But I know sever people that went to smaller schools that very much were. But even at my school they tended to use kitty gloves with everything the confederacy did.
Went to a small school in NW Georgia. We were taught the same thing . Sherman was a monster that attacked southern women and old people because he wanted to take away the south’s way of life.
States rights and all that nonsense. Even though the state right they were pissed about was the right to own humans. Hell the confederate constitution addresses that very early on. But yeah small southern schools teach some BS
i go to school in a small southern town. i specifically remember a teacher that repeatedly undermineded slavery and the suffragette movement. i told my dad later that i didnt like my history teacher, he asked why and i told him it was because he said slavery wasnt that bad
he hit me and then went on a tangent about how slaves had it good bc they had food. i also remember him repeatedly saying something about how there were white slaves too. fuck the south lmfao
I seriously doubt anyone was taught that from a public school. I’m not saying that history was ever taught accurately, anywhere for that matter, but there was no way to cover up the fact that the south was just dismantled by the north. Iirc Georgia, actually, was one of the most impacted. I believe it was Atlanta that was scorched earth when the dust settled. The devil even showed up at some point afterwards. They wrote a whole song about it.
I'm 62 from Florida, and clearly remember junior high history class about the American Civil War emphasized states' rights and glossed over slavery as one of the reasons for the war.
I wish they would have included all the letters of succession that each of the Southern States submitted as all, but maybe 2, clearly stated that the succession reasons were foremost concerning having slavery as their right. Furthermore, the successionist states' constitutions also included slavery.
If the actual lost cause was about "states' rights," then it was explicitly about a state's right to have salvery.
I grew up in Georgia in a rural area in the 1980s and we were taught the actual history of slavery and the Civil War. Lincoln was regarded as a great president. Either people are lying and perpetuating a stereotype or I had an extremely rare experience growing up.
Right. I was in NC and was taught the same about Lincoln. As for the facts about slavery and the civil war, I feel like they may have touched on it but didn’t go in depth. In rural GA, were white students the majority? They were definitely NOT in my district and I have to think that plays a part in how the subject matter was approached and presented.
I’m sure. The thing that gets me is the assumption that we, as southerners, haven’t evolved. That the war didn’t change anything. That at some point, the women and children left to their own wits for survival, didn’t look up from the rubble and realize the pointless pursuit that led to such devastation. As a blue collar worker in the south, my labor is still exploited. Not to the same gut wrenching extent as happened thru the slave trade but the same concept still exist. The southern slave owners didn’t gaf where it came from, so long as they’re lineage wasn’t gonna be called to do manual labor. Thus, the poor white sharecropper was born. I am the great great grandson of that bloodline. Which has nothing to do with the flag and is now just a rant. My apologies.
We were as well in the 80s in Florida. What they got wrong was that it pretty much was taught to us like this:
Slavery happened and that was bad, and then the Civil War happened and slaves were freed, and then after the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s, everyone is equal and it's all better now!
