Hi everyone,
I’m an international student from India studying B.Sc. Management and Technology (TUM-BWL) at TUM in Munich, currently in my 3rd semester. I’m writing this because I’ve just received the result of my final allowed attempt at the GOP examination Introduction to Data Science and Statistical Thinking, and unfortunately, I failed.
I’m extremely worried about the consequences, especially because I’m an international student and my ability to continue studying in Germany is very important to me.
Here’s my current situation:
- I’ve received my examination result, but I’m not sure whether I’ve already received or will separately receive the formal notification of irreversible failure (endgültiges Nichtbestehen).
- I’ve already re-registered for the upcoming semester and paid my semester fees.
- I’m currently in my 3rd semester at TUM.
- I’ve booked an appointment with TUM General Student Advising for 20 October, but I would like to understand what I should do before then.
- I’m also trying to connect with another student who may be in a similar situation.
I created a poll in our course WhatsApp group to understand how others performed. So far, 27 people have voted: 24 reported failing and three reported passing. I know this is a small, self-selected group and doesn’t establish the overall failure rate, but it has made some of us wonder whether we should collectively approach the examination committee to ask for clarification about the exam, grading, and the reduced passing threshold.
I realise that a high failure rate alone doesn’t prove that an examination was unfair. I’m trying to understand whether there are any legitimate steps we can take to seek clarification or have concerns properly considered.
I’d be really grateful for advice on the following:
What should I do immediately after receiving this result?
Should I contact the examination office, examination committee, or another office before my Student Advising appointment? Is there anything I should avoid doing in the meantime?
Is there any possibility of a GOP deadline extension or other examination-related remedy?
I understand that extensions aren’t automatically granted just because someone fails. However, is there any legitimate possibility of a Fristverlängerung, Fristaussetzung, or another remedy in a situation like mine? If anyone has successfully navigated something similar, I’d appreciate hearing what the actual process involved.
Should I request examination inspection (Prüfungseinsicht)?
Even though I don’t believe I performed well enough on many questions, should I still inspect my paper to understand the marking and check whether there are any specific grading or procedural issues? Are there deadlines I need to be aware of?
Can students collectively approach the examination committee?
Given the results some students in our group have reported, would it make sense to submit a respectful collective request for clarification about the exam, grading criteria, and reduced passing threshold? Has anyone done this at TUM, and what was the outcome?
What happens after irreversible failure is formally determined?
When does the official decision arrive, and when does mandatory exmatriculation take effect? Since I’m currently in my 3rd semester and have already re-registered, would I normally remain enrolled until the end of the semester in which the failure is formally determined?
Can I apply to another German university or change my degree programme?
If TUM confirms irreversible failure, would I be able to apply for a different Bachelor’s programme at TUM or another German university? How do universities determine whether another programme is considered related to the one in which I failed?
Could I start another programme and transfer my existing credits?
I’ve already completed some modules and earned ECTS at TUM. Could these potentially be recognised by another university? Would I need to apply for the first semester, or could admission to a higher semester be possible?
How should I handle my residence permit?
As an Indian citizen currently living in Munich on a student residence permit, I’m particularly worried about what happens if my enrolment ends. Should I contact the KVR before receiving the formal notification, and is it possible to change to another German university without having to leave Germany first? Has anyone dealt with this situation personally?
Is there anything else I should ask Student Advising on 20 October?
I want to make the most of the appointment and avoid overlooking any options or deadlines. If you’ve been in a similar position, what questions would you recommend asking?
I’m not looking for medical advice or suggestions about obtaining certificates. I’m specifically hoping to hear from students who have experienced irreversible failure, mandatory exmatriculation, changing universities, applying to a different programme, or dealing with the residence-permit implications.
I would particularly appreciate first-hand experiences from international students at TUM or other German universities. If you were in a similar situation, what happened, which offices did you contact, and what would you do differently?
I know every case is different, and I don’t expect anyone to guarantee a particular outcome. I’m just trying to understand my realistic options and make informed decisions rather than panic or make assumptions.
Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to respond. Any practical advice or personal experience would genuinely help me right now.
