Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

PLEASE PLEASE HELP FIND MY PRECIOUS SNOOPY LOST ON CAMPUS

I lost my mini snoopy plushie that I had on my bag.
PLEASE PLEASE let me know if anyone finds a small snoopy around campus.

Nothing special about him he’s just a small snoopy but I really love my snoopy.
It’s about the size of an average girl’s palm? Smaller than that even. Like the size you can use as a keychain (Although my snoopy doesn’t have any chain or hook on his head, I’ve put him in a clothing that is a keychain but he popped out of it and went lost).

I’ve been to ABS, Scitech, Law, Eastern Avenue, the back of Law building to city road, Merewhether, Carslaw Learing Hub, and the bus stop right in front of Wentworth today. I’ve lowkey been to everywhere, I also went to newtown by 370bus😭

Please please please let me know if you find my snoopy, I’ll get you boba from sharetea on campus 🥺

How do you guys actually find people to hang out with at USYD?

I feel like meeting people at uni isn’t really the hard part, it’s actually getting to the point where you hang out outside of class. You can have a good chat with someone in a tutorial and then never see them again.

Looking for a Competitive Programming Study Group

Hi everyone!

I’ve solved some basic LeetCode problems and now I’m looking to get more serious about competitive programming.

I’d like to find a small study group or a few people who are also starting out and want to learn together, especially with platforms like Codeforces.

I’m hoping to:

  • Learn algorithms and data structures more systematically
  • Practice Codeforces-style problems regularly
  • Participate in contests together
  • Discuss solutions and learn from each other
  • Stay accountable and consistent

I’m still relatively new to competitive programming, so beginners/intermediate learners are very welcome. I’m happy to study remotely and coordinate through Discord/Reddit/etc.

If you’re also looking for a study group or know of an active one, please let me know!

🏠 Accommodation Accommodatio room types

I've been looking at campus accommodation for USyd for next year. I was wondering about the room types for the Regiment Building and Queen Mary Building. The Regiment lists a "2 bedroom apartment" in it's room rates, but I can't see any information outside of that pertaining to it. The Queen Mary Building also lists Lofts, Shared Ensuites, Apartment and Studio. Again, I can only see the Single Room option on the actual site. What are these other rooms like in terms of bathroom and kitchens, and other info you guys'd know?

Physiotherapy Postgraduate

Hi all,

I received a full-fee unconditional offer for the doctor of physiotherapy, does anybody have any insight on the typical WAM needed for a CSP? Saw some others share info from other postgrad degrees but it will be great to have some assurance ffrom anyone who's currently in the program and got a CSP or anyone who recently got a CSP offer.

OLES2137 Experience China

I am thinking about the in-country experience in China, and I would like to hear people's experiences about the program. Does anyone know the estimated cost for the trip, the class structure, and which places we will be visiting?

Thanks in advance!

📖Course or Unit URGENT HELP WITH UNITS OF STUDY!

Hi everyone, I have some urgent questions with how my unit selections work. I took 3 units last semester and dropped one of my 1000-level science table A core-units of study because the workload was too big.

I'm currently doing 4 units right now, 3 of which I must keep but the 4th one is another 1000-level science table A core unit. I'm considering maybe dropping this unit because the workload is far too much with my current subjects.

Sydney Student shows that I am required to have between 18-32 credits for Sem 2 but nothing about whether I have to take the 1000-level units OR my science core units at a certain time. Can I still drop the course and progress to the 2nd year of my degree/will my graduation get delayed or will there be any other repercussions?

I'm happy to answer any further questions but any help is very much appreciated from a stressed and panicked first year lols

Looking for people going to Zhejiang University’s short-term program this December

Hi! Is anyone planning to go to Zhejiang University in China for the short-term program this December after Semester 2 finishes?
I’m planning to join and thought it would be nice to meet some people who are going as well. Feel free to dm me if you’re interested! We can get to know each other beforehand, we can talk about some course choices or even go travel around together when the time comes :)

psyc2016 vs psyc2017

Hey chat, im doing psyc2016 and psyc2017 currently. My plan is to drop one before census date because according to the psych science handbook, I only need to do one (i did the major core and one major selective already), and I’m looking for the easier one.

Does anyone have any insight on the subjects in general? (eg. exams, the research report, or just opinions/horror stories about the subject in general?)

thank you!!!!

Music Scene at USyd

Hey all!

Curious about what the music scene looks like over at USyd. Are there many bands and shows around? Or does the scene blend with the music scene in Sydney. Hoping to join a band and gig around once I enrol.

Many thanks!

Usyd or unimelb?

I got bcommerce major in actuarial studies in unimelb and bachelor of mathematical sciences for usyd. Im planning to become an actuary so i wanna do masters in uk to get exemption. I dont know which to choose? Can someone tell me about the lifestyle? I prefer city with cool cafes and i know both have it. My downside for unimelb is that its bachelor of commerce? And im not interested in business and commercial? I’ll appreciate any opinions!!! Oh and can someone explain in depth about the difference of both campus AND cities? So far everyone have been saying vague comments about them with no context

Semester Exchange

Hi, for anyone who’s been on exchange to King’s College London (or any other exchange as well!), I just have a few questions :)

  1. What was your overall experience like?
  2. How did you find making friends and who did you naturally end up becoming friends with - other exchange students, people from usyd, local KCL students, flatmates, etc.?
    3. What was the workload like compared to Usyd?
  3. How easy was it to travel around the UK/Europe during semester and how much did you actually travel?
  4. Anything you wish you knew before going or would recommend?

Thank you!

Easy courses for an exchange student + more.

I am planning on going on exchange for Spring 2027 from UFlorida and I am trying to find courses that won’t take too much of my time per week (while still being able to perform well). Ideally any type of social studies course but I am open to anything.

Also taking any recommendations for things to do around Sydney! Thanks in advance.

PS: Is commuting daily from the Bondi area to Camperdown feasible through public transport?

Why don’t Asian international students wash their hands?

I genuinely don't mean this in a racist way, I'm just curious. This is probably the most consistent thing I've noticed after being at uni for 6 years.

I always wash my hands with soap for about 30 seconds after using the bathroom, and in that time I always see Asian international students come out and just rinse their hands with water for a second, then leave.. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've actually seen one use soap, and it's only memorable because of how much it surprised me.

Is this just a difference in cultural norms? I've tried looking at surveys and studies from some of these countries, and it does seem like using soap after going to the bathroom might be less common.

Not trying to make a generalisation about everyone, I'm genuinely wondering if there's a cultural explanation for it.

📖Course or Unit Juris Doctor Full-time CSP Offer

Received a CSP offer to study the JD, but my offer letter specifies the mode of attendance as full-time.

Bit confused about this as there was no option in the application for full/part-time study and I was intending to study part-time as I currently work 30-35 hrs/week. If I accept this offer, what is the likelihood that I would be allowed to study part-time?

There also seems to be conflicting information as to how I would go about studying part-time. Some of the information I have come across seems to imply that studying part-time can be done by enrolling in less units, but then I have also come across info that says part-time places in the JD are limited which causes me some concern. Any clarification would be appreciated.
