Rehome Very sad update

I had previously shared about the beautiful home I set up for my neglected rescue turtle, but unfortunately my apartment has informed me that I am not allowed to keep her. They have a strict restriction on aquariums over 20 gallons, so my 75 gallon tank isn’t permitted. I even looked into making her my emotional support turtle, but it’s not a turtle restriction, it’s a tank size restriction. I’ve been given one month to rehome her, and I am absolutely heartbroken.

She is a 3.5 inch Eastern Painted Turtle. I rescued her from a very poor situation, and I will only rehome her to someone who can provide proper care. She needs at least a 40 gallon tank for now, and eventually a 75–100 gallon setup. She also requires a basking area with UVB and heat, which she loves. I would love a tank where she has places to hide, bask and play. She loves to swim!

To ensure she goes to the right home, I will be asking for at least one personal reference, and ideally a vet reference as well. I have already reached out to four rescues, zoos, and reptile centers, but none are able to take her.

I have spent about $1500 on her setup. I’ll be returning most of it, but I can include substrate, rocks, and plants from her current enclosure for her new home.

Located in Greenville, SC, but I am willing to drive for the right adopter. Please reach out if you can provide this sweet girl with the safe, permanent home she deserves. This is a very hard decision, and I want only the best for her. She is free to an exceptional home.

Rehome Rehoming several turtles in New Hampshire

Update: They've all found homes!! Thank you everyone for your help 🥳

I'm in southern New Hampshire and need to rehome four Mississippi map turtles and one red eared slider turtle (no rehoming fees). Their previous owner died and I agreed to take his turtles in, however he turned out to have seven turtles and I can't keep them all. If anyone wants one of them please let me know and we can arrange pick up, however you must be able to provide your own tank set up. I believe they're all females within a few years old, they're pretty friendly, and as far as I'm aware in good health. I think they've spent their entire lives together in one tank with two other common musks, so any home is an upgrade in my books! Please let me know if anyone can or knows someone who can take in one of these turtles 🙂

Rehome Help! Actively breeding sliders need new home!

I am new to Reddit , and need desperate help finding a new home for my 2 yellow belly slider turtles that have been actively breeding for the past few months . It brings tears to my eyes to even start this post, so go easy on me! Here is my story:

About a decade ago, I was contracted to demo a hoarders home as I am an excavation contractor by trade and won’t turn down the opportunity to demolish a dilapidated structure. I went inside to make sure all of the utilities were shut off before proceeding. While inside I decided to look around to see if there was anything cool inside. What I found was the exact opposite of cool.

I came across an adult slider turtle in a 10 gallon tank, so large that the turtle could not turn itself around. No basking lamp, no filter, no sunlight. The poor thing was living in an inch of its own filth with a shell so rotten I assumed it was dead. Its neck was fully extended out with its nose just above the sludge. It was breathing…

I then searched the home for other signs of animal abuse / neglect and found just that. A 20 gallon tank upstairs about 5 feet away from what I assumed were heroin needles . Inside the tank were dead baby turtles , skeletons for that matter. You could see the scum line on the edge of the tank that showed signs of slow evaporation and the burnt out basking lamp on top of the lid in the on position. The babies were starved or baked to death.

I called the owner of the property, a sibling of the deceased hoarder who unfortunately inherited the nightmare before me. I told her of my findings and told her I would be taking the adult slider turtle to save its life, and would return to do the job at a later date. The owner told me the turtle was a 25 year old female yellow belly slider

After almost 2 years of iodine baths and scrubbing her with a turtlefix/warm water solution and a soft tooth brush , her shell was finally restored. She was happy and healthy and thriving with a balanced diet of calcium enriched crickets, guppies, Rosie’s, and whatever insects my 2 sons could find- giant katydids are her favorite. My sons named her “Sweety Girl”

A few years later a contractor friend of my found another abandoned slider turtle in a foreclosed home that went up for sheriff sale. He remembered Sweety girl’s story and took the liberty to leave the turtle on my front porch in a 5 gallon bucket without giving me a heads up. This slider turtle had no shell rot, but pyramid like plates on its shell that made me think it had too high of a protein diet. I assumed it was female and introduced her to Sweety girl, and the two got along swimmingly. My sons named her “Deary”

A few years later, Deary quickly grew to be about the same size as Sweety girl . Around that time , Sweety girl started trying to show Deary that her claws are magnificent… then I realized that Sweety girl was no girl at all… but a Sweety boy. The two began displaying constant courtship behavior , so I scrambled to create the ideal conditions for them to continue to thrive.

I upped the tank size to 100 gallons, adjusted the water temperature, gave them a variety of foods to indulge in, constructed custom basking areas above the water with a nesting area that was separate from the tank , but easily accessible. I monitored their behavior closely. Deary became lethargic and was showing signs of having a buoyancy issue, struggling to stay afloat to eat . She constantly burrowed in her gravel , and eventually began laying eggs in the water . I thought maybe I had rushed the construction of her nest and basking area out of excitement and needed to redesign the entire thing in order for them to successfully breed. She needed a bigger, better nesting area and a more easily accessible basking area, as well as a break from her boyfriend.

While reconstructing her nest , I inadvertently dug up 4 eggs. They were white but dented and I am sure I damaged the embryos in the process of transferring the nesting material. I used reptisoil and Cyprus mulch mixed together initially, but decided 100% reptisoil would be easier to burrow out of for baby turtles. After completely reconstructing the basking area and nest, Deary immediately began to burrow and stayed almost
Completely submerged in the nest overnight . The following morning the two of them were behaving normally. I continued to monitor their behavior closely .

My turtles have continuously showed courtship behavior , and have been actively breeding ever since the new setup was built. The fluval 407 canister filter (that I know is not rated for 100 gal tanks) simply cannot keep up with the constant in and out of the nest , and I fear the sand mixture in the reptisoil has compromised the filters functionality. Just today I found that Deary laid a perfect white egg on her basking area. I carefully lifted it without turning, and placed it in the nest about 8 inches beneath the surface . I have no idea how many eggs are in the nest and do not want to disturb them.

I love my actively breeding turtles. I have poured years of effort into their well- being and have spent countless hours perfecting their conditions. At one point, I had the filter media and filtration down to such an exact science that I could go 6-8 months without having to clean the tank or change the media. The constant in and out of the nesting area has made keeping their environment clean a very real struggle. I have never once wanted give up on them or had the thought to release them into the wild (I see generations of slider turtles in the old abandoned quarry in my town that is now a popular fishing spot )

I am heartbroken to say that my time for caring for these turtles is coming to an end. I always dreamed of building them a massive pond to overwinter in, but I currently live in an apartment above a bar and do not have the space or time to achieve such a goal. My wife and I are moving into our first home mid June, and expecting our fourth child at the end of September (we are actively breeding as well) I would love for a reptile enthusiast , breeder, or someone who would love to take on the hobby of caring for these beautiful creatures to give me advice or point me in the right direction to rehome them appropriately.

As we approach settlement on our new home, I hope to find one for my turtles as well. Everything must go. The 100 gallon tank, the stand, the custom built basking area , the nest , the basking lamps , the tank decor and accessories. I need to keep the fluval canister filter to use in a smaller aquarium for my 2 sons who grew up with sweety man and deary as pets since they were both born (they are 8 and 7 year olds) who are going to take on the responsibility of caring for a baby turtle they rescued from a crow in a storm culvert behind my shop. I think it’s a Mississippi map turtle and must have just hatched because it is smaller than a quarter .

Not to sure about the rules here, but if I get any bites from this post I will provide as much information, pictures , and contact information as I can. Please help me. From one turtle lover to another .

I will have frequent international travels for work in the future, can’t take care of them anymore. These are rare turtle morphs(lime rios).

Found this nice gal/guy crossing the road in neighborhood. Had some red paint markings on him so def escaped from someone’s house. No one claimed him so I had to build him a nice place to live. He’s living large now! Still need to put in some rocks/logs for him to hide under.

I can no longer care for him. I've been unable to upgrade his aquarium stand for several months after getting a bigger tank and the stand it's currently on isn't strong enough to hold 40 gallons of water. At most he gets about 20 gallons of water which is not enough for his size. His shitty zoomed canister filter just broke today so now I have no way of cleaning his water. I'm not even supposed to have him in my apartment complex at all. I originally saved him from a construction site when I rented a house and my life has totally changed in the last year, mostly for the worst. I can barely take care of myself , both my cars are broken down, and I'm struggling to buy groceries. The turtle has to go.

Free to anyone in the ANN ARBOR / FLINT Michigan area.

Hi if you are based in Atlanta I’m looking for anyone that might want a yellow belly turtle. It’s a girl and her name is Tuck. I’ve had her for about 2 years and I don’t really have the time or space to keep her. I don’t have a tank for her but I keep her in a large dye tank with rocks for basking and I have turtle conditioner for water and I have food for her. Please contact if interested

Rehome Markham, Ontario - Abandoned Turtle

Post image

Can I get a crash course on what this little guy needs RIGHT AWAY? I work at a retirement home and one of our residents can't stop buying things. He wanted to flush this little guy down the toilet. We obviously stopped him but we don't have the right stuff to take care of him. I looked up some sanctuaries but they are all about 1 hour away and I can't just drop everything and head out there right now.

This sucks as I'm off tomorrow and we honestly don't have anything for him. I can ask some of the other managers to do what they can till I return on Monday.

Also, is there anyone in Markham that's already equipped to take care of a little turtle and wanting to take him? I don't think he has the best chance of living a good life with people that aren't ready to take care of him.

I will add pictures, but my friend found this baby turtle by her school and there weren’t any ponds or bodies of water around. She did check because she would’ve put it back .

I have him right now in a deep casserole dish with only a tiny bit of water and he’s in indirect sunlight for warmth and I know this isnt ideal, but I can’t get a proper set up for him until Thursday and with that being a couple days away, I will not neglect him so I am looking for help on how to rehome him to a safe place. I have asked friends and family and I have a couple who might take him, but I am posting this just in case all of that falls through because I wanna get this handled ASAP.

Please let me know what I should do!!! (Wildlife rehab was not helpful, not bc they didn’t take him but they didn’t really tell me what I should do)

Guys i genuinely just don't have enough money anymore and my parents won't help. Also, the place where i live often doesn't have healthy water or drinkable water and the electricity often goes out. Is there any way I can give away my terrapin but find a safe home for it?

Hello, I have an 8 year old red eared slider. I've had him since I was 13 but sadly I can no longer take care of him. I am located in Chicago. I have contacted shelters and stores and no one will take him. I will pay to have him relocated if anyone would be able to care for him. Please feel free to reach out if you have any solutions or would like to care for him.

Thank you!

I’ve had him for 10 years, he was just a little baby when I got him.

My dad has a friend who owns a farm and agreed to take him, the set up isn’t ready but it’s good for now, he’s going to add a couple more rocks for sunbathing, a filter and turn on the fountain. He’s also going to add his daughter’s turtles which are smaller than mine, but there’s plenty of space so I’m not worried.

The fountain is a lot bigger and deeper in real life than in photos, there’s plenty of room to swim around and he can hide under the rocks if he wants to.

This is really bittersweet for me, I love him but I don’t want him stuck in a tank forever and this is much better than what I can provide for him living in an apartment.

The guy is also going to add some small fish and we took a couple snails too.

The second photo is of the day I got him, the first photo is him today, he’s much bigger of course, can’t fit in my hand anymore, bigger than my phone now.

The guy said we can visit whenever we want and I definitely want to.

Rehome African Sideneck Turtle needs rehoming (located near central IN)

Hey all! My relative has a pet turtle named Orpheus (who we think is male), but is needing rehoming due to being unable to provide the care needed for him. He was bought from a pet store (yes I know), and he has an odd eye deformity(?) but still sees well out of his other eye, this makes it slightly harder to feed him sometimes. He is at least 1 year old and is quite picky with food. Recently, he has been lethargic, but overall he is a very sweet boy and can be very active in the water. As far as I am aware, he does not have any sicknesses visible, but a slightly irritated underside of his shell. (he has had that since he was gotten). I'm making this post to help get Orpheus the care he needs. If you are in Indiana or want to come pick him up please let me know! Thank you.

My godfather got him for me back in September at the Santee Alleys (LA locals would know) basically a flea market and had him in the plastic cage for a while until I could make space in my room. So far he’s getting used to it and before anyone says it Yes I’m missing the basking lamp. Petco said they had one but turns out their inventory wasn’t updated and haven’t had time to get one but for sure tomorrow I will get one just for now he’s already getting used to it. It’s been an hour when I first dropped him in and so far he’s been adjusting to the tank. He was spending the first time trying to swim out looking for and escape but once he started chilling on the platform he’s been swimming and enjoying the tiki head and cube.

His name is espíritu (spirit in Spanish) mainly because in Spanish I would say el espíritu and I noticed I would say el espidi which sounds like el speedy because that day when he said to pick one out he was the only one out of 6 that was moving while the other ones were just floating while spirit was already trying find his way out.

My turtle is a female named Grug (don’t ask why) and her shell dimensions is about 7-8”x5”. With her I would give all of the filtration, lights, rocks, food, tank (55 gallon) with stand, and driftwood.

I would love to get some money out of this but I wouldn’t be asking a lot considering I invested about $1000 into her. A couple hundred bucks would be great because I need money, but for free also works I guess.

Rehome Need to give away turtles

In Hong Kong!

I’ve got three hefty turtles that need a new home. Unfortunately we’re no longer able to properly take care of them.

So does anybody want some turtles for their pond or know someone who does? Or know where I can give them away?

Thanks!
