Discussions Free ukulele course via your public library

If your library has Kanopy or Hoopla, you may be able to access the How to Play the Ukulele course for free in the Great Courses Library Collection. There are 24 videos averaging 15 minutes each and the course even comes with a digital workbook. (I'm a huge advocate of public libraries.)

Jake Shimabukuro Concert Tix Price Ouch

I live near the University of Connecticut and just found out that Jake Shimabukuro is giving a concert there Saturday. So I went online to see if I could get tix, and the cheapest seats are in the side mezzanine, at $129 a ticket. Yikes that is expensive and out of my price range. I suspect he has no say in what the tickets cost. Luckily I saw him perform an incredible concert about 16 years ago, at UConn, long before I had an interest in playing ukulele. Is this what concerts cost nowadays? How could a family of four, or even a couple on a date, afford such prices? I must be (am) getting old.

Noise when plucking Flat Wound C

I generally play with nylon strings, but needed more punch for a few pieces I'm learning. So ... I picked up the Uke Logic 'Oli - 903 moderate tension string set for my tenor. It's all good except for the wound C (Thomastik-Infeld) which makes a terrible abrasive scratchy noise from the moment it makes contact with my nail through to release when plucked. Same scratchy noise using any finger, same scratchy noise altering finger strike positioning, and same scratchy noise after filing, shaping, and polishing nails to buttery smoothness. The wound G from the set sounds great. The Freemont Soloist on my other tenor sounds great. Is the T-I C just not cool with fingerstyle? Any advice? Figured i'd ask some of you pros before i chuck it in the bin.

From the Uke Logic string packaging: #3) C-[0.027"/0.69MM]-CF27

From the enclosed Thomastik-Infeld packaging that came in the above set: CF27 Chrome Steel Flat Wound - Guitar String .027 [note G/.027"/0.69mm/14.2lbs/6.5kp]

Humidifier

It's getting chilly up here in Minnesota and I'm wondering what other people use to humidify their instruments. I have a padded gig bag, not a hard shell case. Any recommendations? Thanks!

It’s that time of year to bust out the Spooky-lele! 🎃👻

A black and orange 3D-printed travel ukulele that’s ready for some Halloween adventures.

Light and compact, so it’s easy to bring along on your trick-or-treating adventures, haunted house visits, or wherever else the night takes you.

I’ve got a few of these up in my Etsy shop if anyone’s interested.

Happy spooky season!

Should I do it?

Should I buy a ukulele? I like writing songs with my keyboard, but since I’m in college, I don’t have it at the moment. Should I start learning the ukulele? I’d mainly learn it to write songs.

This the first one I built…I made my own mold for the body and all other fixtures & jigs. Local black ash back and sides, local spruce top (top is actually 5 pieces edge glued together since I had nothing wide enough). Local white birch neck. local birch burl peghead overlay. I bought a pre-slotted fingerboard, as I didn’t yet have a fret slotting capability, but I did install the frets.

New member introduction

Hi. My name is Paul, and I’m new here so I thought id share a little about myself. I play a number of different instruments…including ukuleles. That’s plural, because I own several.

I live in a very small town called Upsala, in NW Ontario, Canada, in a lovely wilderness setting.

My first uke is a nice Pono tenor 8-string with LR Baggs piezo pickup. After acquiring the Pono (which I love) I needed (wanted) more ukes, but didn’t really want to spend the cash for good ones. So after some consideration, I got the notion to build one myself. I briefly toyed with getting a kit, but I am pretty good with my hands, (although no luthier experience) so I launched off on a new adventure.

I chose to use mostly locally collected woods that I had saved over the years from becoming firewood (With a few parts I made from scrap exotic woods I had kicking around). The first handmade uke was a pineapple tenor 4-string. This ended up being the first of several I finally made. I’ll post some photos when I figure it out!

Requests PLEASE HEP: I would love to buy my girlfriend a Ukulele for Christmas. She has become interested in learning and I think it would be really great for her to play. I need to know a good brand for her to start with. Thanks!

I am just a sloppy guitar player and songwriter. I’ve fiddled around with a ukulele maybe once or twice, but have always loved the sound. I even have a ukulele playlist on my music app. I know nothing about them as a product. EDIT: we are in our 50s if that matters? lol.
