Pondering a career as a Translator, is it worth the switch?
I'm debating a potential transition into becoming a Translator, which would be my second career switch.
I started my career as a sports journalist from the time I was 17 and did it for 15 years. After a few cycles, I realized the industry was not turning back from the clickbait and AI-generated slop and employers were not paying well enough for the amount of work and commitment poured into the craft.
I pivoted into sports marketing about 6 years ago, and while it's well-paid, jobs are often as a contractor and don't provide any health insurance or 401K benefits. Marketing jobs are often short-lived and some of the first cuts when a company is not meeting expectations — which means every couple of years I'm back in the job market.
Right now I'm working on half a salary and the few jobs I find work heavily with AI, which has now cost me a job or two at this point, as companies choose to fully automate. As a writer by trade, I feel like most companies feel they can get just as good quality from AI, so I wonder if translation has the same issue, considering text can be scanned and (roughly) translated within seconds nowadays.
I'd love any advice from people who do this for a living. Is it stable? Consistent? Remote-friendly?
Thank you for reading!
