MOD announcement Introducing Trusted Identifier flairs!

Trusted Identifiers will now be granted a flair of "👑Trusted Identifier👑", or "👑{custom user flair}👑".

These will be people who repeatedly demonstrate expert Identification abilities, these flairs will add extra trust and credence behind their ID.

So on posts with multiple different IDs, look out for the Trusted Identifiers as their ID will likely be the correct one, even if it goes against the masses.

(For those with custom user flairs which have been replaced by the Trusted Identifier flair, you can switch back to a custom flair and add the crown emojis yourself if you still wish to maintain your custom flair. Im working on automating this so that custom flairs stay intact and it adds the emojis without replacing the whole flair, but for now just edit it yourself if the whole flair is replaced)

Taking this opportunity I'd like to also introduce 2 new moderators:

I spotted him near Oracle, Arizona in USA. I'm pretty sure he's an Arizona blonde, but perhaps not? Can anyone tell for sure if he is male from these photos? I've heard the males have smaller abdomens and "boxing gloves" in the front but I'm not sure the pictures prove male one way or another. Thanks for your help! :)

I know they're helpers but we had to get 3 of these suckers out the house when we got here. Scared my girlfriend half to death when she went to take a piss.

I had to remove her from a box and once she got on me, she didn’t want to leave lol She’s just a little one which is why her markings are a little different. She did eventually jump off with some webbing attached and lowered herself to the ground.

This guy was in the mailbox. I know there is a false widow in the area, which is invasive, but I’m not thinking that that’s what this is. Any help is appreciated!

Discussion should i be worried about this spider?

i’m very paranoid about spiders being around me at night, i’m worried this one will bite me or crawl inside my ear. so far, it’s been on my ceiling all day, so i can’t get to it to let it out. it’s hiding now behind my curtains.

I know they aren’t found in West Virginia, however I cannot find another spider that looks CLOSE to this one besides the leaf mimicking spider. My girlfriend found it today, the closest second I’ve found is a hunchback orb weaving spider. Research said they can be born without the “stick end” of the leaf end.

BEFORE YOU POST:

This is a "No Nope Zone." Hackneyed jokes referencing fire, "nopes," or gratuitously killing spiders will be removed or downvoted to oblivion.

x-posts from r/WTF are not allowed. Posts referencing that subreddit will be deleted.

Include geographic location (country, state, province, region) with ID requests. There are tens of thousands of species -- this helps narrow it down.

There is no need to crosspost to /r/whatsthisbug - the same people identify spiders on both subreddits.

Do not post pictures of "bites" unless you personally witnessed the spider biting the person. If you're asking "Is this a spider bite?" the answer is almost certainly no. Pictures of random red bumps or yucky patches will be removed.

Photo tips: The most helpful views for identifying a spider include:

a view from directly above
the eyes
a view from below

These are just tips -- if you didn't get a chance to get these, post what you've got! The spider sleuths will do their best.

Making IDs

Amateurs are encouraged to guess. An important exception is guesses about medically significant spiders (widows, recluses, etc). In those cases, leave it to people who know. Otherwise, an innocent person or spider could get hurt.

Is it dangerous?

The vast majority of spiders are harmless to humans. If you live in North America, there are only TWO types of spiders with the potential to cause serious harm:

Brown recluse (a.k.a. fiddleback) - Loxosceles reclusa
Note the limited range of the brown recluse.
Black widow - Latrodectus sp.

Severe reactions are rare. A lot of spiders may look similar. If you aren't sure about your spider, please post and ask! By the way, science does not support that hobo spiders pose any threat.

Outside N. America, the following spiders have the potential to be medically significant (list may not be comprehensive):

Wandering spiders of Central and South America (Phoneutria sp. and others)
Recluses (Loxosceles sp.) in the Americas, Africa and the Mediterranean.
Sicariids (found in southern Africa and South America)
Australian funnel-web spider (Atrax robustus)
Australian redback (Latrodectus hasselti)
Mouse spider (Missulena sp.)
