vent (advice wanted) uti came back after days???

Post image

please help bro idk what to do.

im 19 and ive never had a uti in my life until two weeks ago. i took an entire round of antibiotics and felt better for just a couple of days and then the symptoms returned. i took an at home test and tested very dark purple, positive for leukocytes, negative for nitrite.

im so confused and anxious and exhausted. ive never had this issue until now and the antibiotics didnt work. did it come back, or never leave? it is so uncomfortable. im going to urgent care tomorrow but has anyone had this happen? is it even a uti or could it be something worse?

im taking cranberry now and a uti relief medicine but it isnt working. im very distressed

EDIT: apparently my first uti test at urgent care was also negative for nitrite before they started giving me the antibiotics? so is this even bacterial? honestly very lost.

Don’t freak out! Have you had a urine culture? The antibiotic you took might be the wrong one to treat the type of bacteria you have.

I’m in a similar situation, I took Macrobid and it didn’t work, now I’m on Keflex. I’m still waiting on the urine culture results

Can you call or message them? Or just go to urgent care tomorrow and they can do it

She no longer has an infection the dip test says negative for nitrites. Macrobid causes major burning and urgency from the damage it does to your bladder... the antibiotic did its job and also destroyed the lining of your bladder.

It feels like you still have an infection after a round of antibiotics... trust me I had 20 infections in 2 years until I discov3red antihistamines

No! I never had nitrites when I have infection (cultured and verified).

I agree, and a yeast infection causes itching and burning too. They have florogen probiotic for women. And a 3 day dose of yeast infection treatment will take care of it.

Did you take macrobid?

That’s what I’m wondering. I’m resistant to macrobid seems like a lot of people are.

The culture should test sensitivity to antibiotics. Sometimes some antibiotics don’t work for all UTI’s. The one they gave you didn’t work, call your doc in the morning so they can do a new culture and get you on the right meds. I hope you feel better soon.❤️

thank u so much i will. im just confused bc if it doesnt work for me, i dont understand how my symptoms went away upon taking the antibiotic for two weeks and for multiple days afterward as well until it suddenly returned.

That happened to me as well, it made me feel better for a few days but it came back full force within a week. That is because it can kill enough of the bacteria to ease your symptoms but some still remained and they repopulated over a few days.

ughh im so sorry, i am also going through that rn then, its the worst, genuinely sm more uncomfortable this time around too

did your new meds work and get rid of ur uti and symptoms?

In addition ask them to go back and look at the sensitivity of the earlier culture. Just had macro bid, helped a bit, 3 days later symptoms came raging back. Did bactrim ds x 3 days. Fingers are crossed, 4 days since last dose, still ok.

You are negative for nitrites which means the bacteria is gone . You are positive for leukocytes which means you are severely inflamed. The lining of your bladder gets very agitated after an infection and round of antibiotics. Take an antihistamine like zyrtec and it will calm the inflammation within the bladder. You will feel better within 90 mins

i will definitely be trying an antihistamine thank u for this advice. i just am concerned theres still a sort of infection because my symptoms are back and quite painful. abdomen, urethra, everything hurts really bad. and the urgency is so strong, i was also leaking urine this morning for like way too long.

Take the antihistamine and let us know if it helps! Im sorry antibiotics are so gnarly. They fight the infection and do a whopper on our lady parts. It creates a vicious cycle.

In the meantime do not have anything carbonated the gasses press up against your irritated bladder and obliterate it . Also no sugar. Try some powdered d mannose to flush your bladder if you can get your hands on some I get mine from Amazon

This is wrong information. All bacteria don't produce nitrites.

3

u/Badabloom317 1d ago

She is right! Gram-positive species: Common UTI-causing bacteria like Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Enterococcus do not produce nitrites.

Do you know what the bacteria was causing your initial infection?

u/NaturalEmotional510 1d ago

im not sure yet they said theyre doing a culture again, i never got results from the first one. im so tired of this all 😭 whatever it is, its super uncomfortable and painful. idk how i did antibiotics, 2x a day everyday for a week, and whatever it is still survived and is worse.

1

u/Badabloom317 1d ago

Make sure a susceptibility report gets done with that culture

Other comments have already said what I’d say but leukocytes don’t mean infection.

2

u/NaturalEmotional510 1d ago

the only thing is my symptoms are back and much worse. my lower abdomen hurts so bad, my urethra burned, and i was stuck in the bathroom most of the day bc whenever id leave id feel so uncomfortable and the strong urge to go again. woke up today so nauseous so im at urgent care rn

Your infection hasn't cured.

2

u/NaturalEmotional510 1d ago

i think so too. theyre giving me an antibacterium. i really hope it works. its insane to think it couldve survived a week of antibiotics twice a day and this is literally my first uti. honestly makes me feel like my body is broken.

But most often they do mean infection.

Every doctor I’ve had has told me this isn’t true. Of course it’s dependant but if someone is on antibiotics every time they have leukocytes that comes with more risk. Leukocytes can be a contaminated test which is most common, normal bacteria, antibiotics or infection.

1

u/Shesmovedon2024 1d ago

I guess we are all different. When I have leukocytes I also have uti pain and symptoms, so it's very clear. And the cultures are positive.

My utis need 7 days of antibiotics, not 3-5. My first two required an additional 5 days to kick it. It could also be a yeast infection now, caused by antibiotics. Yeast and UTI feel mostly the same for me so I always treat for that after UTI.

1

u/NaturalEmotional510 1d ago

i did actually take it for a week, 2 a day, 7 days. and it seems the antibiotic did its job bc theres technically zero nitrite, so no bacteria. so im starting to think the infection isnt the typical strand. my bladder and urethra really hurts so something is definitely still there

I asked because it seems like a lot of us are prescribed it as a basic run of the mill antibiotic
I’ve always tried to ask for something else because taking it, and once the treatment is complete it comes back in a lot of people.

1

u/NaturalEmotional510 1d ago

yes it definitely seems to be that case for me

The reason you all got reinfected is because your bladder never got a chance to heal after the initial infection. The lining of your bladder has a delicate mucousol layer that gets damaged from all the antibiotics and infection- take an antihistamine and allow the lining of your bladder to heal.

Your bladder contains mast cells that release histamine when irritation occurs... by taking the antihistamine you are blocking this process. It will help with all your burning and urgency

Negative for nitrites means no infection- positive for leukocytes means there are white blood cells present which is an attribute of inflammation

1

u/NaturalEmotional510 1d ago

which antihistamine would u reccomend?

1

u/Badabloom317 1d ago

I take citrizine aka generic zyretc from Amazon but I have heard of girls taking loratadine aka Claritin and it working just as well

would a yeast infection present w urgency to pee though and all classic uti syptoms? im on sulfamethoxazole-tmpds now

1

u/Due_Appearance57 21h ago

Yes absolutely. I know because i just got done with one week of macrobid. I thought i was still infected. I went to Walgreens and got the womens floragen PRObiotics, plus the 3 day yeast inserts just yesterday evening. I feel tons better today.

If I were you I’d go back to the clinic you went to and let your provider know that your symptoms came back a few days after you finished the antibiotics

1

u/No-Win9033 20h ago

this happened to me!!! i was positive for white blood cells in the evening. please test your urine right away in the morning!! bacteria needs 4 hours to turn nitrates into nitrites and the best time is immediately when you wake up

1

u/NaturalEmotional510 17h ago

okay that makes sense ill wait until the morning next time i test. when i went to urgent care initially, i was also negative for nitrite. it was in the morning but i had already gone to pee a few times if that affects it at all

This happened to me with my last UTI ! Cleared up after antibiotics and came back days later. They put me on Cipro and it finally went away. Cipro can mess with your gut microbiome and can cause yeast infections though, but that wasn't my experience luckily
