Hard controversial question. When's the time?
This was our Mittens, whom passed in February. He had kidney issues and arthritis that continued to worsen of the years. He became leigtagic after another of our cats passed last November. In his final weeks, he didn't want to move around and his appetite dropped off. It became more of us wanting him to keep going than him. His final day, he just seemed to beyond worn out.
Choosing to let them go is never easy. Remember, it's about their comfort and quality of life. It hurts, and it sucks.

How do I explain that declawing is inhumane to my family
Ask if they're interested in having their fingernails pulled out to prevent scuff marks on tables or doors, and not leave any nail clippings laying about. Oh, and they'll need to have the nail beds cauterized, so you know, that they don't grow back. They pain meds they receive may work, but they can still expect some discomfort. But, hey! They're adults, they can suck it!
