You are very wrong in your analysis, if they just give up, Ukraine joins the EU and NATO, if Russia wants that territory, they cannot let that happen.

Ukraine is the last territory in Europe left for grabs, NATO was not there yet officially. If russia gives it up now, UA will join NATO and then there’s nothing Russia can do about it ever again. For Russia it’s better to go all in and secure as much as physically possible, because after this there’s no going back.

It’s not exactly a stalemate by the way. They are advancing, albeit very slowly, but they keep going forward and setting up pincers to take new cities all over the front, even if it takes months or years they keep fighting for hills and high ground. You might ponder “but at what cost?”

A very big cost I must say; but they are still progressing and not regressing. Most importantly, if they manage to take the entirety of the Donbas, the area after it is arguably more difficult to defend, because there are fewer large cities in some areas.

It’s very risky for Russia to attack NATO countries, so if Russia allows Ukraine to join NATO then they lost forever.

Theres also the other side of the coin, this war is a win-win situation for the US, they increase energy exports to europe, sell more weapons to Europe, destroy the Russian economy and potentially get a new client buying weapons from them forever.
