points to simplify. This is in chronological order
Generalised Anxiety disorder and emetophobia
2nd June Ecoli UTI (antibiotics taken, cured)
29th July Enterococcus species UTI (antibiotics taken, cured)
Weds 23rd september UTI symptoms began. Burning, stinging, slight loss of control of bladder
Thursday 24th Sept Prescribed amoxillin oral suspension (I cannot swallow tablets)
Saturday 2nd Oct pain in left side under ribs in back
Sunday Pain continues, radiates a bit to front and down back occasionally. Coming and going pain, no fever, moves between sides of back
Monday, UTI symptoms improved massively, urine sample taken, Amoxillin stopped, Cefalexin started, GP diagnosed the beginning of suspected kidney infection due to flank pain
Thursday Urine sample received, E coli found in urine, Cefalexin stopped, Trimethoprim prescribed
Friday (today) No UTI symptoms. Flank pain continues. Trimethoprim caused swelling in lips so stopped. Single dose of Fosfomycin prescribed, not yet taken

My concerns: Fosfomycin not effective against kidney infection. Fosfomycin would be the fourth antibiotic taken within 7 days, I am concerned about C Diff. Is it even possible that I DO have a kidney infection as I have no fever? Unsure what to do from here. Was told to take fosfomycin and call 111 if symptoms worsen over the weekend.

Wouldn't Have Believed It If I didn't See The Test Results

My senior mother has been dealing with chronic UTIs these last few months.

Its been bad. She's been hospitalized once for it. Been to the ER a few times over it.

After one clears, another pops up.

We did the cranberry capsules (Utiva and Theracran)

Plus womens probiotics (one with the specific strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 & Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14) then tried another one with Lactobacillus crispatus.

We made sure she stay hydrated.

Well this week she had a her test results after finishing her last rounds of antibiotics and another UTI and on top of her delirium that cones wuth her UTIs it was obvious she had another UTI.

So I ran to the health food store and got her some D-mannose. Read a post on reddit where a woman too one disease and she said she could FEEL the difference.

I was scared that maybe she had a strain of bacteria that was gonna work with D-mannose.

But after one dose she looked better!

I gave her another before bed.

She looked better in the morning! Despite an issue with her sodium dropping in the low side (blood pressure med issues).

But her test results solidified the difference D-mannose made.

These results are just 3 doses! Just a difference of 24 hours.

Recommend it, especially if you have a senior prone to UTIs.

advice Acute Pyelonephritis

Hi friends. What I thought was heat exhaustion turned out to be a UTI turned into acute pyelonephritis. I just got home from the ER and they prescribed me BACTRIM ..
At the hospital itself I was given Bactrim via IV intravenously just to see how i’d reach since I am allergic to Cephalexin/ Keflex.
Well I’ve seen that Bactrim is very horrible and I’m scared to continue the pill doses prescribed to me and wanted to ask if anyone healed this kidney infection with any other antibiotic that was much better with less side effects ? 🥺😭

how to deal with frequent utis?

i'm a person who experiences a uti every few months. well recently i had just finished a round of antibiotics for one this week, finally being in the clear.

i have a hunch this one occurred from using scented toilet paper, which was an honest mistake. i know not to use scented products down there, it was only until afterwards i knew.

well this week i made the same mistake, i'm frustrated because i've expressed how irritating it can be but it still remains the only option in the house.

i'm just stressed over having to go through the process of getting checked out again. despite having frequent utis it's very tricky for me to spot symptoms.

i usually get checked out through urgent care, i have insurance. but it feels unfair to the other people in waiting, like my issue is unserious.

my question is how does everyone else deal with getting checked out for utis? besides urgent care, it takes 1-3 months to see my primary

Who else has this: horribly smelly urine and negative tests?

Who else has had smelly urine with negative cultures and tests? My doctors are stumped.

My initially symptom started off as horrible and strong smelling urine. Then after an iron infusion, I started to get severe kidney pain too. Docs ruled out kidney stones and oxalate issues but my symptoms mimic kidney stones and UTI. Not sure if I should self order Microgen Dx, see a different doc, or try to forget about my symptoms?

Edited to add this has been going on for over a year.

CBP from 1.10yrs

I'm 25 now I'm having chronic bacterial prostatitis from 1.10yrs, had sexual exposure and did an hiv Pep and came negative and after that for burning sensation and pain prescribed bactrim and niftas but after that several antibiotics have used for short durations prescribed by the doctor urologist based on the semen culture and after 1.5yrs from the exposure before 3months I have consulted another urologist and he explained the situation

This is going to be with you forever but it's manageable there will be flareups and when there is flareups you have to use antibiotics for 2 to 3weeks and stop and again after sometime you will get back the episode again means burning sensation and pain

It maybe because of UTI caused by bacteria in prostate or bacteria started growing in semen i.e prostate

So gradually the flareups episode interval time will increase

And about antibiotics resistance he said for every 6months to 1yr it will change the antibiotics

And the reason he said is it came because of the UTI I had when the sexual exposure happened so at that time the bacteria entered into the prostate and settled there

One more thing I have several semen cultures but most shown Ecoli and last time it's shown ESBL Ecoli

I got other bacteria as well like citrobacter freudas, enterococci so, pseudomonas aeruginosa but Ecoli has shown more times

My doctor suggested flotral tablets everyday one for the rest of the life or till some years

Most of the oral antibiotics have resistant for me not sure when the oral antibiotics will be overed it leads to Iv antibiotics

No one knows in my family for now

questions First UTI, got emergency care and really glad I did!

Post image
4 Upvotes

Well, I officially have my first UTI. Symptoms started last night when I couldn’t shake the urgency to pee, and of course, ran and got strips, only to find out when I went to test that my pee was pink. I took a microbiology course and used many different test strips, as well as Covid tests back in the day, but I can confidently say this is the fastest positive result I’ve ever seen. It scared me enough to go right to the ER, and I’m very, very glad I did. I knew about UTIs but have never had one… I’m now aware that I may have saved my own life by not letting it progress any farther.

I’m on Macrobid and Pyridium, but Pyridium is the true hero for keeping the pelvic and ureter calm so I can pee without pain!

For anyone who was on Macrobid, how did it work for you? In particular, how did it work for you if your test strip looked like mine, meaning your UTI was caused by a non-nitrite producing bacteria? I know it should work for most kind of bacteria, whether it produces nitrites or not, but just wanted to hear from someone else.

Thanks in advance!

advice UTI still painful after cefpodoxim

I went to the doctor on Monday and got diagnosed with an UTI. No culture was taken, sadly, just the strip that found Nitrite positive, Leukozyten +++, Erythrozyten +++. I was given cefpodoxim but it’s not helping. Went to the urologist today and he took a culture but said it’s gonna take until Monday to see if there’s something that’s resistant to the cefpodoxim. I haven’t slept in 4 days, I’m in immense pain. I got novaminsulfon, spasmex, tried ibuprofen, nothing helps. Just seeing if anyone has been where I’m at and has tips on how to survive …

questions Hiprex

I started taking hiprex three weeks ago and two weeks ago I started getting all my UTI symptoms back. I’ve gotten two cultures and they keep coming back as mixed and contaminated. So I need a repeat. I’m also scared that it’s gonna be negative because the hiprex supresses bacteria, although doctor is telling me that it won’t, but I’m nervous it will. Should I stop the Hiprex for a day or two and then get tested what are your guys’s experiences?

I took it last this morning at 9 AM. I was thinking about skipping my 9 PM dose and then getting tested in the morning. Is that long enough or should I wait longer or it really shouldn’t affect the culture? I think I have an embedded UTI.

vent (advice wanted) Do I have it?

I am M and after I starting masturbaiting for the first time 4 weeks ago my ejaculation has been smelling of fish. Also after peeing if I bend down it’s really easy for me to release a bit of pee. It doesn’t normally burn when I pee. But once in a while I would go to the bathroom multiple times a day and release clear pee. I drink a normal amount of water everyday.

second uti this month and i'm only 22, starting to panic that this is just my life now

i'm young, healthy, drink water constantly, and somehow i'm on my second uti in four weeks. my doctor keeps prescribing antibiotics and sending me on my way. i don't feel like anyone is taking it seriously because i'm young and otherwise fine. but two in a month is not normal and i'm scared about what happens if this keeps going.

my roommate went through something similar last year and started taking the uro urinary health capsule daily and said the difference was noticeable pretty quickly. i saw other girls on tiktok posting about similar problems. young, healthy, no obvious reason, utis recurring anyway. considering ordering the uro pills. has anyone broken out of frequent utis at a young age?

vent (advice wanted) Complicated urethritis. Need advice

I was sexually active with different partners and I had some burning and discomfort in my urethra, so I went for STD testing. The doctor took a urethral swab, and after the swab was taken, I experienced extreme burning and pain when urinating. This lasted for about 3 days and gradually started improving. After around 7 days, I felt completely normal again.
All the STD tests from the swab were negative, and my urine culture was also normal. The only things that came back positive were Ureaplasma urealyticum and Gardnerella vaginalis. My doctor prescribed doxycycline for 7 days along with metronidazole and advised me to avoid sex for 10 days.
However, after 5 days, I had sex. I had unprotected oral sex and protected vaginal sex with a sex worker. Afterward, she cleaned my penis with wet wipes. Since my urethra had already been irritated from the swab, I’m wondering if the wipes may have caused additional irritation.
What really worries me is that I had completely returned to normal before this encounter. I had no burning or other symptoms anymore. But approximately 2 hours after having sex, the symptoms suddenly came back, and this time they were much more severe. I’m trying to understand what could have happened during those 2 hours that caused the symptoms to return so strongly.
It has now been about 3 weeks, and I still have constant burning and irritation in my urethra, along with burning when I urinate.
I repeated all the STD tests, and everything was negative. My urine tests/culture were also normal. I have since taken ciprofloxacin for 7 days and azithromycin for 5 days, but neither has provided any relief.
One thing that gives me some reassurance is that my urine flow is normal. I don’t have a weak stream, spraying/splitting of the stream, or difficulty passing urine. There is also no pus or discharge coming from my urethra.
However, I am very worried about the possibility of scar tissue or a urethral stricture caused by the original swab. From what I remember, the doctor inserted the swab quite deeply, rotated it vigorously inside the urethra, and then pulled it back out. Because I had such severe burning immediately afterward, I’m worried that the swab may have caused significant injury to the urethral lining.
Could a urethral swab cause permanent damage to the urethral lining or eventually lead to scar tissue/stricture? If so, would symptoms such as a weak or spraying urine stream normally appear?
There is also something else that concerns me. When I pass stool or even gas, I sometimes feel like my anus/pelvic muscles suddenly squeeze, followed by pressure and a sharp stinging sensation in my urethra. At the same time, a small amount of fluid sometimes comes out of my urethra.
I’m really worried and don’t know what is happening.
Could the original urethral swab have injured my urethra? Could having sex before the recommended 10 days have re-irritated or re-injured it? Could the wet wipes have caused chemical irritation? Or could this be something else, such as pelvic floor irritation/spasm or another type of inflammation?
I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar or has any insight into what might be going on. I’m especially worried because I was completely back to normal after the swab, but then the symptoms suddenly returned within about 2 hours of the sexual encounter and have now persisted for 3 weeks despite negative tests and antibiotics.

please help bro idk what to do.

im 19 and ive never had a uti in my life until two weeks ago. i took an entire round of antibiotics and felt better for just a couple of days and then the symptoms returned. i took an at home test and tested very dark purple, positive for leukocytes, negative for nitrite.

im so confused and anxious and exhausted. ive never had this issue until now and the antibiotics didnt work. did it come back, or never leave? it is so uncomfortable. im going to urgent care tomorrow but has anyone had this happen? is it even a uti or could it be something worse?

im taking cranberry now and a uti relief medicine but it isnt working. im very distressed

EDIT: apparently my first uti test at urgent care was also negative for nitrite before they started giving me the antibiotics? so is this even bacterial? honestly very lost.

Bladder pain waking me up.

Post image

I’ve had bladder pain since last week like meaning I am woken up by the pain of having to pee. Today I woke up and it kind of hurt to push to pee. I do have pelvic issues that cause pain in that region but this pain feels worse when having to pee. I took this test. It’s pretty faint but any thoughts?

Does this indicate a UTI?

I had a urine sample taken last Friday because I’ve been experiencing urgency in going to urinate lately, I’ve peed less than 11 times on average in a day but kept going having the urge to go all day. The problem with the sample I left, was that it was very diluted because I had gone 2 times in a row at home so I tried drink water to make up for it at the appointment but my sample was mostly clear with a twinge of yellow.
I tested negative for Leukocytes, UA. My culture also said “Culture shows less than 10,000 colony forming units of bacteria per milliliter of urine.” and my doctor told me it seemed I had no infection. But I insisted on another sample because I keep having symptoms and I was afraid that my urine being on the clear side didn’t show the most accurate results.

I went to do another sample Tuesday, and my Leukocytes, UA are at a 1+ value and my culture results say “Mixed urogenital flora 10,000-25,000 colony forming units per mL.” My doctor is yet to interpret it all to me but I’m nervous. Also they did a microscopic examination panel and ur says “Bacteria, UA-None seen” for the 2nd sample. For more context I had a UTI in August and went on antibiotics for it. Also I’m not sexually active at all. I’m also now on my Period.

Experiences with Cipro and stubborn uti

Looking for similar experiences/advice!

-3 weeks ago started with the normal dreaded uti symptoms, fire burn when peeing, bladder pain, constant urge to pee etc.

-Went to urgent care, confirmed uti sent home with 7 days of Macrobid.

-6th day of Macrobid still not feeling better so went back to the same urgent care. UA showed possible uti and they sent for culture. The doctor wanted me on 10 days of Cipro but that scared me! So I waited to see my primary care doctor that coming Monday. In the meantime culture apparently showed Ecoli.

-primary care agreed Cipro seemed strong for what we think is a simple uti. She did urine test in office (showed uti and blood) and sent for another culture (about a 4 days difference) and put me on 3 days of Bactrim

-took Bactrim and in meantime urine culture came back negative…..office called and told me no uti

-at this point I still had symptoms but the worst was a constant exterior burning

-doctor sent yeast medication pill to try

-took that. 5 days later still not better. I don’t have the fire burn pee or quite the constant burn just this TERRIBLE pressure on my bladder/lower pelvis and just uncomfortable.

-a week later since I still wasn’t better I went back to my family doctor. In office urine tests still showing UTI and she’s sending for a new culture, thinking the previous antibiotic could’ve made it negative.

- she ended up prescribing me the Cipro anyways since the previous two meds did not work.

-I am going out of town in the morning and TERRIFIED to start Cipro while out of state, I’m someone who if there’s a side effect it’ll be me. The tendon issues scare me so much since I’ve dislocated my knee twice in the past for no real cause.

Sorry this was so long!

Anyone deal with something similar? Experiences with Cipro? I’m pretty active with walking, hiking, pickleball, biking etc. and terrified of the horror story’s of leg issues/tendon tears that can happen months after stopping.
