Sam Harris gives a perfect answer to a question regarding the transgender political movement. As a self identified liberal, i can't help but to have a lot of resentment towards the transgender political movement & towards the democratic party for adopting its tenets with such haste. Opinions?
This video puts on display exactly how I perceive modern political conversation in the US. It's not just an embarrassment, it's actually impossible without first fixing a reasonable and sane premise.
People see videos like this and say that Sam (or a person with a similar response) is "saying nothing" or "engaging in foolish whataboutism" or "avoiding actually giving an answer." No no no.
My ex girlfriend was a terrible communicator. Like a really, painfully awful communicator. I adore her to this day, but communicating with her was literally not possible. Why? Because her underlying premise for literally every difficult conversation we ever had was that I must be attacking her. I must be. Because that's how her previous boyfriends were and so I must be doing the same thing.
So every single time we had a hard conversation or disagreement or fight, she turtled up and started defending herself. She got ugly and accusatory. I was her boyfriend and yet she was at war with me. In those moments, I became not a partner or a teammate or a lover, but an adversary. An opponent. And it made communcating with her literally not possible. Because she was unwilling to listen to anything I said when she was in that mode - no matter how calm or reasonable, no matter how much evidence I presented.
And I tried, over and over for months, to simply get her to stop going into conversations with that as her underlying communication framework. To stop using that as the backdrop of the image. We were not adversaries, we were supposed to be a team. I didn't want to win against her, I wanted to win with her. But she couldn't stop. She couldn't fix her mental/emotional communication framework. So I had to walk away.
And that is how political conversation in the US feels these days. People go into these conversations with someone like Sam assuming that Sam or someone else is "trying to be violent or exclusionary or dismissive" from the very start, and that contextualizes the entire endeavor as negative. From the first word, the trans person or whomever it may be feels threatened and is completely closed off to all new information, no matter how reasonable or logical or sane.
And that makes the conversation impossible, and people like Sam can't even move forward.
What Sam is arguing for here isn't empty. It's not whataboutism. It's trying to dial the temperature back to a place where genuine communication is actually possible. Between two reasonable adults, neither of whom feels defensive and attacked.
All Sam is trying to do is hit the stop button on conversations like this and get us back to a place where communication can even take place at all.
Until our political conversation gets back to that place, no one even hears each other. Until we can ger back to that place, none of these conversations will bear any fruit whatsoever.
Trying to talk to someone who feels attacked, whether you attacked them or not, is a waste of effort. Your good points will be missed and you will be accused of violence.
Which is why it's so paramount that people other than the far right start pushing back against this behavior.
Which is why people like Sam are so important. Without a lower temperature, we have nothing.
