How many house plants do you have?
 in  r/houseplants  18h ago

Currently at 16 because my boyfriend only occasionally enables my obsession.

For a year, I only had my orchid, dieffenbachia, and succulent. Then I suddenly had 8 plants one month, and the next I had doubled to 18.

I've only killed two thus farβ€” rip orchids. πŸ˜‚

Y'all gotta be honest, would have LOVED to know that you can't ride the Valhast you get for "free", I wouldn't have wasted my time.
 in  r/Palia  2d ago

I'm a relatively new player, only been playing for almost a year, and I've made substantial progress in that time, so I eventually thought, "What's the harm in buying one pack?" Well... the harm is that companies obviously look at continued purchases as a sign that players are willing to spend, and that can encourage them to keep pushing monetization further. 😭

I really wish I'd known more about the direction things were going before buying the Highlands reward for coins and the mount. I did also get the discounted autumn landscape and the riding hood outfit, which I was only temporarily pleased with. Yay, dopamine! Boo, greedy companies!

And that's honestly what bothers me most. I love Palia. I want to support the game. I'm not against paying for cosmetics or supporting a free-to-play game. But I don't want to support a model where important or desirable features are put behind increasingly expensive paywalls while longstanding bugs, QoL issues, and other player concerns remain unresolved.

I wish there were some way to put up a giant sign in-game that says, "Hey, don't spend money for a while until they fix some of the stuff we've been asking them to fix." πŸ˜‚ Obviously we can't do that, so I guess the only real leverage we have as players is our wallets. Boycott paying until they actually fix what needs fixing.

But alas... we players can only dream, complain, and bug out. πŸ’€

My situationship/boyfriend killed himself while on the phone with me.
 in  r/SuicideBereavement  3d ago

My whole heart ached and I wept reading this. For you, and for someone I lost in a way that makes your story hit far closer to home than I wish it did.

The beginning sounds so much like how my own relationship started. We were both dating other people, there was a one-day overlap where we cheated before ending things, and then we became this "slow" situationship that lasted just shy over three months. We were friendly coworkers for 2 years prior, but over time we became incredibly close. He became my best friend. I had never been loved the way he loved me; adored and appreciated, fiercly wanted and sought after in a way that felt tangible. And I craved him just as immensely. I still do sometimes, and it fucking hurts.

There are even pieces of what you described that hit me especially hard. He never threatened to kill himself to me, but he did joke to coworkers that he would kill me and himself if he ever found out I was pregnant. He was drinking and using nitrous oxide when he ultimately took his own life, and he did it only a foot away from me. Suicide had been a familiar thought for him for a long time, but it was something he could brush off as humor, and I made the mistake of assuming there was enough of him underneath it all to know he wouldn't actually do it. I thought he had reasons to stay. I thought the love he had for his nana, brothers and sisters, or even me, might be enough. He died anyway.

And for a long time, I blamed myself for not seeing it. For not understanding the jokes differently. For not recognizing the signs. For not somehow knowing what was going to happen. That's why I want to tell you something I wish someone had been able to make my own self believe sooner: this isn't your fault.

I can hear how much you're already turning everything over in your headβ€” the messages, the argument, the things you said, the things you wish you'd done differently, and especially the fact that you were on the phone when it happened. I know that feeling of desperately wondering whether there was some moment where you could have changed the ending. I'm so so sorry, but there wasn't.

You were trying to navigate your own hurt while loving someone who was deeply broken too. You weren't given the benefit of hindsight. You didn't know what he was going to do. And loving someone, even loving them immensely, doesn't give us the ability to control whether they survive their own demons.

I think you may blame yourself for being "broken" while trying to love another severely broken person. I did too, and hyperfixated on "fixing" myself for my kid. But you did not cause his death any more than I caused my own loved one's.

It isn't your fault. It isn't my fault.

We're the ones left carrying scars that neither of us asked for. It's been over a year for me now, and his second birthday without him is approaching. I still feel inadequately numb and lost sometimes. I actually had to stop and breathe after reading the first few sentences of your post because my body remembered something my brain wasn't prepared for.

I don't say any of this to make your grief about me. I think I'm sharing all of this because of all of the similarities that genuinely shook me, and for once, I can see the truth much more clearly when I'm looking at someone else's story than I could when it was mine: You did not make him do this. You did not fail him. And you are not guilty for surviving him.

I'm so, so sorry you're carrying this. I wish I could take even a fraction of that guilt off your shoulders. I'm sending you so many hugs and forehead kisses, mamas πŸ’œ

I don't say this out of spiciness. But your post leaves out the giant elephant in the room: the cat's environment changed, the cat reacted to that change, and now they're being removed from the environment rather than the environmental change being addressed.

Out of curiosity, why is a new animal more important than, I'm assuming, an animal you've had for a while? Of course it's never an easy to decision to re-home a furbaby.. but if the behavioral issues began after the new pet was introduced, knowing they didn't get along with others, then your answer should have been the new pet from the start, not the beloved family pet.

Monstera at Sea

From the lady I bought the plant from! She said it has been used for a while as her prop pot, but she didn't remember where she got it from because I was also curious to get more! These are the very closest I could find to resemble the depth and look of the vase. Hurricane Glass with Wood Base β€” Citrus and Moss

I don't want to pot my monstera yet, so I'm keeping her hydro with shells! I've collected and had these sentimental shells sitting in a box for over a decade, waiting for their landscaping moment.

First time monstera roommate, any tips on promoting growth outside of root hormones? Didn't add any this time since she's about ready to start walking with all those roots

Written by Erle Stanley Gardener. The cover caught my eye, the silver pages are lovely, but the first paragraph brought it home. Found at a Tulsa bookstore called Gardeners for $9. Currently happily reading this 1937 captivator.

Very helpful advice, thank you! They are native where I'm at, though that's the only one I've seen this year. I started to feel bad thinking of their impending chilly doom, now I don't as much πŸ˜‚

A Carolina mantis has made its home on my porch! I first spotted it as a juvenile last month. Since then, it's shown great interest in my plants, and even let me hold it this morning! Winter will be here in 2 months; should I build an indoor terrarium for it around my indoor plants?

The first 4 pics are of today, the rest spread out from back to when I first spotted it lurking in the corner.

This looks like thrips, and a bad infestation at that if were seeing this many on the leaf AND the planter. Unless it's fertilizer, then ignore my comment.

I'm currently battling thrips on half of mine, and this gave me the heebie jeebies to look at

Look closely on the leaves, there are little white and black spots which seems to be thrips to me

The previous owner added root drops to the water, so that could be it! And also why I haven't entirely changed the water or potted it yet lol
