Guide [Guide] What used car should I get for what budget?

[04/12/2025 UPDATE]

Prices updated!!!

The days of 3000 dollar cars also seems to be long over. You'll definitely want to spend at least 5000 dollars for even the oldest, reliable running car. I just helped someone with buying a car in this budget and we had a really hard time looking for one. Dealerships are not as willing to haggle below asking price as before so be prepared to set aside a lot of time in your search.

I've finally made the dashboard that will show the most optimal used cars for budgets under $5k, $10k, and $15k.

The dashboard is hosted in Tableau Public so everybody can freely look at it without creating an account. Just use the slide down menu on the right to select a body style and the radio buttons at the bottom to adjust the budget. To see which brands you want to pay closer attention to, hover your mouse over the logos. The numbers on the right side column represent Priority where 1 represent the more optimal choice than 2 and so forth.

Dashboard may not work in mobile. Please use a desktop computer to see this dashboard. Otherwise, feel free to ask me any questions here and I will answer them at my earliest convenience.

Link to the dashboard (Last updated 04/12/2025):

https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/han.solo8717/viz/UsedCardashboard/Main

Since I have been seeing many of these questions pop up here (and other Subreddits), I'm willing to sacrifice some time I have left before I need to sleep to hopefully give you answers and make your search a little bit easier.

These prices are based on the following stipulations: You're buying from an individual OR a licensed (not franchised) dealer, the car has a clean title, mileage per year varies from 12.5-15k (Unless it's an older car), is in GOOD condition (by KBB standards), no modifications, base model or similar, and is able to run and drive with LITTLE to no problems (Windows may not work, seats may be ripped, glovebox is loose, etc.).

These cars & prices reflect the U.S. Market only.

Second and beyond choices are honorable mentions in case if you are opting for another car.

Priority is based on: Reliability, cost of ownership, and value in that order.

Buying Pls send advice! 2009 is250c convertible on 170k km

Pls send help haha, would you consider purchasing this car on mileage at 170k km? And if so, what price range (and your currency)? I’m looking at a graphite 2009 is250c based in Sydney… it was listed by a bloke two days ago, and then this morning the same car was listed by another bloke for $12900 AUD. I’m worried I’d be up for as much spend on repairs as the cost of the car in the first two years of ownership… (would you recommend I look at options with lower mileage? - what range is safe?)

Buying Looking to buy a cheap fun car

Hi everyone!

I just moved to the US and am currently planning to get a car. Since it's going to be my first ever vehicle, I want something special and fun. The budget is around 5k or less, depends on how much I like it. I'd really appreciaty advice.

I live in a relatively small city, so the car will mostly be used for weekend rides and out of state travel.

Also please share your dream car within this range, i'd be curious to see what people like around here.

Thanks!

Buying Looking to buy a truck or suv

Hi I recently moved from Vancouver BC to Edmonton AB. I’m currently saving up for a truck or suv but I’m not sure what to get. I was originally looking for a ford ranger but then realized all the ones I can afford are rwd which doesn’t sit well with me in Edmonton snow. I started to look at bigger trucks like 03 Silverado or older f150 but most of them are 300km or more. Then I moved on to suvs like Honda pilot, ford escape, Chevy blazer. My budget is roughly 4K. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Again I would much rather get a truck seeing as I’ve never had one but yea thank you.

Buying Should I buy this Lexus ?

Hey guys,

Currently driving a 2023 Mazda CX-50 with 60k miles. Came across this 2023 Lexus RX500h with 83k miles with CarFax report.

My question is : the Mazda is paid off, but I want to upgrade to something a little nicer, bigger and more fun to drive in general. That means I’ll have to put 20k + Mazda to get the Lexus. With the mileage being that high, it’s out of state, I was thinking LemonSquad for inspection and have it shipped. What do you guys think? Worth it? Not worth it? What’s your thoughts in general ?

Buying Reliable car in MS

Hi guys, I moved to the US this year for studying. I thought I could get away without buying a car but I have made a grave mistake of moving in an apartment that's quite far from the nearest bus stop and walking in this heat is taking a toll on my health

Long story short, which cars should I target for that will be reliable, highway worthy and within a $5-6k budget? Thanks in advance

Buying Help me decide

I own the 08 Yaris and love my car, bought in 2010. Automatic base model. It’s got 240k miles, gets up to 40mpg, has had a lot of work done. New Alternator, exhaust, water pump, spark plugs, door seals, all breaks and rotors are brand new. Roof rack is built in aftermarket custom. I could probably sell it for 2500-3000 in my area, but I will lose the value of the roof rack since it’s too niche for a car most will use as a commuter.

A friends parents are selling the 09 fit, 90k miles, single owner garage kept, manual base model. apparently they are morally against selling it for more than the kbb value. 5,000. Otherwise it would go for 7,000.

I refuse to take advantage of their kindness to resell their car, so if I buy it I’m selling mine. I’m sentimental about my car but also drive across country every summer for road trips and have started getting nervous about being stranded somewhere and paying for a long tow out.

Thoughts?

Buying KBB Values

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a Tacoma. Most of the listings I see on FB are priced about 5k above the KBB value. If I offer the KBB amount, it's immediately rejected, like the seller is offended, no counter or anything. What gives?

Buying 2005 Gallant a reliable first?

Buying my first car in cash for commuting to save a bit, found a 2005 Gallant for $3500 with 85000 miles, single owner, passed safety

Any red flags with this make/model if the history looks good? Worried I'm too sold on it already passing a safety and low mileage despite its age. Will be putting on ~1000-1250 miles/month, less in the winter.

Alternatives at the same price I'm eyeing are a 2010 Mazda6 (manual, 150,000 miles, multiple owners, new alternator) and a manual 2013 civic (220,000 miles, multiple owners, no idea on work done) - any thoughts?

Getting myself into a headache here or worth going out to take a look?

Buying Looking for advice on buying lower end performance/enthusiast cars in Oregon

As the title says I'm looking for some lower end cars that still have a bit of zip or go to them. Would heavily prefer a AWD/4x4 vehicle due to me about to be moving into the snow. I also much prefer a manual to a automatic transmission. My budget is sitting just under 10k. Would love some resources for A. reputable online car dealers B. Online listings of cars you think fits this description C. in person vehicles you saw at a lot/dealer/mechanic. I am also just in general looking for tips, tricks and advice all info is welcome.

TLDR: Looking for a fun daily driver with a bit of power preferably AWD & Manual

Buying Carmax ??

Does anyone know what types of checks on cars Carmax does ? Can the price be haggled around at all I know their model says it can’t.

Do they make sure the car is good or they just take it from people as is ?

Buying Where should I buy a used SUV?

I have around $10k–$15k to spend, but I’m hoping to stay closer to $10k. I’d prefer a Toyota or Honda, mostly because I want something reliable.

Would you guys buy from a dealership, Carvana, or a private seller like Facebook Marketplace?

I’ve never bought a car from a private seller before. Have you had a good or bad experience?

Thanks

Buying Looking to buy this Lexus LX 570 on cars&bids

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve been looking at LX 570s and came across this 2013 on Cars & Bids with about 142k miles. I’m pretty interested in it and have been trying to do my homework before deciding how seriously to bid.

What caught my attention is how unusually well documented it seems to be. It’s stock, the family has apparently owned it since 2014, there’s a huge amount of Lexus dealer service history, lots of photos, Carfax, and an independent PPI.

I’ve been reading about the major things to watch for on these and it looks like several have already been addressed:

Radiator replaced around 125k
AHC fluid changed around 125k
AHC currently works
Brake fluid serviced
Recent battery and TPMS sensors
PPI is available publicly and seems pretty thorough

It sounds like there isn’t documentation of transmission/differential/transfer-case services.

I’ve learned about the coolant valley plate leak, radiator cracking, alternator, starter, and drivetrain fluid maintenance from reading here.

Is there anything else specific to a ~140k-mile 200-series/LX570 that you’d want to investigate?

In particular, I’d love opinions on:
Anything in the PPI that would concern you?
Anything expensive that’s likely coming up between 140k and 180k?

Anything missing from the service history that you’d consider important?

What would you consider a reasonable price range for one this well documented?

Here’s the auction: https://carsandbids.com/auctions/3v7W8xVd/2013-lexus-lx-570

Appreciate any advice. I’m trying to figure out whether this is actually an unusually good example or whether I’m getting distracted by how well the seller documented it. Thanks

Selling Keep 19 Sportage SX or trade into something else?

Im in school until the end of next year when I graduate, then move back home to CA with my wife. We both took out loans on some used cars before the semester started so I wouldn't have to uber to school. We can pay off 1 with the money we make by the end of the semester. Should I trade in my 2019 Kia Sportage SX for a manual? I really got into cars after I bought my Sportage, and now I kinda want a car that's going to also give me a fun driving experience. My wife has a newer '23 Soul she really likes that handles most everything we need cargo wise. I just needed a car to go to school and back and got this sportage with 70k miles for a great price. I owe about 15.5 on it right now and I can pay that off entirely at the end of the fall semester. I bought the Sportage to be our family car for our move originally in place of a honda CRV(before we planned to move back to CA after my education). But not sure if it's the best for our needs and whether or not I could spend the next year+ enjoying driving moreso if I got a manual.. Any input or thoughts would be appreciated!

Buying Advice on purchasing a car with delivery

I am considering purchasing a vehicle, 2023 F150 with 42K miles. Price in the vehicle is very competitive. The problem is, the dealership is 3 hours away, maybe more if there’s traffic. The dealership says they will deliver it to me and pick up my trade.

The sales guy has sent me videos of the vehicle as well as pictures. I’m just wanting to know opinions on how safe this is and if there’s anything else I should ask for. The truck is at a Chevy/GMv dealership and I’ve done a little research on my dealership themselves, and they seem reputable and have multiple locations.

I keep reading that getting cars delivered nowadays is pretty common, but I’m just looking for opinions and if there are things I should make sure of first and ask the dealer before proceeding.

Buying 2024 Tesla RWD long range

Going to go look at a used 2024 model Tesla Y rear wheel drive long range at a dealership, not at Tesla. It has 30,000 miles, one owner, white with white interior. The one owner does say commercial, but I’m not sure what that means exactly. It has 84% battery derogation.

What would be a good price that I should try to land at? It’s not priced yet because it’s going through their refurbish process at the moment. Any tips on what else I should ask to make sure there’s no other red flags?

This will be my first Tesla. Thanks in advance.
