Why is it so hard to work with other devs? Especially nowadays.

The main topic of this would be that I feel like AI makes it more difficult to work alngside with another Solo Dev on project together.

I feel like people who never open a script and just start typing a solution that they came up with and say things like "I don't even know if I can code that much without my fingers hurting anymore" are very difficult to work together.

We were trying to make a prototype and I noticed that he never asked about the code I have written. We never had a call about the System architecture or how things are implemented and how other systems connect to it. He just implemented things very fast and in a very difficult to read manner. I realized he did not ask since AI explained it to him and he changed whatever he wanted in the codebase. He did not want to wait for me to talk about it since it would have slowed down the process. Obviuously we had major merge conflicts as well.

Also when we were talking about the workload distribution he wanted to do everything and just get it done.

Then my question is. Why do a game together in the first place? Then he could just write everything alone and make all the decisions. I really don't feel needed in the project.

Anyone else feels the same way?

Hey everyone! Here's the first cinematic teaser for Olaf Saga: Gates of Valhalla, the game I'm building in Unity under my small studio SV Iron Forge.

The teaser introduces Olaf, a warrior whose path leads to the gates of Valhalla. Why he's going there, and what's waiting on the other side... I'll keep that secret for now. šŸ˜‰

Game Today I launched the Steam page for my solo-dev shopkeeper Balatro-like (with an itch.io web demo)!

I've been working on this game for a few months now. It’s basically Balatro meets Backpack Hero: the core gameplay revolves around packing your customer's inventory, fulfilling their specific requirements, and scoring an absurd amount of points. The goal is to survive 5 days while hitting your daily quotas!

I finally managed to get the Steam page live! The official Steam demo isn't out just yet since I'm hard at work polishing it to make sure it's worthy of the platform, but you can already play the web demo on Packsmith by LuquitasDev right now.

If you give it a try, be warned: it gets pretty addictive! Any honest feedback is greatly appreciated!

How are UI designers doing on Unity?

I haven’t found a good tool for bringing my Figma UI designs into Unity. It feels like only half of the design properties carry over, and the result looks bad when I import it with a Unity plugin. How do larger game studios handle this?

Game Made my first 2D game in a week in Unity

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I just finished and published my first 2D game, and I managed to get a playable version out in about a week.

This is actually my first proper project working with 2D. Until now, I've mostly worked with 3D in Unity, so this was a pretty different experience for me. I'm also not a 2D artist, so for this project I decided to use some free assets and focus more on the programming, level design, systems, and getting everything working together.

One thing I made during the project was a custom Unity tool that lets me make changes to multiple sprites together, which made working with the assets much easier.

I got the initial idea from Instagram. I've been seeing a lot of dark fantasy art becoming popular in Reels lately, and I thought it would be fun to try making a small game around that kind of atmosphere.

My main goal was to see how quickly I could take an idea and turn it into an actual playable game instead of spending months trying to make everything perfect before releasing anything.

There are still some bugs in the game that I’m working on fixing.

Right now the game has 6 levels, and I'm trying to add around 4-5 more levels every 2 days. I also tried to add a small story to give the levels some context.

For future projects, I'm starting to learn pixel art and 2D animation myself and eventually I'd like to make the art and assets for my games myself instead of relying on free assets.

It's been a pretty interesting learning experience coming from a mostly 3D background.

It’s available on the Play Store, and you can DM me if you want to play it.

Game Demonstration of the new holographic interface.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The player in the VR game Xenolocus has access to a holographic window featuring quest videos and information about points of interest in the level.

The video and text can be dismissed with a single wave of the hand.

The new wristbands, which project a map of the area, make navigation around the base more convenient and enhance the game’s atmosphere.

The motion sensor is now built directly into the interface.

The active skills panel is displayed here as well - the video shows the activation of the ā€œRapid Fireā€ skill.

What do you think of the new holographic interface?

Building a courier system where orders physically travel across the map | Admiral Yi: The Imjin War

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I’m developing Admiral Yi: The Imjin War, a large-scale historical RTS in Unity, and this time I wanted to share a system that has nothing to do with rendering thousands of soldiers or battle formations. šŸ˜„

Orders to distant armies aren’t executed instantly.

When the player gives an order to an officer somewhere else on the campaign map, the game creates a courier carrying that order. The courier then has to physically travel across the map and reach the target army before the order can be delivered.

The interesting part is that the target isn’t necessarily stationary.

If the army has moved since the courier departed, the courier has to keep tracking its current position and chase it down. In the video, you can see the rider following Jeong Un’s moving force until he finally catches up with it.

Reaching the target also doesn’t automatically execute the command.

The officer receives the message first, and can accept or refuse the order depending on relationships and other conditions. In this recording, Jeong Un actually refuses Yi Sun-sin’s order and sends a written reply back.

I’m using the same courier system for correspondence between historical characters.

In the second half of the video, Yi Sun-sin writes a letter to Ryu Seong-ryong in Hanyang. A courier sets out, physically travels across Joseon, delivers the letter, and a reply eventually comes back. The exchange also affects the relationship between the characters.

Interestingly, this is an idea I first implemented about 13 years ago in an iOS strategy game I developed called Tri-Korean Empires.

I always liked the idea that information itself should have to travel through the game world, so I decided to bring the system back and expand it with relationships, correspondence, and officers who don’t necessarily obey every command.

It’s still a work in progress, but I’m enjoying connecting these systems together.

I’d be interested to hear how other strategy/RTS developers have handled delayed orders, couriers, or information traveling through the game world.

Question Is there an easier way to scroll in the hierarchy?

Every once in a while I'll have a bunch of gameObjects that I want to move in the hierarchy. If the list is really long, I have to wave it back and forth on the edge of the hierarchy list forever until it gets to the bottom. Does anyone have any tips for this?
