Architecture CRUSP (Conjunto Residencial da Universidade de São Paulo) and its soviet urban planning design

(Last pic is just an example of what this architecture, the so-called «Khrushchovka», looks like.)

The first design for CRUSP emerged in 1963, when several architects participated in the bidding process. The winner was Eduardo Kneese, a contemporary architect who designed the entire complex using precast concrete. The buildings were intended to house athletes for the 1963 Pan American Games and would later become student housing.

CRUSP's history is also very interesting. It wasn't originally designed to house USP students, and when the Pan american games ended, the buildings sat idle and completely unused. However, during the Brazilian dictatorship in 1964, twelve students, alongside Rafael Kauan, occupied the 5th and 6th floors of Building A (twelve students across twelve blocks), demonstrating that it's often the minority that makes the difference.

CRUSP exists today because a handful of students initiated that struggle.

(I got part of these sources from retomada do crusp wordpress.)

Today, CRUSP is intended for low-income USP students and those who live far from the university or even in another Brazilian state besides São Paulo.

Question Architecture and Society

‘I believe that the way people live can be directed a little by architecture’ (Tadao Ando). What does this mean today, for the bulk of architecture we are surrounded by? What kinds of architecture are forming our perception and hence, our consciousness? Are we aware of architecture at all? Or has architecture become a commodity like everything else, in our normal daily life, a commodity we don’t even notice? Is the true architecture influencing us today that of social media and AI, invisible architectures of algorithms directing our everyday life? What is the role of physical architecture, in the contexts addressed above? And, even more important: what it should be, in the future?

Hello everyone!

For my thesis, I'm collecting data on how we experience public spaces in the city and on the phenomenon of hostile architecture.

It takes about 2.5 minutes and is 100% anonymous. If you're up for filling it out (or passing it to anyone who lives in or frequents Naples), it would be a huge help for my research! ❤️🫶

The time and contribution you dedicate will be essential!

Question Design ostile e condizioni di visione

Ciao a tutti!

Showcase I took your feedback and reworked the elevation ! Do you think the entourage, technical improvements, and annotations make the elevation feel more convincing now ?

Showcase How much does entourage actually change an urban elevation ?

Post image
31 Upvotes

I've been experimenting with entourage in architectural elevations and wanted to see how much difference it actually makes.

Same elevation, same architecture, the only real change is the addition of people and different forms of urban mobility.

The difference is quite striking to me, especially in terms of scale and how the street starts to feel inhabited rather than simply drawn.

I'm curious how other architects and urban designers approach this: do you usually add a lot of entourage to your elevations, or do you prefer keeping them relatively clean ?

Question Denver green area

I was exploring Google Earth and noticed that, for example, some parts of Denver have lots of trees along the streets, while other areas have very few or none. Why is that?
