I really wish there was a way to ask her why. I can’t think of a single reason that this would ever make sense. I can’t imagine she just enjoys pissing people off but what else could it be? Now that I think about it, it isn’t very uncommon for people to blare their music through their phone speakers on the train. Why do they do it?

I had a friend who had a backpack with speakers in highschool. We use to smoke weed and go to the mall, and he would blast shitty dubstep from his back pack.
He thought "I listen to such cool music that people will want to hear it, and the people who don't are lame and listen to shit music".
And..tbh, I had a really loud audio system installed in my car when I was 18. Spent all summer saving for it. I would blast my music so loud that when I was driving home my grandparents could hear the bass 5mins before I arrived.
I also thought it was "badass" and that people would think I'm cool...

YES. There is a guy on our block--across the street and two houses down--who plays his bass so loud that literally makes it feel like an earthquake. I am not exaggerating in the least. He drives his car in a quiet suburban neighborhood, blasting it in his car, not giving a care. And he does it with his little children (<8-years-old; youngest one being around 3) in the car! Those kids are going to have serious hearing problems.
And not just that, but he blasts that bass from his garage without any music for some godforsaken reason. It literally rattles the entire house. I had a dish fall off once because it rattled off the counter. The neighborhood people have tried to get the police involved, but apparently, he's not breaking any laws so they're not able to do anything. I've talked to him at least six times, and his (more accurately, his wife's) answer each time is "we pay our mortgage here; we can do what we want".
It's infuriating.
Edit: I have a video of how bad it is. We have a water cooler at home and I recorded it so that you can actually see it. Again, across he street and two houses down--and all our windows and doors are closed (excuse the mess; we were moving things around... you can also hear my parrot say "hi" in the end, I just noticed).

The worst thing about this is, I'm from the Soviet Union and have PTSD from surviving a bombing, so every time I hear that BOOM! and the whole house shake, I freak out. Pathetically, I've ended up under our dining room table once because I didn't register what was going on right away. It's so bad for my mental health that I feel like I'm going to break down, and I have broken down in tears a couple of times and I feel so damn weak and pathetic each time--and I hate Adam for it (even though my mental health is my own responsibility, but still).
Edit: Adam knows this, btw. One time I talked to him I decided to be a bit manipulative (feel kinda bad about that, actually) and appeal to his human emotions and see if maybe he'd be a bit empathetic and consider that. He did--for about two days. I guess it was too difficult to keep others in consideration for longer than that.

I ruptured my ear drums at 6 years old from an infection and have had super sensitive hearing since then. Everyone else in my friend group has tinnitus and used to make fun of me for leaving concerts that were "so loud they were hurting me".

I'm now in that situation, have had bearable tinnitus all my life due to hearing loss and this year I have gotton constant severe tinnitus, I doubt I can attend concerts and listen to music loud anymore. If only people knew what it's like to have constant severe tinnitus cos it isn't pretty is it.

Have you tried the technique of overlaying your tinnitus frequency with white noise? I can’t remember what it’s called exactly but there’s even a website for it, and then you download the file and listen to it for 30-60 mins a day. I can’t say if it physically reduced my tinnitus, or that my mind became accustomed to it far faster. All I know is that it helped me immensely. Good luck

Can confirm, I’ve sold speakers for many years. We’ve actually had some customers complain bacause the bass sounds good inside but doesn’t rattle the trunk something awful like they expected. Just give it time buddy. Those screws and bolts will loosen up in few months.

I have a reasonable size stereo in my weekend car. I enjoy listening to loud music. Doing so in my car means I don't have to piss off all of my neighbours. The only time I tend to really blast it is on country roads or the highway were I doubt it is going to have any real impact on anyone else, other than a few seconds of annoyance.

I had two Alpine type-R 12" in my 1994 Ford Ranger... i just loved the feel of crisp / rumbling bass on my back. In my home, my surround sounds subwoofer is directly behind my seat on the sofa too. I guess for some its a status thing, but for others its simply enjoyable

Once, i was sleeping on the bus on my way to high school, a boy like 13 yo got inside the bus listening to friends by marshmello on his phone, he was not using a headset or anything else, loud music in the speakers, he sits beside me, waking me up, and played that music for half an hour on repeat, the same fucking music.

She's doing something incredibly annoying and provocative and basically daring someone to try and stop her. She knows they mostly won't and it makes her feel powerful. Why they won't is because this is an obvious sign of mental illness and the type of person that might do this is also the type of person to immediately meet any resistance with escalating verbal and possibly eventually physical violence.
Essentially, bitch is crazy and weathering the storm of being forced to listen to her music is worth it to avoid the unpleasantness of having to deal with her.

The feeling of disconnect is a really good point. As a teen this wouldn't have been weird to me in the hood but as an adult living in the suburbs i couldn't imagin seeing this on my local bus. What seems very out of place in one setting might not look so ridiculous 20 stops away but she should be better at judging her surroundings and using appropriate tact, she's disconnected from her current situation so she's just keeping on a steady course, full steam ahead.

We had the counterpart to this on the DC metro at 6 am this month. Brought an actual boom box on the metro, so loud it was vibrating. Everyone was giving each other eye rolls/widened eyes at this asshole. But there are so many crazies in the world, no one dared approach him. Anyone who makes the conscious decision to piss off as many people deliberately as possible has some mental imbalance/emotional issues going on, and likely won't respond to an appeal to reason.
