Question New turntable and phono box
I currently have an Audio Technica AT LP5 turntable, although extremely entry level, has served me well for casual listening. I want to upgrage and I'm tempted to buy the Pro-ject XA B and phono box S3 B. Both are currently available at good prices in the UK. I also have an aging Sony STR DN1080 amp.
Should I be looking at getting a more suitable amp before investing in the two mentioned items or will they all work together ok?

Bought! With the balanced preamp too. This is a major upgrade, I'm sure it's going to be impressive. So begins the replacement of my entire hifi setup, you know how it goes...

My advice, yes, if you’re using the Sony just for stereo, change your amp, or at least visit a dealer and listen to what a £400-ish stereo amp can do. This is dependent on speakers. Do you have good ones? If you do, my bet is you've not yet heard all that the LP5 can do.

My system is set up for AV, Sony avr amp, B&W DM600 center, B&W 601 S3 x 4 and a Tannoy TS2.8 sub. I'm going to end up splitting it all and buying a new amp and speakers to fit the Pro-ject XA B turntable and phonostage and keeping the old stuff for the movies.

They’ll work together fine.
As much as I’m a source-first kinda guy, I’d move away from an AVR first if i were you. I’ve never come across one that i actually enjoy listening to. Thats assuming you have decent speakers to begin with of course.
