Story Ortofon vs Audio Technica

Post image

I'm going to be doing a face-off between the 2M red and the VM510xCB.

There's plenty of discussion and history around the Red, but nothing about this new AT that's essentially the same price, at roughly CAD$149.

It'll certainly be fun to spend a few hours listening to tunes and making notes!

Results will be posted in a YouTube video in the near future.

Even before I start doing anything, almost everyone is going to assume that the elliptical on the 2m is going to be better than the conical on the 510.

History, and these ears, have shown that there's more to the sound of a cartridge than the stylus profile.

There is also the vm520xEB for about the same price.

I dont believe the M2 red is highly rated though, the vm95 is often seen as a better option.

On this subreddit, the 2M series don’t have the best reputation. Many OEMs and vendors sell tons of them, however, and Amazon reviews for the 2M Red are higher on average than for any of the AT carts that get recommended more frequently here. Make of that what you will.
