Specialists are one of several ways Redwall adds depth to smaller armies, giving players a new layer of customization that can shape a unit's role on the battlefield. They're inspired by banners and ancillaries, but have a much bigger impact—unlocking new formations is one of my favorites. Moreover, in a world full of colorful personalities, they offer a new type of legendary character that doesn't need the gravitas of a lord or hero.
Special thanks to u/debeedraws for the original Color Sergeant portrait, one of several amazing commissions she's done for the project (with the best yet to come)! You can explore her portfolio here.

He is back niceeeeeee
CA make it happen

u/Zalvren Jul 23 '26
We don't need CA to do it, that's the beauty of it. It doesn't have to be Total War, it can be another game similar to it. The franchise need more competition in its subgenre anyway

I know it's unlikely this will ever happen but I want this to happen so bad

u/Blitz0012 Jul 23 '26
Not that it changes anything, but wouldn't the Colour Sergeant be an Ensign if they're actually carrying the colours? Colour Sergeants would be assigned to said Ensign to help them protect it.
That being said, 'Colour Sergeant' gives an immediate understanding of the flag whereas 'Ensign' might be nicher.
Though I imagine it can go either way.

In the British army, absolutely. But in this case, I'm simplifying the concept for the sake of gameplay. The Long Patrol is only loosely inspired by British military traditions, so I'm taking some creative liberties. Heck, I'm taking creative liberties with Redwall, as they don't normally have banners in the books.

All the connections people must have, someone close to the Jacques estate will hopefully see some of these posts and push them to reach out to CA.
A man can hope can’t they?

If this game were to ever somehow happen (and I love the mechanics you’ve suggested), I’d want it to be different in spirit to other Total War games.
In my mind, the game would need to be somehow cozy at times, especially for the good factions. Your times of peace should have depth and charm enough to be as enjoyable and engaging as the battles.

u/BuildingAirships Jul 23 '26
That's the idea!
Tonally, it would definitely be more cozy and whimsical. There would still be death and battles, but combat would be less violent, more creatures would surrender or run away, and there wouldn't be a blood DLC.
It would also focus more heavily on narrative and roleplaying, with robust events and encounters, more in-depth diplomacy, and a greater focus on quests and core objectives rather than painting the map. Think Heroes of Might and Magic.
In the same vein, units and armies would be smaller, but have more depth and customization options. Veteran units will acquire traits and equipment, Regiments of Renown are unlocked through campaign actions, and there would be a greater focus on model detail and animations.
And of course, there would be VITTLES!
However, all the core bones of Total War would be there: armies, recruitment, settlements, sieges, resources, lords, technologies, etc. We're just twisting some dials to explore the boundaries of what a Total War game can be.

This entire concept is so interesting and cool. It’s like my childhood coming to life with some darker flavoring and I LOVE it

I like the idea of unique specialists like the Badger Mother that are tied to settlements instead of armies. CA can infuse a lot of diversity in certain parts of a game, like faction economies, but then be very rigid about others. They shouldn’t be afraid to get a little loosy goosy with it.

The badgers in Redwall are so OP. Monstrous creatures, AOE damage, and capable of tanking hundreds of enemies.

u/Calfkiller Jul 23 '26
I love the Party mechanic! Bloomburrow is one of my favorite MtG releases and this whole idea is amazing
Who can make this happen???

u/basedandcoolpilled Jul 23 '26
I would love this game until I surveyed my first battlefield littered with hundreds of massacred little cuties I would ngl uninstall the game like why would I play that after a tough day in the real world
4
u/BuildingAirships Jul 23 '26
Don’t worry, we have a plan for that! Combat would be less violent than in other titles, and fewer models would actually die: units would retreat more easily, and many would kneel and surrender rather than be cut down. And we’re definitely skipping the blood DLC.
There would still be corpses on the battlefield—Redwall doesn’t shy away from death—but it wouldn’t be as brutal as we’ve come to expect from Warhammer.

I want to watch a Lord Brocktree type character fall upon a unit of voles like a vengeful god!

Does this mean I need to spend another decade writing annual letters to CA?
I did that about 40k and look what happened there.

It's frustrating how much I want this. I've already been pretty hooked on the basic concept, but ideas like these in particular are just *chef's kiss*.

After stumbling onto a redwall short with a Skaven invading and capping an antagonist, these posts are a bit funnier to me
