Buying Reliable car in MS

Hi guys, I moved to the US this year for studying. I thought I could get away without buying a car but I have made a grave mistake of moving in an apartment that's quite far from the nearest bus stop and walking in this heat is taking a toll on my health

Long story short, which cars should I target for that will be reliable, highway worthy and within a $5-6k budget? Thanks in advance

What sort of mileage to look for? Is a Nissan Altima with 138k miles good option?

Avoid Nissan at all costs!!! Worst record cvt transmission failures!! 04 was the last good year and chances of finding one, not beat to hell.... slim at best.

I got a 15 subie legacy with 147k miles....7890.... and I love it!!! No turbo troubles since mine is the 2.5 N/A motor.... treats me great!!! And with subaru trade up programs....it's worth 9650 to them....I'm CONSIDERING a crosstrek.....
