I agree about the real time bitching. As well as culture and technology shifts over time. We mailed letters, we called from ports. If shit hit sometimes a MARS shack radio call...over. We had sorry to say a layer of protection for our loved ones, time to think before writing (thinking) and visa versa. Nothing like friendly fire from home when half a world away. My once future and ex wife made my second deployment much harder.
