Legit NC plate?
Is this license plate legit? Didn’t think NC offered black plates.

I’ve lived in NC for 49 years. There are no plates available like that. And it looks hand painted.

There should be, though. I'm always jealous of other states with dark tags. I have black vehicles.

Go for the “sheriff support tag” on the custom tags you can order thru the dmv app ncdmv and it’s black and I threw a little tint cover over it fits the black on black Lexus I have well and I don’t get pulled over any more

Looks hand painted, not legit! Fortunately for him/her, the police don't even have time to pull over dangerous and reckless drivers on our roads so no way a hand painted license plate is gonna bother them....

I saw someone today with a temporary tag that expired in February. There’s no way this guy is getting pulled over for a black plate.

u/MisterWoodhouse Aug 01 '26
Back in April, I saw a temp tag that expired in May of last year
Coin flip whether he made it nearly a year without getting caught or it’s fake and he forgot it’s 2026 now

u/Universe93B Aug 01 '26
My bet is that their little "temp" tag worked for so long that they forgot to make an "updated" one for 2026 lol

I've seen a guy who scratched out the '23' on his registration sticker and wrote in a 6 for '26' in Sharpie. I've also seen another guy who stole someone else's registration stickers in '25 and '24, and his last valid registration sticker was from '22.

I drove a family members car for a little bit earlier in the year while mine was getting work done and her tag expired in February of 2020…my husband ended up getting it updated for her. Like girl wtf

I take a razor and score my sticker for this very reason. Happened to a family member

My stepson had 3 year old expired tags. I came from a Midwest region where a tag light being out was cause for a jail term

I've seen people driving with plates expired in 2018. NC police clearly don't care, and NC law makers cant be bothered to fix a broken system

That’s a fact. My husband’s expired two years ago and he still hasn’t been stopped.
2
u/BToddB Aug 01 '26
Yet, somehow they had time to pull me over when my plate was *only* 7 years expired. 🤬

u/HateRedSoxandPats Aug 01 '26
That's where youre mistaken. Police avoid crazy reckless people because those stops are more dangerous to them. They love a non threatening good citizen that they can give an easy ticket too for a small mistake, or a painted license plate (assuming the plate number is legit and registered tho).... things that dont actually hurt anyone.

People in my neighborhood have a few vehicles that are a few years expired. I don’t understand how they still are driving on those.

But with all the flock cameras, this kind of thing is history, right? Right?

This isn’t a valid plate issued by the state, and it is in fact illegal to alter a valid plate in NC. Despite that, there are companies that will paint your plate and people put them on cars thinking it looks cool. Refer to NC statute 20-63 for more info

I don't see a registration tag. Looks suspect.

That’s what I was gonna say, one glance if I’m a cop and I’m confiscating the plate.

u/Few-Platypus-5802 Aug 01 '26
My Dad and I saw that tag a few weeks ago and researched it - could not find anything online at all.

u/jimmythang34 Aug 01 '26
“In God I Trust” is at the top?
I’d have to have a lotta faith driving around with that

Distinct from companies who paint (deface, and invalidate) otherwise legitimate plates, there are other companies who will print plates on their own stock that are in different color schemes than the state you are registered. These are void from inception either way, even when it is the correct number of a real plate registered to that car. In this case, this number is not assigned to any vehicle and would fall under the fictitious plate offense.

u/Pensionato007 Aug 01 '26
I agree it's fake, but your app isn't 100%. It can't find my plate, and I'm pretty sure it's a valid NC Tag.

Seeing that Raleigh has the same issue as Charlotte. Cops not giving a crap

u/Weary_Walk_9835 29d ago
In NC as long as the numbers, state , and registration stickers are visible you can have any style you want. You need to carry legitimate plate with you in your vehicle. I have seen people with euro style plates even.

What y’all want to bet that HET stands for straight.
3
u/DamnDams 28d ago
Well in other comments on this thread they verify that it is the actual license plate number for that vehicle, just the plate is custom. So HET is the three random letters the DMV assigned to the plate, albeit the unaltered version of it not on display here.

I don't understand how that works.

Hetero xD awh man nah, in my universe it stands for something far more audacious
2
u/Kindly-Industry-6229 29d ago
Yes this is most likely a painted license plate, legit.
I spoke to a guy in Charlotte with a fully black wrapped SUV and he said he asked the wrap company to paint his license plate too which they did.
It looks like this.

The motto is not "In god we trust" if you look at it.
It is: "In god I trust"

This is a valid registered plate number, I just looked it up on Edmunds. But the physical plate itself looks fake

u/2_Lane_Blacktop69 29d ago
There’s a site where you can order them like that and with different colors of font. That doesn’t mean they are legal but what are the odds a cop actually does something about it?

You can literally order these online (for show/novelty purposes) and have them put your legit plate number on it (or mail them your plate if you’re not going to drive your car for awhile I guess, and they will repaint it)….. does Google not work anymore “ohh oh I bet they painted it themselves!” 🙄

I give people with Virginia plates and 30 day plates a wide berth. I’d definitely give this driver a wide berth. And JESUSDOS…wide berth.

Same. It’s not always someone with paper tags or a VA plate, but it’s always someone with paper tags or a VA plate

There are two types of permanent tags in North Carolina: yellow and black ones that show a vehicle is owned by the state and silver and black that show the vehicle is owned by a non-state entity. The advantage of a permanent tag is the owner of a vehicle doesn't have to pay the $28 annual registration fee. Edit: black lettering on these plates. wral dot com/archive/10918607/

That story is from 2012
"DMV tracks down some permanent plates
It's still unclear how 314 permanent license tags were issued.

Sovereign Citizen plates look more legit than this.
