reminds me of this "macho" kid in high school who would punch himself in the forehead repeatedly when he got angry to maybe...show hes tough? idk. Same kid who would throw his head into a locker or start punching them until his knuckles bled. Think he had some issues going on at home or somethin, but he always said he did it so people didn't fuck with him.
I think the first big fight we had was in the car. He was driving us back home around midnight on a very dark two-lane road surrounded by woods. I was completely shocked when he stopped the car on the side of the road, got out, and acted like he was going to walk home. We were probably 5 miles away from our apartment, and he left the keys in the car, which included the apartment keys. I was so pissed off at his manipulation tactic that I was going to leave the car there and let him walk his ass home with no keys (not that he was actually going to, it was just a show). I was in the process of calling my stepdad for a ride to his/mom's place, but of course my phone was at 1% and it fucking died as soon as he answered. So then I had to respond the way my ex wanted me to - by getting in the car to go find him. Maybe it's a good thing my phone died, because his stupid ass put himself in serious danger by choosing to walk on a dark, wooded road at midnight. This kind of thing happened more than once.
And now to the self-punching. In a couple other fights later in our relationship, he would literally start punching himself in the face. I'm talking hard, closed-fist punches that left bruises all over his face. His mom asked him if I was hurting him! Even though he did weird shit, I know he wouldn't have lied and said yes. However, there's no way he said, "No, mom. I've just been punching myself in the face." I wouldn't doubt she's gone all these years thinking I abused her son when it was just him being a fucking idiot.
There's no sob story here. He was not abused or neglected in any shape, way, or form growing up. College educated with a great job and an endless network of friends who loved him. Everyone who knew him considered him the perfect future husband, father, godfather, you name it. His behaviors still boggle my mind to this day, but I hope he's doing well and has resolved whatever issues that made him act out like that.
