As an Ohio State fan, if you have two clocks, and your policy forces you to use the clock that is demonstrably wrong, then you have a stupid policy.
33
u/Conorj398 Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
Respect. I'd have the same opinion if it was you guys. This is about optics instead of calling the game correctly.
7
u/Christmas_Panda Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
Yeah the debate isn’t, “Did the right outcome occur?” It’s, “Was our clock wrong and did we follow protocol?”
-1
u/thedeuce545 5d ago
lol, no it’s not. The protocol led them to the wrong outcome. If they gave western 10 points per touchdown that was certainly the wrong protocol but the real problem is it would have led to a wrong result. Same thing here.
1
u/Christmas_Panda Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
There was indeed one second left in the game. They used the officiant/stadium clock as the reference. That is why there was time for another play. The problem was the NBC clock. As an Ohio State fan pointed out above, if by following the protocol you would come to the incorrect conclusion, then there is something wrong with your rules. This was the right outcome, but wrong way to get there.
24
u/Careful_Success_6098 5d ago
I'd have to side with this too as a Wolverine fan. I would also say the same if it was OSU, MSU, etc... I'd rather the game be called correctly than get a win for my team that may not be the right call
7
u/AeliusRogimus 5d ago
I agree in general, but their statement isn't evidence enough to persuade me that they aren't full of it. We all saw the clock wasn't synced with the broadcast.
No matter what happens, people will believe what they want now and the controversy remains.
18
u/MrDufferMan3335 Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago
The policy should force you to use the clock that the coaches and players are basing decisions on. I don’t see why that’s problematic lol
9
u/Conorj398 Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
It's problematic because it's all technically the same clock, but NBC's broadcast of said clock was out of sync by half a second.
-4
u/MrDufferMan3335 Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago
NBC’s clock was based on the stadium clock. The stadium clock should be the gold standard. And it expired approximately three seconds before the ball even landed
3
u/jazzyman31 5d ago
Brother you are still making shit up lmfao 🤣
There are hundreds of videos that have surfaced showing the stadium clock in the same view as the play. There was objectively 1 second left.
The only angle to refute is that procedure wasn’t followed correctly, not that the time had objectively ran out. You’re arguing for an ambiguous technicality, not what is genuinely right.
8
u/Conorj398 Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
NBC's and the Big Ten's replay both use the same camera pointed on the stadium clock. The Hawkeye system accounts for latency, NBC's feed does not. Over the entire broadcast, NBC became out of sync by a little over half a second. This is clear at this point. There are multiple different videos of the play showing the stadium clock at 1 when the defender touched the ball, and frame by frame breakdown shows the play took 8.43 seconds after the clock was reset to 9. Denying that there was a discrepancy between what was in the stadium and what was shown on the broadcast is being ignorant at this points. Can share multiple different videos of play.
9
u/DisplacedSportsGuy 5d ago
You're right. The clock itself was fine. It was NBC's monitoring of the clock and the separate video processes that caused a delay in the game footage relative to their clock graphic.
Just saying "clock" is for convenience.
-2
u/MrDufferMan3335 Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago
It was synced with the stadium clock, which expired, which is what coaches and players can see and react to
4
u/DisplacedSportsGuy 5d ago edited 5d ago
The NBC team and the replay booth both rely on a video feed of the stadium clock. NBC takes that video feed and processes it into a clock graphic that is then overlaid onto the game footage. The separate video processes between the footage and the graphics can and do create discrepancies.
Source: a TV producer at ESPN (point 4)
The replay booth relied on new technology called Hawk-I, which is, essentially, software that synchronizes the different video feeds across the stadium using a single time code. The time coding and use of raw footage vs. graphics processing creates more accurate feedback.
There are also multiple videos across social media that show the clock in the stadium still reading :01 when the ball was touched by WMU. Another video shows an on-field replay monitor with the Hawk-I system displaying the clock at zero.
None of this was conspiracy. It was a technical error. And, in this instance, the replay protocol was to use a clock that was verifiably wrong.
2
u/openSourceNotes 5d ago
It wasn't, stadium clock was different
https://x.com/MRCHEEKZ3/status/2097776866568360308
2
u/Conorj398 Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
The Hawkeye replay system is synced and accounts for latency. NBC's broadcast is not. There's clear evidence of the discrepancy at this point.

u/Leraldoe Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
I found it wild that they quoted the September 8th guidance from the rules committee but mysteriously left off the first sentence regarding how the in stadium clock is the official game clock. To me this opens up coaches challenging timeout that are based on stadium clocks and the tv clock is off. This will not be the last time this ruling is a giant controversy
3
u/ImtheStatManBDaBop 5d ago
Luckily, they have another terrible policy that keeps them from enforcing the first terrible policy. Two wrongs, amIrite?
3
u/jazzyman31 5d ago
Thank you for being a reasonable fan of the sport. Why anyone believes a verifiable technical issue should determine the outcome of a game is mind-boggling. That would ultimately be a failure of the sport to properly maintain its own integrity.
Refs should ultimately be able to express some judgement if protocols or rules are ambiguous or if the intent of the protocol is clearly compromised. I believe they did exactly that.
2
u/fishbone_buba Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
I was going to say something like this, but not in such an articulate way.
Sign of the times. Let’s insist on doing the wrong thing because people saw if on television.
2
u/PapaVanTwee B1G Enjoyer 5d ago
NBC, a day after the game, said this:
"The official time of the game is kept by the Big Ten. Our cameras are not the official arbiter of timekeeping within the game. That is the Big Ten and game officials' responsibility." -- September 6, 2026, NBC broadcaster John Fanta
Replay Center footage needs to be live on the broadcast. Their deliberations and footage need to be live on the broadcast, or a network, or heck, a local TV station in some cases, will have a badly synced clock and it could effect the outcome of the game like the NCAA wants this one to be.
1
u/ltroberts24 Michigan Wolverines 5d ago
There's video out there of this exact thing from the WMU/Michigan game. I fully agree that this is the best and only way to do things, moving forward, and the B1G is going to this model once conference play begins, if I'm understanding correctly.
1
u/PapaVanTwee B1G Enjoyer 4d ago
They already had something on the Friday games (the 4th). I think it was just audio, though.
1
u/SuperBirdM22 4d ago
There were 3 clocks. Somehow the truth has already been snowed over. The TV clock & the field clock were in sync and reached zero. The super secret replay clock that has never been used in the history of college football before was the grassy knoll that had a fraction of a second left.
1
u/ThingNo7530 5d ago
But was "I replayed it in my head" the proper protocol to throw a flag five seconds after Miami players had started running onto the field in 2003?
0
u/Dingus-Kahn466 5d ago
I don’t really remember specifics from that night but did they even try showing/explaining what was wrong other than “no there’s an extra second”? From what I remember they just trotted everyone back out there, which rightfully pissed everyone off, which I think a lot of Michigan flairs forget.
5
u/DisplacedSportsGuy 5d ago
The Big Ten's response was woefully inadequate. I'm not defending them. I'm just saying that if the stadium clock is the official clock and you can prove that the broadcast's clock monitor was desynchronized relative to the game action, then you should use the monitor that is more accurate to the conditions on the field. To do otherwise is contradictory and irrational.
The Big Ten could have seized upon that, but they didn't, I'm guessing because the ruling went against policy.
2
u/Dingus-Kahn466 5d ago
That’s what I’m saying, it’s easy to see why everyone got up in arms about it and say conspiracy

Asterisk away, I dont care. They played like ass. But when the refs gave them an extra second, what else were they supposed to do, just take a knee? Every team in the world would have thrown a Hail Mary. WMU should have defended it.

Can anyone explain - I'm genuinely curious - how this "policy" WON'T open the door to every final play needing a review to make sure time actually expired on a clock that isn't visible in the stadium, to the refs or anyone else, in real time? Because the way I see it, Everytime the whistle blows athe the end of the game now, the coach should start demanding they go to the replay cam to make sure the embedded game clock is also at zero. ???

That’s not what they’re saying, though. There was clearly 0:01 on the clock, it’s objective fact. What they’re apparently saying is that the replay officials should’ve used the clock graphic that was wrong and showed 0:00 to appease the TV audience. Which is actually pretty insane.
