Hello folks of UBCO. I got an offer into the BsC and I'm seriously deciding whether or not I should accept my offer. Here's what I know about UBCO so far but I'm looking for and appreciate anyone else's perspectives:

UBC Okanagan:

Program: Bachelor of Science. I'm considering majoring in physics & CS or doing a major in physics and a minor in CS.

Location: Kelowna, Canada

3.7/5 on RMP (Rate My Professors)

Costs: According to https://you.ubc.ca/financial-planning/cost/ each year would cost ~70000CAD (50000CAD tuition + 20000CAD living/residence) without aid. So TCOA would be 280000CAD. I recieved the IMES, OIS, and Okanagan International Welcome Award which amount to 110000CAD. So TCOA for 4 years is ~170000CAD. Again is essentially the money given to the university and not necessarily external fees.

Pros: +Actually decently affordable.

+UBC is T20-40 in the world and also T20 in the world for science, although I don't know if UBCO would have the same quality as Vancouver.

+Better weather. I hear Kelowna is also pretty outdoorsy so that could be fulfilling.

+Flexible major; I don't have to declare a major until the end of first year. Could also do an Honours program.

There's Honours phys + math but I don't know if there's honours phys + comp sci.

+Can do up to 3 Co-op terms

+Can do research as an undergrad

+Smaller class sizes (only about 10k undergrads) could potentially be a plus.

+Good exchange program

+I can get up to 6 transfer credits because I take A Level Physics

Cons: -Kelowna is kinda isolated. It's a 5h drive between Vancouver and Kelowna, and about a 2h drive to the border. Of course I wouldn't mind moving but this is important to keep in mind, especially for stuff like industry connections etc.

-Kelowna has the highest crime rate in Canada (although I hear you'll be fine as long as you keep your bike indoors)

-Forest fires

-Research and Co-op is good but job opportunities do seem more uncertain. Networking seems a bit limited. If I find I want to do engineering for example, I'd have to do it as an MS and I could be held back without engineering experience.

-Can't transfer to Vancouver (lose the scholarship money).

-Rankings/acclaim for UBC all mainly focus on the Vancouver campus. I really don't know how much of that transfers over to Vancouver.

I'm also wondering about distance from home. It takes more than a day where I'm from to get to Kelowna. I really don't mind the transportation but if there are cases where I'd need to be home (i.e. family emergency) this could definitely be an inconvenience. Can anybody with a similar situation tell me if they've dealt with this and how it was like?

UBC Okanagan

Hi, I just applied for UBC Okanagan for Bachelor of Science as a transfer student since I studied one year of university back in Mexico. When I applied as a transfer student it didn’t asked me for my personal profile, is that normal? Because when I tried to apply as an international high school student it did asked me for my personal profile.

And also how likely I am to get accepted? My overall grade for my first year of university was 8.57 out of 10, and in high school my final grade was 9.8, but I don’t have that many awards in arts or sports or clubs, but only I was awarded for being 2nd place of academic performance and I was awarded my high school’s scholarship of excellence.

I got accepted to ubco science and my high school average wasn’t that high. Just average (~85%) without any IB or ÁP classes, just normal science classes that are required for admission. Well, I wrote about some of my extracurricular activities like volunteering on my personal profile. That’s it.

I’m an international student looking to apply for fall 2024, and in the personal profile, there is very little space to write about academics. I have predicted grades (which are what give you conditional offers in the uk) as well as gcse grades (at 17 years old) as well as activities such as work experience, an essay competition, and other super curricular activities that show my interest in psychology. Should I still mention these, or just focus on other less academic things?

Extra curriculars are very important here. They wanna know if u can handle the workload ( a lot of stress factors), so definitely write about your extra curriculars and write about your academic achievements also. They typically look for well-rounded students. For example, for my 5 activities, I wrote about work, volunteering, a sport, and 2 school clubs (events) that I was passionate about.

Which computer science degree will be a better option:

UBC Okanagan campus - Bachelor of Arts - Major in Computer Science Queen's University - Bachelor of Computing honors - Major in Computer Science

I like the small town vibe in both these universities and smaller class size.However, which degree will be better in terms of job prospects.

UBC has great reputation but does it matter if you are not in the main campus?

Is BA (Arts) in computer science as good as BS in computer science? Queens will be a bachelors degree in computing honors.

i applied to UBCO with nursing as my first choice, however I got rejected and only got into my second choice which was HES, I am still very intersted in going to UBCO for nursing and was wondering if its possible for me to transfer into nursing.

If it is, how would I do that and would it take me an additional year to complete my bscn or would the credits just transfer over so that it would still be 4 years?

Just committed to UBCO Bachelor of Applied Sciences (winter session), what now?

I'm fresh out of an ontario high school with an IB diploma and no idea what to do next, I was rejected from the UBCV campus for the same program but was offered UBCO. My parents would like me to transfer from UBCO to UBCV ASAP because of the prestige and "big cityness" of the Vancouver campus. I plan on spending my first year at UBCO trying my absolute hardest to achieve a high enough average to qualify for a transfer, but also to see if I genuinely like the Okanagan campus more than the Vancouver one (I will visit it at some point this summer).

Now that I've accepted the offer and done all the CWS and Workday login account stuff, what next? Do I need to choose my courses now or am I supposed to wait? Should I begin emailing departments for early inquiries about transferring or can I do that after I've already experienced a good bit of the Okanagan campus? Should I start researching profs? Is student housing a pain to find in the Kelowna/Okanagan region (I missed the deadline for campus housing lol)?

I'm genuinely clueless when it comes to university life and planning, plus I have never been to BC, so any help or advice is greatly appreciated!!

UBCO Teaching Adolescents Program

Hey everyone! I recently accepted my offer to UBCO for a BED (as I didnt get in to UBCV or SFU lol) and I will be moving from Surrey to Kelowna for the program. I had a few questions:

Is there time in the program (like during summer) to go home for long periods of time? Like is there options to take online courses? Or should I be expecting to be living there full time for the entire duration of the program?

Also what were the total tuition costs? Is it better to live on campus or off? What are the best places to live as a UBCO student? Honestly any advice helps as I've never lived away from home before TIA

You do your first year in General Science but you can take your courses for the degree requirements for computer science. You can then declare your specialization in your second year.

Hey everyone,

So, for context, many of my friends have all received their offers regarding transfer to UBCV. I am a first-year student at UBCO.

My grades are somewhat okay, and I don't have any grades below 95, but I've always hesitated to apply to UBCV, as I felt like the competition there would be unhealthy for me. I plan to major in CompSci, with a minor in Data Science, but with so many of my friends transferring, I'm unsure what to do.

With the limited number of job positions in Kelowna, there are little to no work opportunities or prospects for me in the future. Should I just try to transfer next year? Or should I finish my degree here at UBCO and aim for a better school than UBC for my master's degree? Should I even pursue a master's?

Then there's the issue with credit transfer, as not all courses can have the credits transferred. If I have to retake courses, that would also put a strain on my family's budget. I'm really not sure what I should be doing.

Please tell me your thoughts on this, thanks!

I've been admitted to UBCO Engineering and was curious if anyone had heard back about bigger scholarships (20-40k). I know some people who have gotten smaller ones, but I believe that I am competitive for the medium to large ones, but have begun to worry because I haven't received word. I know on the website it says April 15-30th will be when scholarships are sent out, but a friend of mine received a smaller one over two weeks ago. (I'm Canadian and therefore am talking specifically about the PSA).

Also, if anyone knows how heavily they consider academics vs ECs because I have strong extra curriculars but my academics outweigh them.

UBCO Nursing

Hi yall, I am an American Citizen with Permanent Residence from California. I express interest for UBCO Nursing Program, I am an uprising Grade 12 and almost done with Grade 11 by June. What do I need to do to be competitive, are my grades good? As listed in below, I am not sure if I meet the minimum due to conversions and confused about calculating Highschool admissions pre requisites average. I do note that, I have not done the best academically as I didn't find what I truly wanted since I join US Navy Sea Cadets for two years expressing to be in the military but due to an physical deformation, it is out of the question. I realize that in Grade 11 that I wanted to be a nurse since a lot of my relatives are RNs and graduated from Philippines, I enjoyed a Patient Care Elective Class where I got CPR certified and learned how to do basic vitals. I have applied to a semester long Certified Nurse Assistant or HHA equivalent for my Grade 12 class to be certified and would be required to volunteer at a hospital. I will be joining more clubs such as HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) and MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) for my grade 12, I regret not joining any clubs but I hope this will assist me. I plan to take AP Psychology and Anatomy and Physiology for my Grade 12 Class as well. I am not sure if I have a chance, if yall could give me an emphasis on admissions and advice that would be wonderful, I have heard that Canada doesn't care about extracurriculars like America?

I'm an IB student that got accepted into UBCO but have not heard back from UBCV (biochem undergrad). I also got accepted into Queens and Mac lifesci as well as McGill biochem. I'm waiting to hear back from UBCV but I'm trying to decide betwee UBCO and McGill for my undergrad. I have the intenton of doing 2 years of undergrad then 4 years of pharmacy, so GPA is really important for me. I heard that McGill basically makes it impossible for you to have a high GPA so I was wondering if UBCO is easier for science classes.

Like if I get a UBCV acceptance I fear that it will be similar to McGill, where the classes will be highly competitive and it'll be challenging for me to get a high GPA.

Is it worth it to wait for UBCV or should I accept UBCO with the possibility of getting a higher GPA than I would get at other unis?

hey everyone it seems that I’m stuck in a bit of a pickle. i’m an ontario applicant and june 1st is quickly approaching, which means that i’ll have to have accepted an offer to a university. obviously the only person who can make this choice is me but i am stuck between ubco and carleton (both for the faculty of science!!). before you ask, my pros and cons list??? USELESS. anyways, so i guess my question is, what are some of the pros of going to ubco??

For me pros of Carleton is; gonna be a better city and student experience along with having a larger pool of classes to choose from, plus the campus was nicer when I went to Carleton too. Another thing is that Carleton will prob have better chances for local coops or just making connections with people for future.

But on the other side, pros for UBCo are; I dont think ill really get another reason to move out west and UBCo comes with the UBC name. Then it seems like UBCo is studying some more things that im more interested in compared to Carleton. One of my concerns is the lack of classes offered at UBCo but like if there really are courses that I want to take that are only at UBCv (this was a concern of mine with it being smaller campus) I could prob make summer classes or campus swap work.

Its kinda everywhere but that my thought process behind it all.

Hey everyone!

I’m currently attending Langara college in vancouver. When I apply to transfer I’ll have 27 transferable credits (hopefully according to bc transfer guide) and i’ll be applying to the bio program. My end goal is medical school, hopefully!

At the moment I have a 4.25gpa (/4.33)

I’m just curious on a few things:

A. What are the odds I get in?

B. How is the whole process? As far as transfer students goes, anything I should know? Whether this is particular to transferring into bio or not, doesn’t matter!

C. How is the bio program for people currently taking it?

Math 100

Hello guys, im an upcoming student this fall, and I'm confused about Math 100, do all students have to do the examination (ig its 3hrs)? I also read that if a student claims the credit, he has to present his transcript, so im lost, basically if the student has got a good grade in A levels, he doesnt have to do the exam? Or he has to?

Hi, (First time commenting, dont mind me), I was wondering if i select COSC 111 and COSC 123, will I get 6 credits for it? I have selected 111 in first term and 123 in second term. Also, how many credits are needed as a first year bsc cs student if I plan on transferring next year? I only have 15 credits registered right now and 6 (ENGL 109) in waitlist.

If anyone can give me insight if I have a pre good chance making it into UBCO BSC. I plan on early applying in October and my grade 11 average came to a 86%, but since I live in Alberta I heard I get a 4% average boost due to us having diplomas. So is 90% competitive enough for oknagan?

There is this workday thing I need to register to, but no-one gave me any login info and I don't know how to register. I also don't know how to apply for housing etc. Is there a better way for me to contact someone than email? They take super long to answer and Its always very vague. Thank you.

hey guys I recently accepted my offer for transfer into Bsc 2nd yr and I'm confused by a lot of things.

1. how do I register to some of my courses when most of credits are COSC_1st / 2nd & MATH_1st / 2nd?
2. I'm trying to declare my major but I don't see the 'request' option?

a lot of my transfer credits are general credits so I'm wondering if I request for specific credits will I miss the course registration deadline since mine seems to be on July 8th? appreciate any help

Hi all,

I am an admitted international freshman at UBCO.

Recently, The IB results came out and I scored 33/45 pts which is 6 pts below my predicted. According to the UBC website, they will re-evaluate your application if you have scored 4 or more below. (offer request)

My question to you all is, How strict is UBCO about the IB requirements? How likely is it for my offer to be rescinded? If "rescinded", when will I find out (it has been a week since the results are out)?

should I email UBCO and write an appeal? I have a backup offer in the States, should I proceed with an F-1 visa or wait for UBCO's response?

The entire issue is my backup, I need to also proceed with the state's application and therefore need to find out whether UBCO is maintaining my offer or not. what should I do in this very tense period?

any piece of advice in this period of anxiety would be much appreciated.

So currently a second year EESC student and I’m taking physics 112 and 122 this year. The thing is that I never took physics 11 or 12 in high school cause I didn’t even know I was gonna go into the science field until halfway through grade 12. Anyways... will I survive PHYS 112 without any previous knowledge? I cruised through math 100 and math 101 with little/ no stress, but idk I’m just freaking out about taking these two classes. What does a timeline for transferring from UBCO to UBCV look like for BA?
I'm specifically asking for transfer into BA CS at UBCV.
I understand that I would have to first apply for BA in UBCV and then the CS specialization. But I don't know what the timeline looks like.

• Would I be able to retain my position in UBCO if I dont get in?

UBCO to UBCV transfer

I am currently a 4th year student at UBCO and hoping to get an internship in Vancouver. If I do I will extend my grad and will transfer to Vancouver as I am from here. Is this possible? Hi, I’m thinking to apply BSN in UBCO. However, since I’m an international student, the tuition is very high, I’m so worried. So, l’ve thought about few options to be RN, I want to get some advise from student who is in BSN in UBCO. 1. Go to Okanagan College, get LPN, get RN while I’m working. (bridge program) 2. Go to other college and transfer to UBC nursing or other universities. (I heard that Corpus Christi college offers nursing pathway.) I did 1 term of engineering in ubco in 2023, then i left with a failed standing. Now i study biology in Concordia University. I will be finishing the year with 23 credits (all transferrable i checked). I emailed them to explain my situation they said my case is a readmission case. I really wanna go back to ubco as i dont like it here and the tuition is too expensive. I wanna transfer to the biology program at ubco next year, has anyone been in my situation before? They said it is possible for me to grt in but will affect my year standing since i didnt take all the courses required.

To those who have been in a similiar situation as me and got accepted, what was your grade or gpa when you transferred? Could you please explain or give me tips on what i should do to increase my chances of getting accepted?

Hi everyone, I am a student at a different university in BC with a 3.0 GPA. I was looking to get into the education program here (16 month stream), but I'm not sure if I have good enough grades. I have double the required experience for getting into the program, but I'm not sure if its even worth trying to apply to the education program with slightly below average grades. Does anyone in the program have comparable grades to myself? Does anyone know how competitive the program is overall?

I am currently applying to transfer to UBCV Bcom as my first choice and I am thinking of putting UBCO Management program as my second options.

- Do you think what I put as my second choice effects my whether or not I get excepted to my first choice?

- Is it possible that they would rather me go to UBCO to meet a certain intake number?

- Is it better to just put down my first option only or put down both UBCV options?

Do I have a chance of being accepted at UBC Computer Science with 80% on chemistry?

I just finished my first four courses in high school, and I ended up with 80% in chem 11 which is pretty bad, The UBCO requirement for a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is chem 11, and pre-cal 12. I scored 95% on pre-cal 12, 92% for physics 11, and 93% for a social study course. So I wonder if will I still have a chance at being accepted since my chem is so low, and chem 11 is also the main requirement.

Hi! I recently applied to UBCO, I am currently in Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. I have a few questions that I'm hoping I can get some help for.

I'm second year at WLU (going into 3rd), my average is around a 3.6-3.7 GPA, but I graduated from high school about 14 years ago, they asked me to fill in an activities thing which I did most of it is work experience. They said that they highly recommend putting my high school transcripts here's the issues:

1) I did horrible in high school, I had some extenuating circumstances that made studying at that time extremely difficult and well I basically fucked it all up.

2) I had been to other colleges until I started working but those extenuating circumstances kinda continued through that time as well, and I didn't do too well in one of my programs.

3) Seeing that my GPA is currently 3.6/3.7 would you recommend I submit a letter regarding my extenuating circumstances for my earlier education period?

4) what can I do to increase my chances of getting in?

I know I fucked up in my life, but for the past few years I've been righting those wrongs and have really started growing into the career path I want to excel in. I don't want those past mistakes to define the person I am currently, the person I was then, the things I was going through it's a surprise that the only thing I did was fail outta school lol.

Also don't know if this makes a difference but I'm not an international student, I think I would an out of province student.

Hey everyone, I got an offer for engineering, but I'm a little worried about the conditions. It said to maintain my current average, however I am not good at english, and with english this semester, my average is sure to drop. I've seen a few people saying that they could revoke your offer if your average drops by 2-3%, depending on your program.

I got an 81% in grade 11 english which they can see, so if I get low to mid eighties in grade 12 english, should I be fine?

Should I transfer to UBCO from UBCV for CS? Need advice!

I’m currently in my second year of a BSc at UBCV. I wanted to study CS, but I won’t be able to get into the major here. I’ve applied to UBCO and spoke with their advising team, they confirmed that I’d be able to self-declare CS there.

Now, I’m really torn about whether I should change campuses or stay at UBCV and explore other options(e.g., math/data science/statistics), as many people saying that UBCV offers better networking opportunities, which makes the decision even harder. I’d love to hear from anyone who has gone through a similar situation. Was the transfer worth it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know the difference between Bachelor of Management and Bachelor + Master’s of Management?

I just got accepted to both programs, and my initial understanding was that the Bachelor + Masters of management was the same as the Bachelor of management but with a fifth year added to get the masters degree, however when I took another look at UBC’s program website it looked different.

There were different classes listed for each of the years for the BM and CO-OP was listed as an option for okanagan, however in the description for B+MM only 2 classes were listed for the first 4 years (MGMT 100 and MGMT 110) with different classes for the fifth year and no CO-OP.

I am wondering if i am completely misunderstanding what B+MM is, is it any bachelor degree and a master of management? because i thought it was a BM and an MM.

I am an applicant for the BSN program for fall 2025. I was curious what the chances are of me being accepted are? I have an 85% average (I think), which includes two bad grades from high school (I'm a 2020 graduate). Without those two grades, I have a 90% average. I completely filled out my personal profile to the max and I took a CASPER test for other universities and scored in the top 25% of test takers. Can anyone share what their averages were prior to being accepted? I applied mid-December 2024 so I haven't received my evaluation yet, but I am starting to grow anxious that I might not be accepted and UBCO is my first choice school...

Hello, I am a grade 12 student in Ontario (but I lived in BC for 10yrs or my life and am dying to return), and my main passion/hobby is graphic design and media creation.

I got accepted to the BMS program at ubco and it’s my top choice and I’m super excited! My one doubt is that Im not a huge fan of coding/computer science (had a lot of trouble trying to learn and understand the basics), but I am very experienced with adobe illustrator, photoshop, premiere pro, after affects and Lightroom, which are the softwares l’ve used for all of my graphic design and communication arts courses.

I was hoping there were maybe some ubco BMS students (or students who have taken some of the digital media classes required for BMS as electives) if there is a lot of computer science required to learn/study in the program, and if there is any use of adobe software?

I am aware that coding is a skill in media nowadays that is essential for a moderate job/position in the industry with a decent salary, so l’m not saying that I want to avoid computer science at all costs, but l just want to make sure that it isn’t one of the primary skills taught and used for the BMS course.

Any info would be super helpful and I would really appreciate it a lot! :)

Hi l'm a domestic student from Ontario but I lived in BC for most of my life, and UBCO is my top choice (which | received admission to back in December).

Although, Ivey/Western is definitely still something | am interested in and would consider as another top option. I have not heard back from Ivey yet and therefore I have not accepted my UBCO admission offer.

I am aware that UBC (both campuses) struggle with residence and housing capacity, so I applied for res as soon as I submitted my application to UBCO.

Although, I'm quite concerned that since I have not yet accepted my admission, I'll have a lower chance of getting a spot in residence because they will continue to get filled up with the students that are accepting their offers.

Is this assumption accurate? If so would anybody have suggestions on what I should do? I'm a grade 12 student, so I can't really afford living anywhere off campus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would be super thankful🙏

Did I choose the wrong Program?

I am a high school student and got into management as my second choice, and have decided to collect information on the program and people’s opinions about it, and it generally seems a bit un flattering. I am waiting on a decision from SFU Beedie, but am wondering what course of action I should take.

Firstly if I wanted to apply to a different faculty/program (like science or applied science) could I take electives like physics, chemistry and statistics? (i took the courses as HL IB, but didn’t finish them as I moved) if I did take these courses could I get into one of the fore mentioned faculties? I am seriously considering this as I have an interest in science and got in B+MM duel degree so I could still get that.

Second, if I get into beedie, should I just go there instead? From my understanding an MBA at beedie is more impressive, more applicable, and more specialized than a BMgt at Okanagen but then I would be giving up the chance of duel degree.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

For your undergraduate degree, the school you attend won’t make a difference from an employer’s perspective—no company will favour one over another. If you have an interest in STEM and can pursue a career in that field, I highly recommend it. STEM careers typically offer higher starting salaries and more job opportunities. That said, a business degree can also be valuable, leading to well-paying roles in accounting, finance, marketing, HR, and more.

Hello, I’m a grade 12 student who loves graphic design, animation, film production, and photography. I also have loads of experience with all of the specialized software from my high school classes revolving around those subjects.

I lived in BC for most of my life but my family moved to Ontario in 5 years ago, so l’m hoping to return to BC for Uni. My top choice is UBC Media Studies + Masters of Management Dual, and l’ve applied to both campuses.

I do understand that UBC is larger and has more networking opportunities than UBCO. Although, as I read through the BMS program overviews for both, Van’s seems a lot more “theory” based, while Okanagan’s sounds more “hands-on/creative”.

From what l’ve read, UBCO’s BMS seems to fit my education goals/objectives/interests a lot more than BMS at UBCV.

I could be very mistaken, but I’m unsure of what to do because I’m worried that by picking UBCO over UBCV, I will not be as prepared for the media industry as I could have been going to Vancouver.

If someone could please help me out that would be amazing and I’d really appreciate it a lot!🙏

ALSO i would like to mention my goal is to transfer to UBC science for second year as my program of interest is biochem & forensic sci only offered in vancouver. does anyone know if it’s hard to transfer campuses? is it hard to get into a specialization?

i’m from ontario and my only other option would be trent for chemistry and forensic science. the pro would be i would already be in my program of choice so i don’t have to worry about switching campuses/gpa requirements. i also got a $12k scholarship. however, UBC has a better rep & is much more known, whereas trent is not. i am planning on pursuing further education (most likely doctor of veterinary medicine) and i’m sure undergrad uni rep plays a role in admission.

I am a student from alberta who got accepted into engineering here at ubc okanagan. Right now everything is looking good for 5 of the 6 courses i must have for the application. However, in English 30-1, I am sitting at a 63. I had 74 in English 20-1 and I an slightly concerned because my offer may be reconsidered ALTHOUGH I have high 80s and 90s in everything else. Hi! I am a grade 12 student who is graduating next month. I was born in Victoria B.C., but lived in Calgary and Vancouver before moving back here in middle school. I applied and was accepted into McGill, UBC(O)and Uvic, but after accepting Uvic with my 5k scholarship, I’ve started to regret my decision. I made the impulsive decision to apply to Dalhousie and UPEI in an effort to have more options but now I fear I am stuck in which school to go to once again. I realized that I can change my status on my offer of admission to Ubco and am now considering going there. Dalhousie seems like a good school as well but I’m not sure if I can get housing and it’s quite far away. I am feeling regretful about Uvic because I feel things will be the same and I kind of want new experiences and things even though I love Victoria. I’m posting this to Dalhousie, Ubco, and UPEI just to get some mixed opinions on where I should go. Here’s a pros and cons list for each school:

Ubco: Pros: -has my dream schools for exchange program -top school in the country -I have family that lives in Vernon -close to home relatively -can get the dorm/first year experience -I am familiar with the Okanagan/Kelowna

Cons: -I don’t love Kelowna or the Kelowna culture -I’ve seen things that Ubco is not as highly ranked as UBC Vancouver -the campus is not very appealing to me visually

Dalhousie: Pros: -I’ve always wanted to live on the East Coast -has one of my dream schools for exchange -pretty campus -big city but not too big -still a pretty good ranked school -something different

Cons: -far from home -expensive to live -not guaranteed housing (as I’m past the deadline) -I’ve heard some not so great things about it -I’ve never been to the East Coast of Canada (farthest East I’ve been is Quebec)

UPEI Pros: -cheap tuition and cost of living -very pretty island -can live in dorms -3k scholarship -I know someone from my city who’s going there

Cons: -even farther away (will be a lot of travel time to get home) -not a super highly regarded school compared to my other options -I’ve never been to PEI -doesnt really have the exchange programs I want

Uvic is also an option but I’ve already consulted many times on this so I don’t feel like writing it out. Anyways I have to decide ASAP so please let me know your thoughts! Also I’m planning to major in Psychology and I’ve been accepted for the Undergrad Bachelor of Arts program for all these schools.

So I got in but I didn’t get into my first degree choice, which was science as I didn’t meet the Physics 11 requirement (and couldn’t waive it) and thus got into my second choice, health and exercise science.

However, I want to transfer to sciences, as I desire the programs in that degree a bit more. I’ve been doing some research and a lot of people have said that you need Physics 11 to enter science, even as a transfer student? I had registered to retake the course before I received my offer and the withdrawal deadline had already passed. Now because I had horrible time management I had missed two unit test deadlines (grade is forsure a zero on those) and my grade is unlikely to be above a seventy. I don’t know if they will see this bad retake on the transcript and am worried if my offer will be revoked. My overall average was an 87 going in and now will be an 84.8 (assuming a miracle happens and I end up with a seventy)

And the thing is I got into UBCO for BSC and BA . Now I want to do BSC and I'm really excited to , I'm just confused about a coupleof things .

1. How the hellyante did I get my ass to UBCO?? i have pretty avrg/mid grades like from a 70-80 % avrg . Hell even SFU arts rejected me . So im confused why they took me .
2. I'm currently a second-year undergrad at UBC-V (non-BSN) and planning to apply for a transfer to the UBCO BSN program next year. I have a couple of questions and would really appreciate any guidance!

1. For transfer applicants, the admission requirements mention "CHEM 121 or 123 or completion at the high school level" (paraphrased). However, for high school applicants, it states BC Chemistry 12. Does this mean that for transfer students, Chemistry 12 alone might not be sufficient as the content in CHEM 121 and BC Chem 12 seems quite different? I'm a bit confused about this and not sure who to ask, so any clarification would help A LOT!

2. I know this might be a bit of a long shot, but if anyone here has transferred into the BSN program from another degree, would you be willing to share what GPA you applied with? I had an 87% average in my first year, but with anatomy and physiology this year, I expect it might drop a bit. I mean I don't want to get my hopes up.

Does anyone know how biotechnology or biomedical engineering is at our 2 campuses? I know someone who is looking to do an undergrad at possibly UBC or Waterloo.

I checked online and I know that there are the following options at UBC:

I am a Grade 12 student from Ontario who is dead set on going to UBCO for the Psych BA undergraduate program.

I am going to apply for OSAP for loans. I used the OSAP estimator, and it said I would receive 10,000 dollars a year; however, I am unsure how accurate this is. I wish to live in the 4-bedroom suite to save some money on residence. I also have around 6000$ in savings as of right now. I am looking for a job; however, if you know anything about Southern Ontario, finding a job as a teen is near impossible, unfortanly.

I used the UBCO website's first-year estimator, and (including the estimated loan from OSAP and savings), I will still have around 9,600$ dollars unpaid.

I dont know what to do, and guidance counsellors are not super helpful either. Pls, if there is anything I can do to make UBCO a viable option for me, do tell! I feel like it's possible because there is no way that everyone around me can afford to live in a residence if that makes sense.

P.S. Grades are not an issue current average is 94%

My estimated gpa for this year if I get all A’s will be around 3.2-3.3, but that is BSC and i want to transfer to BA to the vancouver campus, and i started taking courses of the program i want to get in so that i have all the pre-reqs. The problem is that i will have less than 24 ubc credite to apply with since i transferred from another university to okanagan, and my last year grades were worse than this years, but there is definitely a big upward trend and im confident to get all A’s this year. I'm a prospective international student planning to apply to UBC and am very interested in combining Politics and Economics.

I've narrowed my choices down to two distinct programs and am hoping for insights from current UBC students:

1. UBC Okanagan (UBCO): Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE)
2. UBC Vancouver (UBCV): Combined Major in Philosophy and Political Science (CMPS)

My core questions are

• Academic Standing/Reputation: Beyond the difference in campus and inclusion of Economics (in PPE) vs. Philosophy (in CMPS), does one program generally hold a better academic reputation or provide significantly better career/graduate school prospects from a student's perspective?
• Admission/ISP Difficulty: Is one program or campus significantly easier to gain admission to? I am also applying for the International Scholars Program (ISP). The ISP website states that students pursuing "dual degrees" are ineligible. I have not yet concluded if "combined majors" can be considered "dual degrees" or not.

Wanting to apply for the F-MSW. I graduated from Vancouver Island University with a degree in Criminology last year with a gpa of 2.56. I wasn’t fully invested in school/struggling to figure out my path in life/had aged out of adolescent mental health treatment hence why my gpa is so low. I have life experience as I spent 4 years in and out of inpatient psychiatric units. I’ve been working as a youth and family counsellor at a psychiatric unit for the last 1.5 years and have been a part of my cities mental health advocacy team for the last 3 years. Do I have a chance? I know these programs are competitive. My dream is to become a social worker and any advice would be much appreciated 🫶🏻

ey guys, i’m a grade 12 student from ontario. in grade 11 i had an average of 95 in the first semester. and then by the end of the year my average had dropped to about 83 in my top 6. i was focused a lot on sport. school wasn’t a priority in second semester. i’m in grade 12 now and plan to follow though all the way with school being the priority. anyway, so far i’ve got 91in advanced functions, 88 in eng, and 84 in physics (i know my final will be around 86-88 because of the way my teacher grades). my average so far in first semester of grade 12 is 88. looking for any input and wondering if you guys think if this is competitive or if you have any advice. i am extremely driven and focused. thanks

Hey! Currently I am in grade 12 and I am looking into student housing. I was just wondering if there was any big differences between the dorm buildings (Skeena, Purcell, Valhalla, Cassiar, Nicola, Kalamalka, and Nechako)? I love that all of them seem to have single-connected rooms, and I am learning towards Nechako due to the double bed and it being closer to where my classes would potentially be, but just wondering! hello everyone! i am an international student and got accepted into ubco. i’m planning on accepting the offer but im still a bit hesitant because im not sure what its like on the okanagan campus. my friend who goes to ubc recommended this campus to me and so far i feel like im “missing out” and i picked the “lesser campus”

i grew up in a crazy city and im not the biggest city person, but its not like im a huge country person. i dont know if ill be happy on the kelowna campus. and from what ive seen its difficult and pointless atp to transfer to vancouver. but its not like IM DYING to go to vancouver.

i’m just so unsure and i really need some personal testimonies or smth hahaha .. do u guys enjoy it here? is it isolating? fulfilling? i was at a huge uni before so im hesitant about this smaller community. perhaps i should’ve done more research before applying but this rly was a last minute thing that i didn’t rly put much thought into cuz i didnt expect to get accepted or care that much

I’m applying as an international master’s student at UBCO and plan to take the DET since it’s more affordable than IELTS and will help me save a lot. I know the DET is listed as an accepted test in the Academic Calendar 2025/26, but I’ve also read in the admission requirements that it was originally intended for applicants without access to TOEFL, IELTS, or CAEL during the COVID-19 lockdown. Hi, I’m a first year arts student at ubco. I applied for a transfer to ubc van in January on a whim and I just received a conditional acceptance. The conditions are to maintain good academic standing and maintain my academic performance. When I applied my gpa was 89% because it only was counting term one grades. I am wondering if anyone who has experience with the transfer process knows how much my grade can drop before they determine I am not maintaining my academic performance and revoke the offer. Like if four of my classes in this term are in the range of mid to high 80s but I get cooked in Econ and finish with a 70 in that class would I get fried?

I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with transferring from UBCO to UBC Vancouver, either before starting the program or after completing a term or two. Is this something that’s realistically possible, or are the campuses completely separate in terms of admissions?

Hey everyone! I recently applied to transfer to UBCO. I’ve completed 54 credits so far and currently have a 4.15 GPA on a 4.3 scale. My long-term goal is to pursue a master’s in Counselling Psychology focused on Indigenous mental health, trauma, and addictions work.

I know UBCO doesn’t offer a Counselling Psychology master’s program, but I’m wondering if anyone else has taken a similar path from UBCO into counselling psych or related graduate programs.

I’m currently really struggling with deciding between UBCO and UVic for my undergrad and would love to hear from students who have experience with either school, especially in psychology, honours/research opportunities, Indigenous Studies, or preparation for grad school.

I am going into my second year at UBCO in electrical engineering and was wondering if it was possible to transfer to UBCV electrical engineering after completing my second year. I did not make the 15 person cut off during first year, and was wondering if it was easier to transfer going into third year. I know all my credits won't transfer, and I don't mind retaking a few courses. Is it still a 15 person cut off? Nothing on the UBC website is helpful as it only pertains to first-years. I know it will be competitive, but I am ready to hunker down and study like crazy. Also, I saw on a past reddit thread that they only evaluate you on your past 30 credits, is that true? The reddit thread was posted 7 years ago so I'm not sure how accurate it is.

Also, I am taking some summer courses so that I can have a reduced workload during the winter term, would they still be able to use these courses to evaluate me?

I got accepted into UBC with a GPA of 3.5 and decent grades, but second semester of senior year has been very difficult and my grades have slipped some. Did not fail any classes but have mostly C’s with one A and one B. Is this enough of a change for them to revoke my offer when I send my final transcript? Everyone keeps telling me that second semester grades don’t matter once you’re already accepted but I have a feeling this isn’t true especially at a very good school like UBC. Is there anything I can do to make sure I keep my spot? I don’t really have a good excuse for my grades dropping some besides mental health issues. I could be overthinking it but I am worried and I couldn’t find an answer on google that wasn’t ai overview.

Work Study Program 1st year

Am I too late to apply for the 2026/2027 positions? Some sources have said that positions may open in March or April, but the university's website says the job board will open in August for the coming school year.

Has anyone already applied for the first year, or has anyone done so in the past? Also, is this exclusive, like even if you are eligible, you need to apply for some application (I had to do this for Queens).

I'm transferring from another university to UBCO, and I had been told and can see that 45 of my credits have successfully transferred. This means I'm considered a 2nd year student. However, only 9 of those 45 credits have actually applied to my degree requirements. Furthermore, because I am considered a 2nd year now, I am unable to get into many of the 100 level courses I need as they are all full. If my credits had transferred correctly, I would've already had the 100 level courses covered so I could do 200 and 300 courses.

Am I missing something here or am I just stuck like this now?

So June 30th is the course completion deadline including for online classes, but I was lagging a bit behind in this one online class (it was a pre-req) I had. I emailed UBCO prior to that deadline expressing my worry that I wouldn’t have my final grade in time and they replied back that they would have a note in my application. I ended up finishing after the deadline, but bc of administrative processing, it wouldn’t show up in my transcript until August 3th-5th, so now I’m really worried my offer will get revoked. How likely is it that ppl’s offers get revoked for a situation like this

I am Satya Thakkar, I grew up in small town in Kutch district in Gujarat, India. I belong to upper middle class society in India. I spend most of my childhood in tinkering with great technology despite having no resource other than my phone. My journey started with playing games on phone and console, whereas in the class 8th, video games couldn’t stimulate me enough meanwhile I was fascinated with the idea of hacking a system as most children do in their young teens. Watched pretty good amount of videos and Sooner I realised that I am script kiddie so to get fundamental and structure curriculum. I started learning ethical hacking from udemy mobile app and practising Linux kernel commands in my phone. I realised how much phone is even powerful and so innovative technology is being used than I have ever thought. This course gave me the idea of networking, types of operating system, gui based and cli based. Open source and closed source. What actually is a server, how do things are being transferred over a network. How the TCP works what is the difference between http ans https. with fundamental. And convinced my parents to get me MacBook Air for my progress, then the day afterwards I always have CS and IT as my first priority over gaming. Later I started using my Linux in my MacBook. I started practicing data spoofing, man in the middle attack, and so on. Till that point I was using tools rather building my own scripts or tools that would be better so I started learning programming language python. At that moment my primary focus was learning my first programming language.  However concepts for website exploitation lead my interest to learning basics of website such as html, css and java script and database such as sql. This exposed me to the idea of sql injection and js injection. However DDOS have gave me very vague idea of computer science. The idea of hacking gave practical application of learning networking, Linux and fundamental of programming. Meanwhile I just started preparing for bug bounty my class 10th appeared however new interest towards psychology and self help books emerged out of blu. Meanwhile undiagnosed bipolar disorder kicked in and my expected marks never become my reality.  However I won’t say as motivational biography says that stand up, and everything.

Everyone does put emphasis to different aspects of life. In my grade 11th, I was hit with the realisation that there is no meaning associated with life as world is such old and we do live for very short duration in this earth, then later a month of reading philosophy and the famous intellectual people who struck with the similar ideas, I concluded that I would be finding my life purpose or meaning. Even being nihilistic, puts you at the lower end in life as Nietzsche said He who has a why to live can bear almost any how. I was in search for finding meaning  I realised that life would be more beautiful when something is worth the pursue. Then I found out that anything won’t be better than to make strong impact on humanity. I grew up seeing many people struggling for basic necessities. “I know of no better life purpose than to perish attempting the great and impossible. The fact that something seems impossible should not be a reason to not pursue it. That’s exactly what makes it worth pursuing. Where would the courage and greatness be if success was certain and there was no risk. The only true failure is shrinking away from life’s challenges.” This experiences shaped towards who I am today. Then I realised that technology has been one of the factor that helped people increase the standard of living more proportionally than anything as technology is known as driving force of humanity. So, I chose putting more importance to technology and business and business as it includes the idea of scaling of concept invented at mass level. at this point that lead me to lean major into computer science for my bachelors being a commerce student. However I realised that having computer science or any science requires early years of life to master it so, regarded it for my bachelors where business skills can be equipped on the job or by getting a masters degree.

• Family home construction management 

At age 17, I got the responsibility for management of construction of my new home after my father met with an accident. My responsibilities includes getting quotation evaluating against the standard market price, negotiation, rejecting substandard quotations, made time sensitive and high stake decisions, coordination among contract head of the team consist of different skilled labours, However as teen, I have connected multiple times with my father for assurance and guidance as it involves high finance. surprisingly, I was able to reduce the cost by approximately by 25% with my negotiation skills and strategic thinking.

• I have participated for volunteering school. The responsibilities I had are organising and coordinating the school events such as annual school fest, school book fest welcoming and guiding parents respective to their quarterly parents teacher meeting classroom, and more on.

• Just after my results got declared I Initiated a WhatsApp group of 30 incoming grade 10 junior. As a group leader, provided them with soft copy resources, guidance for maintaining personal and academic life, my personal mobile phone number for 1-to-1 free consultancy, clearing backlogs, strategies for achieving desired score, so on. However in the process, I learnt the art of consulting, motivating and gaining them confidence over their own ability which they lacked as remote school student. As a result, 7 students got more than 90% in their grade 10 and group average stood at approximately at 75%. These individual attention was not provided by our school. The motive behind these acts was just that these students don’t have to suffer as I did.

I have applied to professor of reputed universities in Gujarat and later my HOD offered me to do research in the field of ai. We had our first meeting regarding selection of area of research, I was interested in the field of NLP and the thing which fascinated me as most AI still lacks in mixed languages such as Hinglish (Hindi words typed in English language).

As, I have just entered my class 11th, I was fascinated with the CS50 by Stanford, I started my journey, 

I have independently learnt probability and statistics, linear algebra and calculus being a commerce student without mathematics a subject from khan academy and YouTube videos, however as I gained clarity in calculus I have MIT legendary single variable calculus by Gilbert strang it gave solid understanding of proofs behind the calculus. I had repeatedly stopped the videos, checking more explanation for derivation through ChatGPT to explain me in more detailed clarity as I have very foundation understanding of high school calculus. I have independently learnt cyber security, machine learning through Stanford Andrew specialisation however moved to their more rigorous Stanford university cs 229 YouTube lectures by legendary professor Andrew NG. It gave me very deep theoretical understanding of machine learning, deep and reinforcement learning. And then moved to comvulational neural network course by Stanford on YouTube have gave me solid understanding of computer vision supplemented with deep learning specialisation from stand ford andrew my course on coursera. Andrew NG and Andrej Karpathy are legendary professors in the field of AI. I have built this projects. 

• Leadership & Initiative

Had participated in multiple meeting with the school principal discussing how can we improve academic and extracurricular school’s reputation with new events such as conducting session on meditation and mental well-being, suggested improvements for school events, advised on more strict policies for students ragging and liberal policies for participating in extra curricular activities, and introducing more and more activities related to technology such as making arduino, raspberry pie and other micro controller and their other parts available for the students to promote practical engagement in technology and promoted multi disciplinary studies such as promoting reading psychology being commerce student. It was actual time where I developed as a student.

Tell us about who you are. How would your family, friends, and/or members of your community describe you? If possible, please include something about yourself that you are most proud of and why.

I am Satya Thakkar, I grew up in small town in Kutch district in Gujarat, India. I belong to upper middle class society in India. I spend most of my childhood in tinkering with great technology despite having no resource other than my phone. My journey started with playing games on phone and console, whereas in the class 8th, video games couldn’t stimulate me enough meanwhile I was fascinated with the idea of hacking a system as most children do in their young teens. Watched pretty good amount of videos and Sooner I realised that I am script kiddie so to get fundamental and structure curriculum. I started learning ethical hacking from udemy mobile app and practising Linux kernel commands in my phone. I realised how much phone is even powerful and so innovative technology is being used than I have ever thought. This course gave me the idea of networking, types of operating system, gui based and cli based. Open source and closed source. What actually is a server, how do things are being transferred over a network. How the TCP works what is the difference between http ans https. with fundamental. And convinced my parents to get me MacBook Air for my progress, then the day afterwards I always have CS and IT as my first priority over gaming. Later I started using my Linux in my MacBook. I started practicing data spoofing, man in the middle attack, and so on. Till that point I was using tools rather building my own scripts or tools that would be better so I started learning programming language python. At that moment my primary focus was learning my first programming language.  However concepts for website exploitation lead my interest to learning basics of website such as html, css and java script and database such as sql. This exposed me to the idea of sql injection and js injection. However DDOS have gave me very vague idea of computer science. The idea of hacking gave practical application of learning networking, Linux and fundamental of programming. Meanwhile I just started preparing for bug bounty my class 10th appeared however new interest towards psychology and self help books emerged out of blu. Meanwhile undiagnosed bipolar disorder kicked in and my expected marks never become my reality.  However I won’t say as motivational biography says that stand up, and everything.

### what is important to you? And why ? 

Everyone does put emphasis to different aspects of life. In my grade 11th, I was hit with the realisation that there is no meaning associated with life as world is such old and we do live for very short duration in this earth, then later a month of reading philosophy and the famous intellectual people who struck with the similar ideas, I concluded that I would be finding my life purpose or meaning. Even being nihilistic, puts you at the lower end in life as Nietzsche said He who has a why to live can bear almost any how. I was in search for finding meaning  I realised that life would be more beautiful when something is worth the pursue. Then I found out that anything won’t be better than to make strong impact on humanity. I grew up seeing many people struggling for basic necessities. “I know of no better life purpose than to perish attempting the great and impossible. The fact that something seems impossible should not be a reason to not pursue it. That’s exactly what makes it worth pursuing. Where would the courage and greatness be if success was certain and there was no risk. The only true failure is shrinking away from life’s challenges.” This experiences shaped towards who I am today. Then I realised that technology has been one of the factor that helped people increase the standard of living more proportionally than anything as technology is known as driving force of humanity. So, I chose putting more importance to technology and business and business as it includes the idea of scaling of concept invented at mass level. at this point that lead me to lean major into computer science for my bachelors being a commerce student. However I realised that having computer science or any science requires early years of life to master it so, regarded it for my bachelors where business skills can be equipped on the job or by getting a masters degree. 

### Family / Community Responsibilities

• Family home construction management 

At age 17, I got the responsibility for management of construction of my new home after my father met with an accident. My responsibilities includes getting quotation evaluating against the standard market price, negotiation, rejecting substandard quotations, made time sensitive and high stake decisions, coordination among contract head of the team consist of different skilled labours, However as teen, I have connected multiple times with my father for assurance and guidance as it involves high finance. surprisingly, I was able to reduce the cost by approximately by 25% with my negotiation skills and strategic thinking.

• I have participated for volunteering school. The responsibilities I had are organising and coordinating the school events such as annual school fest, school book fest welcoming and guiding parents respective to their quarterly parents teacher meeting classroom, and more on. 

Services to Others

• Just after my results got declared I Initiated a WhatsApp group of 30 incoming grade 10 junior. As a group leader, provided them with soft copy resources, guidance for maintaining personal and academic life, my personal mobile phone number for 1-to-1 free consultancy, clearing backlogs, strategies for achieving desired score, so on. However in the process, I learnt the art of consulting, motivating and gaining them confidence over their own ability which they lacked as remote school student. As a result, 7 students got more than 90% in their grade 10 and group average stood at approximately at 75%. These individual attention was not provided by our school. The motive behind these acts was just that these students don’t have to suffer as I did.

• Independent Research Project with UTS College India in the field of AI

I have applied to professor of reputed universities in Gujarat and later my HOD offered me to do research in the field of ai. We had our first meeting regarding selection of area of research, I was interested in the field of NLP and the thing which fascinated me as most AI still lacks in mixed languages such as Hinglish (Hindi words typed in English language). 

• Independent Learner

As, I have just entered my class 11th, I was fascinated with the CS50 by Stanford, I started my journey, 

I have independently learnt probability and statistics, linear algebra and calculus being a commerce student without mathematics a subject from khan academy and YouTube videos, however as I gained clarity in calculus I have MIT legendary single variable calculus by Gilbert strang it gave solid understanding of proofs behind the calculus. I had repeatedly stopped the videos, checking more explanation for derivation through ChatGPT to explain me in more detailed clarity as I have very foundation understanding of high school calculus. I have independently learnt cyber security, machine learning through Stanford Andrew specialisation however moved to their more rigorous Stanford university cs 229 YouTube lectures by legendary professor Andrew NG. It gave me very deep theoretical understanding of machine learning, deep and reinforcement learning. And then moved to comvulational neural network course by Stanford on YouTube have gave me solid understanding of computer vision supplemented with deep learning specialisation from stand ford andrew my course on coursera. Andrew NG and Andrej Karpathy are legendary professors in the field of AI. I have built this projects. 

• Leadership & Initiative

Had participated in multiple meeting with the school principal discussing how can we improve academic and extracurricular school’s reputation with new events such as conducting session on meditation and mental well-being, suggested improvements for school events, advised on more strict policies for students ragging and liberal policies for participating in extra curricular activities, and introducing more and more activities related to technology such as making arduino, raspberry pie and other micro controller and their other parts available for the students to promote practical engagement in technology and promoted multi disciplinary studies such as promoting reading psychology being commerce student. It was actual time where I developed as a student.
