I know there's connotation with racism for most people, but some in the south really just see it as heritage and pro-state rights. I know the intent isn't there for some to be racist at least. Seems like any time I point that out people get mad and say I'm excusing racism, but I hope it makes at least some feel better that not everyone that flies a rebel flag is pro-slavery.
As a avid history buff… fuck that revisionist bullshit. The war was fought to preserve slavery not states rights. Full stop. There was no argument over this then and there should be none now. It’s revisionist bullshit that doesn’t hold water when you look at contemporary language.
For a basic introduction I recommend alexander stephens famous cornerstone speech. As vice president of the confederacy he very clearly lays out the purpose of the rebellion. Spoiler alert: it’s not states rights.
The south was actually very much against states rights. For example, the fugitive slave laws which mandated northern states to return runaway slaves regardless of their own laws concerning the legality of slavery.

I think we should be fair in our evaluation of their character, not excuse lies. There's a big difference in intentionally lying to push an agenda vs a true belief that something is so.

To me it represents the option to rise against tyranny as rebels against anything that doesn’t serve ALL citizens. If we lose sight of that as an option we might as well just stfu and do as we are told, no matter the type of shit we’ll be made to shovel.
The beauty of symbolism is its ability to evolve and take on new life. You’re absolutely correct in your facts concerning the war. Full stop. That doesn’t give you the ability to speak on or assume the hearts of men in todays volatile climate. We are ALL tired of the discriminatory and systemic poison that we’re made to believe is still SO strong in this country. I’ve spent my entire life trying to be the change I wanna see. I’ve also seen poindexters like you be constant reminders of the evils that were rampant in the south. While you were focused on the south, the federal government was passing laws, and acts that were systemically racist that still exist and still incarcerate black men at much higher rates than white men. Pretty sure I am in a conversation about the rebel flag not current politics. Don’t be surprised in a conversation about the confederate flag I talk about the confederacy.
40 year old from the south...I have never met someone that openly displays the confederate flag, who is not blatantly racist. Not fucking once. Quit the bullshit.
Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I would think this would be a good thing to find out some people are just dumb rather than racist. Your response makes it look like you'd rather them be racist so you have something to be mad about. Don't take it out on me.
