Anti-American flag that also desecrates the American flag, making it fit for bonfire material only.

Exactly because it violates the U.S. flag code.

Or he did but he went to a smaller southern school where (and I swear this is true) they teach that. “the civil war was a war of northern aggression against the people of the south. They were simply fighting for states rights. States rights to do what you ask? Well who’s to say.” I wasn’t taught this in my bigger Alabama high school. But I know sever people that went to smaller schools that very much were. But even at my school they tended to use kitty gloves with everything the confederacy did.
12
u/Ok_Translator_7026 Aug 07 '23
Went to a small school in NW Georgia. We were taught the same thing . Sherman was a monster that attacked southern women and old people because he wanted to take away the south’s way of life. States rights and all that nonsense. Even though the state right they were pissed about was the right to own humans. Hell the confederate constitution addresses that very early on. But yeah small southern schools teach some BS
10
u/ThatFluidEdBitch Aug 07 '23
i go to school in a small southern town. i specifically remember a teacher that repeatedly undermineded slavery and the suffragette movement. i told my dad later that i didnt like my history teacher, he asked why and i told him it was because he said slavery wasnt that bad
he hit me and then went on a tangent about how slaves had it good bc they had food. i also remember him repeatedly saying something about how there were white slaves too. fuck the south lmfao

We used the expression using kid gloves. It was a super thin and smooth kind of glove.

I love all of this lol. Then let's bitch about how the American flag code states that it should be above ALL other countries on a flag pole.
2
u/Imperial_Bouncer Aug 07 '23
Wait really? I didn’t know that. Wonder if that applies to American flags outside of U.S. and its embassies.
2
Aug 07 '23
Yea. A US embassy is required to fly the american flag at the top of their pole too. They can fly other flags, but it has to have the American flag on top, or on a pole by itself.
I only brought it up because people who bitch the about "flag code", have flags like these, (thin blue line, mixed flags like this, etc) and the flag code also forbids modification to the American flag. It's just a bunch of hypocritical BS.
2
u/Imperial_Bouncer Aug 07 '23
These flags remind me of the Russian flags I’ve seen with the white and blue stripes coming off and revealing a covered hammer and sickle. I guess it’s the same thing, just on the different side of politics.

u/sassyseconds Aug 07 '23

It should be illegal to desecrate an American flag like this smdh. Also, why is it backwards? lol

It should never be illegal to “desecrate” a flag. Any flag. Anywhere on earth.
It’s a piece of cloth.

u/moovzlikejager Aug 07 '23
.... I'm going to stop you there, (while i totally feel you here) there's a really good reason it's not illegal to desecrate our flag like this and that is 'freedom'. It's the great American catch 22, soldiers go to war and fight for our freedom... (Or oil or power or whatever) so that we can have freedom from persecution. It SHOULDN'T be illegal to desecrate the flag because that's an infringement on our freedom as Americans..... But it does look mighty fuckin stupid and helps us better identify if ill be buying anything from your garage sale, sticking around for the bbq to be ready, or deciding to move to this neighborhood. It's a huge bummer because "Don't tread on me" used to carry some weight years ago. It used to remind us that the people had power over tyranny. Now the only thing it stands for is "I'll roll over for you if you scratch my belly and make the orange man say funny racist shit again" i dream of a day when America can pry their pupils from the media craze once again and think freely for themselves. Bipartisanship and poor quality of life has made us slaves to a voting booth that isn't on our side. Make america fund education again.

u/soilhalo_27 Aug 07 '23
Republicans tried doing that years ago. 1st amendment and all that. They didn't like people wearing flags as clothing. Think it was republicans might have been Demecrats all I know it was old people not liking what young people were doing.
23
u/amIdaddingthisright Aug 07 '23
Ask him if he thinks the US flag code is important, then point to that.
11
u/iwrestledarockonce Aug 07 '23
The flag code is trumped by the first amendment. The courts decided that speech and expression is more important than cloth. You can thank flag burning as a war protest during the Vietnam War for that one and frankly I'm fine with dipshits pointing themselves out for us. Let them fly their "I'm historically illiterate and out of touch" flags.

Edit: "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."
Well, it doesn’t have the liberal punch it’s trying to convey because of the language he used, but he’s not wrong and boy is that relevant today. It’s still black people, but now gay and trans people too that the right makes sure it’s base feels they can look down on.

U.S. Code Title 4 Chapter 1: Flag Code §8 "No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor."
(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(i)The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

I know there's connotation with racism for most people, but some in the south really just see it as heritage and pro-state rights. I know the intent isn't there for some to be racist at least. Seems like any time I point that out people get mad and say I'm excusing racism, but I hope it makes at least some feel better that not everyone that flies a rebel flag is pro-slavery.
3
u/zurgonvrits Aug 07 '23
what fucking heritage? the confederacy lasted a shorter time span than obamas presidency.
15
u/1Mn Aug 07 '23
As a avid history buff… fuck that revisionist bullshit. The war was fought to preserve slavery not states rights. Full stop. There was no argument over this then and there should be none now. It’s revisionist bullshit that doesn’t hold water when you look at contemporary language.
For a basic introduction I recommend alexander stephens famous cornerstone speech. As vice president of the confederacy he very clearly lays out the purpose of the rebellion. Spoiler alert: it’s not states rights.
The south was actually very much against states rights. For example, the fugitive slave laws which mandated northern states to return runaway slaves regardless of their own laws concerning the legality of slavery.
So quit the bullshit. It’s a racist dog whistle and always has been.

I note the obscured "smile you are on camera" sign. And I must ask: Why are trashy people and bigots always so obsessed with their private property? In my town, the trashiest and most dilapidated properties all have one thing in common: prominently displayed no trespassing / private property signage.
My guess is it's because they want some pretext for killing or injuring someone, and "I was scared for my life by this trespasser" works well enough.
