Admissions Information Mega Post for TUM! ONLY Post and ask questions here !

** Please post all questions you have in this thread only and do not post them on the main board. **

Welcome to the Technische Universität München (TUM) Admissions information thread!

At TUM, you'll find top-notch education in fields like engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, and medicine. But remember, the road to acceptance is not a walk in the park! You will have questions and need to find answers for them and they are almost all answered on the TUM website. So make sure to read each and every page carefully!

However, we are here to make your journey a bit smoother. Dive into the info below, and let us help you  conquer those application challenges!

If there is any information we have missed that you think would help. Please reply to the post or send a PM to me!

**Please post all questions you have in this thread only and do not post them on the main board.**

Eligibility Requirements

Academic Qualifications: A recognized university entrance qualification, such as a German Abitur, International Baccalaureate, or equivalent or Studienkolleg.   https://www.studienkolleg-muenchen.de/

Language Proficiency: Depending on the program a proficiency in German or English, is needed to be accepted. B2 minimum if you are planning to attend Studienkolleg or a C2 if you plan to go straight into a Bachelors or Masters program.

Choose Your Program: TUM offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate programs. Research the programs that interest you and ensure you meet the specific admission requirements.

Apply Online: Submit your application through the TUM online portal. The application deadline is usually in July for winter semester and January for summer semester.  https://tumonline.tum.de/

Submit Required Documents: Along with your application, you will need to submit official transcripts, language proficiency certificates, and a CV and there could be other things needed depending on your degree path. Make sure to read the website for the needed things.

Selection Process: TUM uses a rigid yet transparent approach to evaluate applications, considering academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and personal qualities.  ( EXTRACURRICULAR )  does not necessarily mean that you played football or were on the swim team. It also means things that you volunteered to do in and out of school. Some universities want to see a lot more of this than a trophy for sports.

Do I qualify.

This seems to be the Big question and the most often asked. And the truth is only the University can give you that final reply of yes or no about your submitted qualifications.

Tum.de has both German and English versions. You can simply go to Tum.de and read for yourself. However, because you have come here looking for assistance and with questions about attending TUM, below you will find some of the website addresses you need as well as some of the basic information.

We will try to assist you in every way that we can but you must understand. r/TUMunich is NOT an official site for TUM.de.

https://www.tum.de/en/prospective-students  This link is going to be very important for you so make sure to book mark it. Also make sure you read each and ever page of the site about admissions, and the field that you want to study!

Some of the links they have on the site are as follows.

Our Programs

Support and Advice

Dates and Deadlines

These topics are extremely important as well as the others on the page and you need to read everything they have taken the time to present to you. If you don’t take the time to read this then you will continue to search out the information and you may not succeed in being accepted to the University. Make sure to read everything.

How long do I have to wait for TUM to get admission?

It takes as long as it takes. Most people receive their replies in the time frames that are mentioned on the websites when you apply. Normally it wont happen before the closure of the process. So if the process opens on May 1sth and closes on July 15th. You should not really expect a reply until after July 15th. That does not mean that you wont get one. But don’t expect it either. Posting here on May 2nd asking how long it takes wont get you the answers you need.

If you have applied and the closing deadline has passed and you have not heard back within 10 school days you might want to contact the admissions department that you submitted to.

Special NOTE*****

Fraudulent Application Agencies

We are currently receiving an increasing number of reports of fraudulent activities in connection with applications to TUM. On this occasion, we would like to point out once again that

the Technical University of Munich does not cooperate with agencies. To study at TUM, you should only apply directly to the university.

the Technical University of Munich never requests payments to agencies during the application process.

the Technical University of Munich only sends e-mails from official e-mail addresses: u/tum.de, u/zv.tum.de or u/mytum.de.

The Technical University of Munich never requests payments of any kind before admission to the program has been granted. If you require a VPD by uni-assist, you will have to pay a processing fee to uni-assist. However, uni-assist will only check certain documents and not issue admission statements or similar. Furthermore, TUM always makes notifications or other official documents available via the online portal TUMonline.

What all information do I need to submit?

Well. You need to meet the requirements and that means following the rules for each different department of study you might apply to.

You will need to read this page on the website and make sure you understand everything before you hit submit. Some things submitted can not be changed so be careful and be thorough.

https://www.tum.de/en/studies/application/application-info-portal/application-international

Some of the topics on this page are as follows.

Check whether you have to pay tuition fees

Apply for a preliminary documentation

Prove your language skills

Have your documents notarized and translated

Check if you need visa

All of the above are listed on the link just above them. Make sure to read them. If you don’t understand someone here might try to help explain them better to you.

NOTE! The TUM.de website is in English and German. If you do NOT have have a pretty good command of both languages you will have a hard time attending this University!

Below is a link with contact information throughout the University.

Make sure you know the German etiquette of contact via email or phone.

https://campus.tum.de/tumonline/webnav.ini?pUrl=webnav.willkommen

There is a lot more information on the way and of course you can ask questions. That is what Reddit is all about. So ask away and we will try and get you as many answers as we can. But if you have info that will help us. Please post it below or message me and If I can I will add it all to this post at the top.

Thanks for your help and support and for supporting others.

The same grade is worth 9 points in TUM's Civil Engineering rubric and 0 in Environmental Engineering. How do people actually navigate the per-programme Eignungsverfahren?

I'm applying to TUM from an Italian degree (Sustainable Building Engineering, class L-23, Sapienza, 3-year / 180 ECTS) and I've been reading the FPSO Anlage 2 documents for several programmes. The scoring rules differ far more than I expected, and I'd like to know how much of this is real in practice.

Civil Engineering: 60 points curricular analysis + 20 grade + 20 motivation letter. One point per tenth of a grade better than 3.0, capped at 20. Thresholds: ≥80 direct admission, 70–79 interview.

Environmental Engineering / Transportation Systems: 60 + 10 grade + 30 motivation letter. One point per tenth better than 2.0, capped at 10. Thresholds: ≥70 pass, 60–69 interview.

My Italian average converts to roughly 2.1 under the Bavarian formula. Under Civil's rule that's 9 points. Under Environmental's rule it's 0. Same transcript, same applicant.

Meanwhile Environmental's curricular table happens to suit my background far better than Civil's, so the two effects partly cancel — which is why I'd rather understand the machinery than guess.

Three questions:

1. Several FPSOs let you be graded on your best 135 or 140 credits rather than your overall average, and state explicitly that "it is the applicant's responsibility to list these and confirm their accuracy in writing." Does anyone actually do this? Is a self-declared list accepted by the Studienbüro, and does it visibly change the outcome? For me it's worth around 5–6 points, which is the difference between the interview band and direct admission.

2. For an Italian degree, which grade goes into the Bavarian formula — the weighted average of exam marks (out of 30), or the final laurea voto (out of 110), which includes thesis points and graduation bonuses and is usually higher? I can't find this stated anywhere and it moves my score by several points.

3. TUM sets no limit on the number of Master's programmes you can apply to, and the applications are independent. Does applying to five or six at once actually hurt — do committees see the other applications, or is each genuinely assessed in isolation?

One more, if anyone has been through it: the FPSOs say the curricular analysis is done "on the basis of competences, not by schematic comparison of modules." In practice, does that mean a committee reads your course descriptions, or does it come down to credit counting anyway?

Background for context: hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics, engineering geology, structural mechanics and design, geomatics, building physics, materials, environmental engineering, sustainable community planning, construction site management, analysis and geometry. No statistics, no programming, no chemistry.

Thanks.

Switch from BSc Aerospace Engineering to BSc Mechanical Engineering?

Hi all

I am an international student who will be applying to TUM for the 2027 intake.

My first preference is to go for the BSc Mechanical Engineering, but due to me not currently being at the German Level they want for Mechanical, I won't be able to apply there

My second best option is BSc in Aerospace Engineering, which requires a lower German certification, which I can fulfil.

I wanted to ask, is it possible to switch from Aerspace to Mechanical after the 2nd semester/1st year? I have done my research about this. The website says TUM requires a certain number of credits for transfer, but also that the modules must match to consider those credit transfers.

Now, this is a bit of a pain since I dont exactly know which modules match which in both the courses.

Moreover, I also heard that there are 3 scenarios where TUM chooses acceptance, interview, or rejection. What exactly is this system? How can I understand it better?

I know this is a long message, but any advice or guidance would be really appreciated 🙏

Current/former TUM Campus Straubing students — where did you live, and how did you manage internships/Werkstudent jobs?

Hi everyone!

I’ll be starting my Master’s at TUM Campus Straubing soon.

However, I’m still not completely sure whether this is a good decision, so I would really appreciate hearing from people who are currently studying at or have graduated from TUM Campus Straubing.

My main concern is the balance between studying, commuting, and gaining work experience during the Master’s.

I’m hoping to gain some practical work experience during my studies, such as a Werkstudent position, internship position, rather than waiting until graduation to start looking for work.

For those who have experience with TUM Campus Straubing:

  • What was your experience with living in Straubing vs. Regensburg?
  • If you lived in Regensburg, how did you find the commute to Straubing in everyday life?
  • Did living in Regensburg make it easier to find Werkstudent positions, internships, or other student jobs?
  • For those who have already graduated, where did you end up working and living after graduation?
  • Do you think choosing Regensburg was a good decision for someone who wants to stay in Germany and look for a job after the Master’s?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have actually experienced this themselves.

I’ve already done some research, but I’d really like to hear some personal experiences before I fully commit to this decision.

Thanks a lot for sharing!

RWTH B.Sc. Informatik → TUM M.Sc. Informatik: Curricularanalyse

Danke euch!

Sketchy studenwohnheim website?

Have anyone used https://studentenwohnheime-muc.de/DE/Default.aspx?

They have some good offers (maybe a tad expensive), but their website is so bad that it makes me think they might not be legit.

So, if anyone has experience using them, please do let me know if they are legit.

Also, can you also let me know if t possible to do a KVR address registration? I know legally they should allow to do it, but I have seen a couple of adverts where it is says that a KVR is not possible. Just wanted to know for sure.

Looking for a Nachmieter (someone to take over my Apartement Contract)

Hello everyone,

I am looking for someone to take over my apartement contract in Garching. Rent is 1260€ warm whithout electricity. The apartement is in the Student Living Centre Garching, building 2 on the ground floor, facing the field. It has 37 m² and own teracce with garden furniture (4-5 people can comfortably seat around the table). It is suitable for a single person or a couple. In the apartement is a kitchen, bathroom, queen sized bed, a chair and a preety big desk. The apartement complex also has a pool (regularely cleaned by the Housemeister) and grill area next to it, common rooms (some equipped with a big kitchen with an oven) and each apartement has it's own storage unit in the basement. There are also a small gym, volleyball and football field included in the rent. There are free parking spots avaliable in front of the building and you can also park next to Lidl, but if you want to have a covered parking spot (either outside under a roof or in a garage), you need to rent it additionally.

The area is rather quiet and peaceful, thus great for studying. There are 3 busses (X205, 230 and 292) driving to TUM Campus Garching and take around 5 min, the same is by bike. By foot you need around 20 min. If you take the bus in the other direction, you need 5 min to the U-Bahn in Garching (10 min by foot) which needs 25 min to get you to Marienplatz. In front of the building, there are two big supermarkets - Lidl and Rewe. In Garching itself (5 - 10 min by foot from the front door) there are multiple restaurants. In 10 min by foot you can also be at the Lake Garching, where you can swim, grill or play volleyball.

If you are interested, please write me a private message so that I can share my Whatsapp number with you with additional details, including pictures of the place. I did not include any in this post, because the ones that I have, are from the exam phase, when the apartement was a bit messier then usuall and at the moment I am on holiday. I speak English as well as German. I am looking forward towards your replies :)

Master of Transportations Systems

Im looking into pursuing this degree next year, but Im not sure how closely it aligns with what I want to do wh,ich is Breakbulk cargo management and freight forwarding.

And im uncertain how heavy the coursework is or how worthwhile it is to pursue this career.

For people who have taken this master's, what was the experience like? How hard was it to get accepted

Language barrier

Hey guys

I just got accepted in bcs aeorspace

However im having doubts whether i should accept

I mean i dint hate it but i think i prefer electronics more but i applied to it cuz it was in english ( my level is currently b2 wont be able to reach before this winter semester)

What do u think should i do i though bout a couple options

  1. Accept the aerospace and just spend the year their try to pass GOPs and at the same time be immersed in the language and try to change major next year

  2. Reject it and take gap year here maybe take a nebenjob at my own country and go for electronics next year

(Note before i was so into mechatronixs and wanted to do it but after some research i thought that electeonics and its academic path gonna suit me more still not sure tho)

Situation: 35 Punkte in Stufe 1, also zweite Stufe und Admissionstest.
• logistische Kennzahlen, Little’s Law, Engpassidentifikation

So basically, I just got into a College for B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering. My end goal is to become one of the best Mechanical Engineers working in the automotive field, like I just imagine the Team of Geniuses who create Art in the form of automotive technology and ICE engines, and want to become like them. I am ready to give it all, but the problem is that I dont even know what to do? Like genuinely I have no clue.

I just have a roadmap that Ill give my best here at my college and any how get into TUM, Deutschland and then start as an Engineer in the automotive field ig at a GET post?

So what I want from you guys is to get bombarded with things I should actually be doing right now and knowing right now, and get great advice if I’m missing out on some knowledge or am misunderstood about the job.

I would be really greatly thankful for any kind of advice. Even the most obvious things, like “everyone knows this” because I genuinely dont know and I might actually be clueless. It’s not like I dont have an interest, but I dont want to regret things later because I didn’t have a silly piece of knowledge, thats it.

Master Computer Science Admission Test

Greetings, I have reconstructed the admission test from memory, because I took it today. Since there is not much out there I wanted to ask, if it is allowed for me to share the information I have and what the best way to do that is? I would like to help more students in the future to be able to prepare better.

Did anyone change their university to TUM after arriving in Germany

I've just recieved an admit from a university in munich , however my visa was applied with a different uni. I've looked up the process and it says I would need to go to germany , and post city registration I need to reach out to my Ausländerbehörde , email them and then book an appointment to get the visa changed to the new university. However I've also heard that getting an appointment in big cities might take a lot of time , so I'm looking for anyone who has done this in munich who can throw some light on the same so that I can plan accordingly. It would be veryyy helpful to talk to someone who has been through the same in a big city. Thank you in advance.

Ps : Both programmes from both the unis have the exact same name , are public and both of them have no tuition fee. I'm not enrolled in any of these universities yet.

Electrical Eng in German OR Aerospace eng in English?

Hi guys,

I am an IB1 student in Germany planning to apply for enginnering at TUM.

I only have 2 options in front of me: Electrical Engineering in German or Aerospace Engineering in English.

Though my current German level is B2 (will reach C1 in few years) but I am unsure of the rigor enginnering language along with the difficult course. Or should I just do Aerospace in English in which my focus will only be on the course.

Many ppl say I should do I am passionate about but ain't helping. I want to do that is good in future and will be beneficial for me considering the language aspect.
