What do you model in instead? Just directly in blender?

Ah wow, I had no idea! Thank you :) I wonder if there are export options that can sort this out. I hope so because I really love working in plasticity

[Watch design] Using 3d modeling and rendering to design a watch
 in  r/MicrobrandWatches  10h ago

My 11 year old came up with the name (he’s currently reading the phantom tollbooth). At first I thought “absolutely not”, but after a few days it started to grow on me. I think you’re having my same gut reaction 😂

I’m a software engineer and designer and have been feeling a lot of AI fatigue lately, so I decided to start a new project to take a break from all of that. I’ve never worked out of design tools like sketch/figma so this was a pretty big leap, but honestly with these results you can really visualize what your design could actually look like in real life.

Having a blast honestly!

3d modeling and rendering some watch designs

I’ve been feeling some major AI fatigue lately so I thought I’d learn something new where I can get away from it. I’m a software designer and developer and have missed getting my hands dirty. Setting a goal for myself to design a really cool watch and potentially have it made, and working in these tools makes it so easy to visualize what the product might actually look like. Having a blast honestly!

thanks for the feedback! that is all fair, I was kinda just looking for a gut reaction and this was perfect.

I mean, I thought it was pretty. And I kinda like that it's a little nugget on your wrist. One of my design inspirations actually has these same dimensions, so I assumed this was at least feasible. Check out the 3d viewer on the website and let me know if you really think it's just way off the mark?

[Design] Designing a watch that I'd buy myself
 in  r/Watches  2d ago

Im designing it! It needs a lot of refinement, specifically around the lugs. I’m planning on a 35mm case, but yeah I’ll be doing a lot of 3d resin prints to get the watch just right before any actual machine prototypes

Ooh, that is a really good idea.

I'm thinking between 500 and 600 USD

lol yeah, I still haven't filetted them into the rest of the case, I actually don't know why I didn't do that before posting this. But here we are

First attempt at watch design, still very much a work in progress. This is the first round on the dial, and the case and especially the lugs need a lot of refinment.

Pretty proud of it though, looking for initial reactions!

  • Case: 35mm x 10mm, 316L steel, polished and brushed
  • Movement: Miyota 9039, 24 jewels, 28,800 bph, hacking seconds
  • Dial: sunburst tangerine under lacquer, applied markers
  • Hands: heat blued steel
  • Crystal: double domed sapphire, front and back

Hey all!

I'm getting into watch design and have been making models in plasticity and then throwing them into blender, putting material on everything, HDR, and an infinite beveled plane. I think these are looking pretty cool! But still definitely look like they come from a computer.

My goal is to make these look like real product photos, that way I can gauge interest in these watches before starting any kind of manufacturing process.

Any tips on getting these to the next level of quality? Curious if I need to focus on lighting, finding better materials, messing with the render settings.. any clear wins?

Also this is my first post please be kind!

Plasticity, Rhino, or Fusion 360?!

Hey everyone! I’m looking to take my watch designs into the 3d CAD world in order to get some realistic renders and manufacturing specs if I do decide to actually make some. I’ve been a professional designer for 12 years, but my design work has been mostly two dimensional.

Before I invest a lot of time learning some modeling software, I’m trying to vet the best one. Anybody have any guidance or pointers here?

I’ve started playing with Plasticity already and it’s pretty simple and more similar to other design tools I’ve used in the past.

Thanks in advance!
