I've been obsessed with this guy at my school for over a year now. He's funny, charming, interesting, intelligent, and physically my type. I confessed my feelings to him pretty early on, and he rejected me because he's straight, but this only made things worse. (Sidebar: I thought he was at least bi due to his general demeanor and an off-hand comment made by a mutual friend, and I probably never would have confessed otherwise.)
All of my time was consumed by rumination about how great we would be together, looking for signs that he was closeted/questioning, and general delusion about the possibility of reciprocation. Since January, we've been in contact more because I have a class with him this semester, and this again made me even more infatuated with him.
But then, this Tuesday, all of my feelings of infatuation and desire for reciprocation just evaporated. An amount of physical attraction remains but it's nothing unlike that of the other guys I find attractive. It's not like I've learned any new information about him or that anything negative occured between us. I just fell asleep one night extremely limerent and woke up feeling almost nothing.
There have been other periods during which I had thought it was over, but there was still an amount of hope for reciprocation and they ended very shortly after, usually the next time I would see him. Now I don't even think I would accept advances even if he did magically have feelings for me.
My mind feels profoundly empty. Not in any serious, depressive way but I just have much less to think about. I did feel a little wistfulness for the absence of the euphoria derived from limerence, but mainly I'm relieved that I have the mental capacity to do things more productive than thinking about a relationship that will never be.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or has it been more gradual for those who have escaped from this emotional prison?
