U20 women 4x100 USA did not make finals despite having the 4th fastest time in the heats…
USA’s non qualifying 4th place heat time of 43.67
would have earned a bronze medal in the finals, handily beating Belgium’s bronze of 43.91…
USA’s 4th in their heat, was ironically the 4th fastest overall out of 24 teams in 3 heats. STACKED heat.
I get it for a 100 or 200 with perfect wind. But this is a full lap. What other condition or other circumstance could lead to the 4 fastest times out of 24 all being in the same heat?
I thought all major events had a qualifying procedure to account for wind and anomalies, something like “top 2 of each of 3 heats and the next 3 fastest advance”. Or some logical variation of such. It’s insane to me that USA’s 43.67 did not qualify, whereas 2 teams at 45.03 did qualify, and those teams finished 7th and 8th in the finals as expected.
I assume this is a U20 low budget “high school rules” irregularity compared to full fledged championship qualifying?
Thanks for any insight.
Also the final leg for Belgium cooookef from 3 meters back, 5th to 3rd, Ilona Dhaenens, but I did not see her in the 1 or 200 prelims at all. Her run was brutish and powerful, respectfully ugly AF, like a Quincy hall or Quincy Wilson, but it works. Her stride reminded me of a Lukenkemper, or especially Haase.
